It's a bit of a theory mix into it as well....
Itachi will meet up with Sasuke in the Uchiha's temple. There he will tells Sasuke that it wasnt him who killed the clan; it was Tobi. Itachi recounted the night of the massacre; he tried to stop Tobi but he could not, for Tobi's MS was superior to his. Tobi defeated Itachi but in the end, Itachi begged Tobi to spare his brother, in return, he will be his faithful servant and a member of AK. Then Itachi had that encounter with Sasuke, using genjutsu, he tricked his brother that he had killed the clan, and wants Sasuke to get stronger, to surpass him and ultimately beat Tobi to avenge his clan.
Once the truth comes out, Sasuke finally understood why his brother wanted him to get stronger and attain MS. At this point Tobi appears and reveals his true intention, gaining Madara Uchiha power etc.; Itachi and Sasuke fight with Tobi. As strong as they are, Tobi is just too much, Sasuke gets injured, and barely has any chakra left.
At this point, Itachi tells him to get out. Using his last remaining chakra, Itachi uses Black Flame Jutsu to hold off Tobi while Sasuke uses the space time jutsu to escape. During the exact moment of his escape, Sasuke saw his brother died at the hand of Tobi while looking at him with a smile. After the escape, Sasuke moved and angered by the death of his brother, he finally attains the legendary MS and vows to defeat Tobi. =O
