Your blog brings some interest point. But as long as manga being sold as a commercial product, it is impossible to completely separate art from economic interests. Isn't the entire point of manga taisho to drum up attention to new manga (with its requirement of less than 8 volumes)?
Tbf, Kaiju nomination is entirely bullshit. The manga is okay, but not that spectacular in both art and plot departments.
I am fine with the rest of nominees. I haven't read 3 of them: both Wayama works and Chi - Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite. But I love Wayama's Muchuu sa, Kimini, and Chi seems to be an interesting historcial manga.
Also, last year winner, Blue period, totally deserve its victory last year. It's the best ongoing manga imo.
I hope Mizu wa Umi ni Mukatte Nagareru win this year.

I think its fine, there is no need to separate art from economic interests.Thats why i brought up the Japan Media Arts Festival manga award an award that since it uses submission process it gives series with lower visibility a chance. I think in another post i will try to classify awards by looking at their selection process and the likes.

Thought it was better to reply to this here since it's not WSJ related, but I guess there were eight on the committee for nominations, and then three from those (including this Chūjō) decided the winners?
He was the only one who voted for Land at the nomination stage, and then he swayed the other two (or six) to go with Land for the grand prize? I don't know... seems like a pretty flawed system.

Naoki Urasawa Launches Drawing-Themed YouTube Channel With English Subtitles
Manga creator Naoki Urasawa (Yawara!, Master Keaton, 20th Century Boys, Pluto) launched a YouTube channel in April focusing on drawing. In his debut video he said that he started the channel to let inform people about his current work, his life as a manga artist, and to share drawing tips. The videos are posted with English closed caption subtitles.
His most recent video, posted on Tuesday, shows how to draw lines with a ruler, which he describes as a "basic" manga technique. The video includes a tutorial on how to draw the motion lines commonly seen in manga, as well as general advice on how to improve as an artist.
