Here are a few of my translations of the Official Fanbook (Hiden: Hyou no Sho). This is a kind of databook that came out between the first and second databook, but has often been ignored. However, there's a lot of interesting stuff in it. (Although a lot of its contents is indeed nothing special...)

The Five Great Shinobi Countries (忍び五大国, Shinobi Godaikoku)
On the continent where Konoha lies are countries of various sizes. Basically, each country that has sufficient military strength, depending on the country's economic strength, has a shinobi village, but the shinobi villages of the five countries known as "Lightning," "Water," "Earth," "Wind," and "Fire" are particularly powerful. These countries are called "The Five Great Shinobi Countries"
Lightning Country (雷の国, Kaminari no Kuni)
From the mountain ranges that stand towering over the surrounds come the echoes of roaring thunder that are said to give this country its name. Dividing the peninsula, flowing from the mountains in the centre of the country are rivers that form the very crooked coastline, displaying a impressive oceanic beauty. Also, within the country are many hot springs.
Water Country (水の国, Mizu no Kuni)
Floating in the open ocean, it's an island nation with an individual culture. While surrounded in every direction by the sea, the country's topography is characterised by the many mountains. Around the main island are islands, both large and small, each with their own customs still firmly rooted. Furthermore, islanders that still live according to these customs are numerous.
Earth Country (土の国, Tsuchi no Kuni)
This country is mostly comprised of desolate, rocky areas. The Earth Country's border runs along a rocky mountain range, blocking communication with foreign countries. Also, the wind blowing from the north passes over the mountains, carrying small rocks from the Earth Country to foreign countries. This famous natural phenomena is called "Rock Rain" (岩雨, Gan'u)
Fire Country (火の国, Hi no Kuni)
This major power has lenient hills spread across the whole realm and abundant fertile regions, supporting a large population. Located roughly in the centre of the Great Five Countries, it has been a key point in the communication and exchange of culture between each country since time immemorial. This liveliness supports the economy and prosperity of the Fire Country.
Wind Country (風の国, Kaze no Kuni)
The Wind Country covers a huge realm, but that realm is largely comprised of deserts. Throughout the year there is very little rainfall. The people live in villages build in the oases the desert is dotted with. The environment is extremely harsh, but nevertheless the population is great. There is also a lot of trading done with the Fire Country.

They are proud of their superior military force, as compared to the other villages. No-one but the leaders of the five hidden villages, who are endowed with great power are permitted to be crowned with the name "Kage". The title of "Kage" is usually inherited by being nominated by the previous generation, however there are also villages that use a parliamentary system with the village's potentates. The "Five Kage" are the ninja that stand at the top of the tens of thousands of shinobi in the whole world. Saying that these five people maintain the peace is not an exaggeration.

Great wars in the shinobi world, involving the majority of hidden villages, scattered around the various countries, using all their power. These are the "Great Shinobi World Wars." These long wars amounted to many heroes and great men being born and many strong techniques being developed. However, on the other hand, because of the many victims and the extreme war of attrition, the power of the countries was exhausted. These days, wars are determined by the power trends of the "villages," the various places are dotted with.

Originally, shinobi clans were separated from towns and started making settlements in mountain recesses and such. Ordinary people came to the shinobi villages because, even during war, life was stable there thanks to the military strength of the villages. Gradually the villages developed into the hidden villages of today.
The relation between country and village
When the daimyo-ruled country faces an attack or aggression from a foreign nation, the village inside the country's territory will protect it. In exchange the country supports the village by giving money, goods, etc. On the other hand, although it carries out an independent administration under its head, the village bears the duties which comes from being the military force of the country it is attached to.
That way, the power of the villages influence the relationships and standings between each country. For that reason, the country needs the village. The village, on the other hand, has no choice but to rely on the country for guaranteeing a stable place to live. The relationship between both parties thus guarantees equality.

The strongest village possessing an elite shinobi army corps!!
Konohagakure no Sato is proud of its great prosperity caused by its strong unity and many excellent shinobi, under the guidance of its village head, the Hokage. However, in foreign countries, the patriotism is much more unseen. While living in the severe world of the shinobi, Konohagakure's ninja pledge their loyalty to the village, in addition all the people of the village dearly protect each other as if they were members of the same family. In this village, even powerful people who, in other countries, are seen as heretics and tend to be prosecuted, aren't discriminated against and such. The climate created by these reasons is why the village prospers so much.

Kirigakure no Sato (霧隠れの里, Village Hidden by Mist)
A mysterious hidden village that's always covered by a heavy fog~~
As the head of Kirigakure no Sato, the Mizukage controls his subordinates in the shinobi army corps using strict laws. In recent years, a small part of the shinobi planned an uprising, which ended in failure.

