This is a cool poem that I found when trying to teach my students the differences in pronunciation between Y and E (y in year, and e in ear).
The site that I found it is here: http://linguistlist.org/issues/13/13-3353.html

About the part that is underlined and bold. Does this have another pronunciation? Or was it a typo, when it was supposed to be "Though"...?

Anyways- Enjoy the Poem~ it's quite cool :D.

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough.
Others may stumble but not you,
On hiccough, through, lough and through.
Well done! And now you wish, perhaps,
To learn of less familiar traps.

Beware of heard, a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird,
And dead--it's said like bed, not bead.
For goodness's sake, don't call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat:
They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.

A moth is not a moth in mother,
Nor both in bother, broth in brother,
And here is not a match for there,
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear,
And then there's dose and rose and lose--
Just look them up--and goose and choose,
And cork and work and card and ward,
And font and front and word and sword,
And do and go and thwart and cart.
Come, come, I've hardly made a start.

A dreadful language? Man alive,
I'd mastered it when I was five.

Think that should answer your question... "through" and "you" rhyme, so they're all in the right place.

But yeah, that's a really famous poem... at least in linguistic circles. I remember reading it first in an introductory text to linguistics. Still quite amusing though.

ah thanks~ I knew one of them had to be wrong, just wasn't sure which one. That works. Thanks a bunch :ossu

This was the first time I read this and so I found it quite interesting~ I guess I need to study up on linguistics a bit more...

Wow, that site is great. Especially the first poem is too damn long (the author must have been bored). I found this amusing
A. Spelling 'Jokes' etc

If GH stands for P as in Hiccough
If OUGH stands for O as in Dough
If PHTH stands for T as in Phthisis
If EIGH stands for A as in Neighbour
If TTE stands for T as in Gazette
If EAU stands for O as in Plateau
The right way to spell POTATO should be GHOUGHPHTHEIGHTTEEAU!
Not really THAT funny, but somewhat true.

Im not english but the poem was easy. It is brilliantly written. I love the last bit where the poets idea of english changes, very similiar to sonnets. I fancy myself as a wannabe poet :P

Loved it! Brilliantly written and fun too with the word games.

We're assigned to do something similar in my last English course.. we're going to have a famous poem as a template and then we're going to construct our own funky poem... I so wish I will be able to use that one... so much creativity!
