I have posted something on this vein before. So, here I'm going to add a bit more to that.

What Grisha was doing during his stint within the walls is still a mystery. But there are a few clues which can help us deduce something roughly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) First question is whether Grisha obtained his shifting powers before or after entering Shiganshina. Most likely it was before, as he was found alone with some sort of memory loss. Also, it's difficult to survive in human form outside.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Grisha also seems to have forgotten the value of money :

That is wierd, even if he was from outside the walls, why wouldn't he know about currency or money?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) After entering Shiganshina, he took up the role of a doctor, which tells us that he has had some sort of medical education and training before. So somewhere outside, settlements with hospitals/clinics/research labs existed. This settlement where Grisha originated from could even be the warriors land. If it is indeed part of the warriors land, he could have even be part of a team which works on developing serums/titan experimentation or something

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) A plague hit people in Shiganshina around 11-12 yrs prior to RBA's infiltration. Infact, you could say the plague was there 1-2 yrs prior to Eren/RBA were born.

Let's for a moment assume that this plague is associated to the titan thing in some way. In fact, I'm thinking these are the symptoms, before transformation to a normal Titan. Grisha, with his previous knowledge, being a shifter etc. could easily come up with a cure.

In a similar fashion, the Beast Titan camped out at castle Utgard (it's been hinted that there was somebody living there just a short while before the Titans were spotted), brought about this plague to the Raigako people, waited till all of them were infected/decapitated, and then transformed them. MT has some-sort of coordinate like ability which helps him transform them all immediately after priming them.

The next question that comes up is : how and why did Shiganshina people get the plague? So somebody actually tried to attack humanity before the young warriors were born. And, it's a convenient place to start your attack from, being in the south. Seems like that plan actually failed, and somebody actually eliminated the shifter who came and attacked - probably Grisha did that. This attack could have been from a shifter of the warrior faction. If the news of the failure did reach back, it probably surprised the warrior faction and they sent in 4 'warrior' shifters 12-13 years later, in year 845. I'm thinking these shifters (RBA) were specifically raised for that objective, hence the brainwashing, and their current turbulent emotional state after staying with the 104th for 3 years.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5) Another clue to what Grisha's been doing is that he was close friends to the Ackerman family and was their family doctor. I'm thinking after the plague incident, he must have realised there was something special about these Ackerman and Asian bloodline wrt to the Titan ability, so he quickly became friendly with them. He visited Mikasa's family from time to time to check on them, just to see if he can figure something out.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6) Also, the frequent trips he took to the inside of the walls - were to further his investigation on the issue. I'm thinking he kept visiting the Reiss chapel to see when they'd come next. He might have even deduced that they held the coordinate from the chapel cave's material and planned to steal it from them. On the day of Wall Maria breach, he got info that the Reiss were gonna visit at last to pray that night. And he finally did his act.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So basically, in his basement he must have logged all of this knowledge - about the plague, titan serums, abilities and also about the Ackermans.

Who did Grisha eat?
Who was the first shifter?
If you only have to ingest spinal fluid, why can't there be multiple coordinates?

It is canon that sporadically, there were titans spawning inside the walls, causing great destruction and heavy losses, only a titan a time.

Once the menace was dealt with, all people seemed to forget everything.

There could be some relation to the plague... Or maybe those ocurrences were part of the warrior initiative.

If the world was to be fully and completely ruled by titans, there would be no reason for Armin's parents be killed when they tried to leave with a balloon.

Your theory is very interesting, I believe that, there might be a way to turn people back to human form even without eating another shifting. That was probably the major efforts on Griesha's researches.

But probably he discovered the coordinate. Maybe he even knew about it. He tried and tried doing things with what he have, but he could never obtain the right result because or his serums or whatever, weren't being enough efficient.

Or the only way to complete his research was obtaining the Coordinate, or the Coordinate was the only way.

He probably knew like Ymir did, that titans are not like that because they want it, because they're naturally evil, they are only sleeping.

On top of that the Reiss family weren't doing single thing about the situation, so he decided that he would help better by taking the Coordinate to his own purposes.

If he was to say to Eren that he would be the one to avenger everybody, then he probably knew beforehand who was behind the attacks and probably because Eren is related somehow to the First King and not the Reiss family as some would suggest.

Well, either warriors simply don't have money, they have a different sort of society or grisha was simply unfamiliar with wall currency rather than with currency altogether. Maybe they use barter in warrior civilization lol.

I don't think the plague was necessarily associated with titans. People within the walls have been living surrounded by thousands upon thousands of titans for 100 years. The plague should have hit 100 years earlier if it was titans. Alternate theory, grisha brought the plague, unintentionally. Warriors spent 100 years separated from wall humans. Maybe over that time they developed their own pathogens and whatnot. Grisha was used to it so he didn't suffer but when he got to the wall he passed it on to people without immunity. In turn as grisha was a doctor and it is something that should have been long dealt with by people beyond the walls he was able to cure it.

Yep I agree that it could be just that Grisha wasn't acquainted with the currency specifically within the walls.

We don't know what exactly triggered the production of Titans a hundred years ago. And as it so happens, the first king wiped memories of most humans within the walls. So a massive plague could have been caused a 100 years ago, and the perpetrator, using some sort of trigger or power, could have transformed them. But anyway that's just a theory...
