How did you change the background sky and the pattern of the girl's outfit?

I guess you mean that its darker than the original patern ? I used a adjusment layer of photoshop to get the dark parts real dark. ( sry I got the german version so I cant tell you the 100% exact names) but it should look like this

Actually i thought those parts were a little "overdone", bla, but the rest looks really nice

Yup , you could have pulled the patern in fnuk's chalange make a new layer and delete the sky and outfit and let the patern in
