ERIE, Pa. - An Erie cancer researcher has found a way to burn salt water, a novel invention that is being touted by one chemist as the "most remarkable" water science discovery in a century.

John Kanzius happened upon the discovery accidentally when he tried to desalinate seawater with a radio-frequency generator he developed to treat cancer. He discovered that as long as the salt water was exposed to the radio frequencies, it would burn.

The discovery has scientists excited by the prospect of using salt water, the most abundant resource on earth, as a fuel.

Rustum Roy, a Penn State University chemist, has held demonstrations at his State College lab to confirm his own observations.

The radio frequencies act to weaken the bonds between the elements that make up salt water, releasing the hydrogen, Roy said. Once ignited, the hydrogen will burn as long as it is exposed to the frequencies, he said.

The discovery is "the most remarkable in water science in 100 years," Roy said.

"This is the most abundant element in the world. It is everywhere," Roy said. "Seeing it burn gives me the chills."

Roy will meet this week with officials from the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense to try to obtain research funding.

The scientists want to find out whether the energy output from the burning hydrogen — which reached a heat of more than 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit — would be enough to power a car or other heavy machinery.

"We will get our ideas together and check this out and see where it leads," Roy said. "The potential is huge."
hey, this is great and all, but has anyone noticed lately that everything is turning into a new alternative fuel source? and how will using this affect the balance of salt water and fresh water in our oceans? a balance already disturbed by the melting ice caps? I'm all for newer, cleaner fuels, but should we use our sea water now?

discus :p

Well we do need to find new sources of fuel no matter what happens casue i think i saw a study somewhere that said we only got a few more decades left of oil...So we need to find as many different fuel sources as possible or else most of society will be at a standstill.

We got plenty of sea water to use until we can find another fuel source.

60 years at the most, 40 at the least. by then the price per gallon will be something like $300

if we have to use sea water, we should start with seas and the great salt lake. i dont see why we should kick the ocean when it is already going down

Still, they're burning the sea water, so wouldn't that be like gasoline, except there's more of it? I'd prefer solar-powered or hydrogen powered cars, because that way there's no pollution. Although, if there is no pollution, please correct me.

But still it would solar isnt as strong for it to take over oil. Hydrogen is more powerful but kind of expensive.

Sea water is a thing to give us time until we can make solar power stronger or hyrogen power cheaper.

Is the output power that can be extracted form the burning hydrogen greater than the power required to generate the microwaves used to excite the water?

Yes. Hydrogen can power cars fater than oil can. I've only seen it been tested on Formula 1 cars. So if it can do that then i guess the answer is yes, it can generate anything oil does and probably better.

Its just too dang expensive.

I don't care about price and stuff, I was just wondering about how sea water fuel would pollute when it's burnt.

Well, 2 H2 + O2 = 2 H2O, so you'll have a lot of that nasty di-hydrogen oxide coming out the exhaust.

A bigger problem may be corrosion and salt deposits in the tank/pipes/engine.

Wait what...I just think youll have 2 molecules of water according to your formula. So how can water be a bad thing as exhaust.

I dont believe in Global Warming, It's just something the dang tree-huggers made up. Global warming is the warming of the Earth by a natural accurace after an ice age.

must.... resist... flaming against global warming non-believer....

Anyway, the problem with using hydrogen as fuel is that it takes as much energy to break down water into H2 as it can produce, which is why its expensive.

But... sea water as a fuel? how does that work? I mean... the chemical reaction... what's the output other than energy?

well i said people are getting frantic and all.. and i will not be surprise if this not gonna work out..

as for global warming.. it is real and pretty normal... it happen a lot of time during the history of the earth .. the earth itself will not come to harm since it will recover in time (really long long time) but the human that will be in trouble since they will not going to be able to cope with it quick enough once everything start to take effect ...

Hmm.. interesting read, but the main concern would be the how much seawater is needed to break the chain of it to produce enough hydrogen to burn? Let say to move a car for 100 miles, how much water do we need?

Well, for the hydrogen we could just use any kind of water to break the hydrogen. Perhaps the reason why they need to use seawater because they need an agent(s). Sulfur, magnesium and potassium do exist in seawater composition.

But yeah, let face it. The most efficient energy on earth in nuclear. But I doubt we would ever use it, not if judging from what we have so far.

Cost shouldn't be an issue really. I mean, if you look at like that were technically screwing over future generations because the government is a bunch of cheap tight wads. I agree with what Bax is saying, its really an issue of how much seawater will produce how much fuel. May be worth it, may not. The big issue I suppose is when everyone rushes to use it as a fuel source it suddenly dries up pretty quickly.

Cost is always an issue. And it's not just monetary cost... how much energy do you put in versus how how energy do you get out?

I'm with electric cars. No polution, no refilling your tank, and we have the technology to make it RIGHT NOW. I also support nuclear power (which produces less radioactivity than coal power plants and is much safer) so that electric bills go down and even less polution.

Electric cars don't go as far on a charge as a gas-burner goes on a tank of gas, and it takes hours to recharge them. They are only suitable for short trips, and the electricity to charge them still has to be produced somewhere.
