To be honest, this was a lucky shot. Went out for a walk, saw this flower and went for it. Took this picture with my phone.

It was kind of high so taking a picture was a pain.

MangaHelpers Art Contest: Macro Photography - "Flower of the past" by Totinona

I took this picture maybe 11 years ago..? I wanted to try and take a new picture but I didn't do it when the weather was nice and now it is cold and raining so I'll go with this one. :nod

MangaHelpers Art Contest: Macro Photography - "Farfalla" by Purity of Magi

Okay this is kinda funny, but to be completely fair I wasn't even planning to participate in this contest lol. However, today I literally was just randomly checking in my album and I found this image, which was taken approx. 5/6 years ago. This random Farfalla managed somehow to find its way to get inside the house, and I managed to make a photo of its pretty colors. Probably the closest photo I have taken from Farfalla so far. So there you go a submission when Farfalla was still pretty, young looking and less moody. '3'/

Of course, she has probably become a bit.... older as we might have seen..... and lost her pretty colors....... poor Farfalla -3-

Macro Photography: "Fine Craftsmanship" by Trien

Thought I'd go for something a bit different, given that macro photography often lends itself to pictures of flora and fauna. I have a picture of a raindrop on a leaf (not too dissimilar from the example photo at the top of the thread) which I thought about submitting... but it's been printed out in large size and hanging on the wall at my office for many years now, so it didn't feel quite right.

Hence, for a bit of different scenery, something mechanical instead. This is a shot of the balance wheel assembly from a mechanical wristwatch. Basically a weight that oscillates back and forth on the coiled spring, it serves the same purpose (on a much smaller scale) as the pendulum in a large clock, acting as the timekeeper to ensure that the wound-up main power spring (not visible in picture) releases its energy at a controlled rate, so the watch ticks at the right speed.

While much of the parts can be and are manufactured by machinery these days, something of this size still has to be assembled by hand. And a skilled watchmaker can properly lubricate, position, and adjust the balance of all the parts, so that it runs no more than in the range of 5 seconds difference from actual time per day, regardless of the orientation of the watch. Now 5 seconds might sound like a major inaccuracy these days, but keep in mind this is nothing but springs and gears, with no electronics, and the majority of the parts are smaller than your pinky nail--and it's achieving only a 58 parts per million inaccuracy. I think that's pretty impressive craftsmanship.

Camera: Good ol' Lumix DMC-LF1, still mostly working so far!
Not a super expensive watch (though not a super cheap one either), so the internal finishing isn't as fancy as the really nice ones. For something like that, have a look at say the A. Lange & Söhne Datograph (going price, 5-figures and up... :o)

Macro Photography - "Teratai" by Kiki

Lotus in Bahasa Indonesia is Teratai. I really love lotus. It's rare to see them here so when I found this at my university, I felt happy and turned on my photographer mode lol.