Iwagakure no Sato (岩隠れの里, Village Hidden by Rocks)
Surrounded by natural defences, they are proud of their strong defence.
A hidden village that profits from the advantageous position offered by the natural stronghold created by the ranges of rocky mountains. As soon as the Tsuchikage gives the order, the shinobi of the village rally without hesitating, even to the point of death.
Sunagakure no Sato (砂隠れの里, Village Hidden by Sand)
The cruel environment and dancing clouds of sand become the sustenance on which these shinobi are raised
During the Great Shinobi World War, a blood-stained death struggle with the village of Konohagakure unfolded. Nowadays, after the disarmament, effort seems to be put into training small numbers of powerful, elite shinobi.

A rising power which keeps its evil ambitions to itself!!
In recent years, this hidden village was developed by the Konohagakure missing-nin Orochimaru. Even with a small number of people, there are great shinobi assembled. Now, its war potential is not to be taken lightly

Organisation
A solid organisational foundation, bringing together a powerful shinobi army corps
Konoha's shinobi organisation is controlled by the Hokage at its top. Several units are organised underneath. The Hokage and Go-Ikenban tie all shinobi together by directing the various units, consisting of jounin, tokubetsu jounin and the like, and receiving their reports. After taking into account one's aptitude, assignment to a unit is decided by decree of the upper echelons.

Hokage & Go-Ikenban
The Hokage stands at the top of the whole organisation, commanding everything while receiving the Go-Ikenban's advice. In addition to this, secret covert organisations and units exist as well.
Regular forces
Most shinobi belong to these forces, including Naruto and Kakashi. The various missions accomplished by them, assigned to both individuals and teams, form the basis for supporting the village.
Medical teams
Staying mainly behind the scenes, they are the war potential's back-up. Branching off into several units, such as one in charge of first-aid and one in charge of technical research, the medical care of the village is divided under firm conditions.
ANBU
A shadow unit, directly under the Hokage's command. They perform special high-level missions like torture and assassination. By forming the units as occasion calls, depending on the objectives and degree of difficulty, the missions are successfully accomplished.
The shinobi organisations seen in the other villages
The organisational system of the shinobi army corps is different for each village. Outside of Konoha, there are a countless amount of various official positions and units to be seen. These exist because they are needed for each different geography/topography, culture, costums, etc.
Hunter-nin corps (追い忍部隊, Oinin Butai)
↓A special unit of Kirigakure's ANBU. Also called the "Corps Processing Team" (死体処理班, Shitai Shori Han), they completely erase the person they're searching for by means of their superior assassination techniques and medical skills.

Head Shinobi (忍頭, Shinobigashira)

↑He acts as the corps commander of Kumogakure's shinobi. Ranking above jounin, he possesses the necessary authority and merit to be able to represent the village.

The summit of Konoha that governs the village!!
The one who rules the shinobi superpower Konoha and controls its shinobi army corps, that is the Hokage. Their godlike wisdom and courage are not only the greatest of Konoha, but of all shinobi throughout the world. The village rises and fall together with the Hokage. The road these four generations of Hokage have walked is the history of the village itself.

↑To be at the top of Konoha means to be at the top of everything. There's no-one with equal wisdom!!
The inherited will and feelings~~~
The will protected by, and passed on through the successive generations of Hokage isn't some secret jutsu or art. "to be like a pillar, protecting and supporting the people who love the village and believe in themselves." ~~~When they inherited that proud, burning faith, they have truly become Konoha's "Hokage."
The Hokage lineage
The First (初代, Shodai)
Going back about 60 years, leading countless shinobi with the same will, he is the originator that laid the cornerstone of Konoha.
The Second (二代目, Nidaime)
The younger brother of the First. After the death of his older brother, there was still instability. He established the foundations of the organisational structure and helped the village to develop.
The Third (三代目, Sandaime)
The prodigy that was raised by the First and Second. Having the longest reign, he helped the village to constantly progress.
The Fourth (四代目, Yondaime)
The student of the Third's student. He succeeded the Hokage name when he was young, but fell during the Kyuubi incident after a short-lived reign.
Go-Ikenban (御意見番, "Honourable Opinion Guards")
The advisors that aid the in leading the village!!
The Go-Ikenban are two elders who lived through wars as the team-mates of the Third Hokage. Because of their abundant experience and skilled ingenuity, they guide the village alongside the Hokage.

ANBU (暗部, "Dark Side")
The special forces under direct control of the Hokage!!

←They defeat the enemy ninja blocking their path in an instant!! For sure, the flash-like homicide techniques show the ANBU's true worth.
The official name is the "Special Assassination Tactics Squad" (暗殺戦術特殊部隊, Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai). The ANBU engages on dangerous and difficult missions, including assassination and spying, among other activities. These actions are concealed within darkness, like their true faces. The members are chosen by the Hokage regardless of age or gender. They also receive their mission orders directly from him.
Medical Teams (医療班, Iryou-han)
With definite skill, they support the war potential!!
The Medical Teams cooperate with the civilian medical institutions. They support and relief the war potential with their definite skill and techniques. They also develop new techniques, medicine and more, and conduct research into illnesses, the human body, etc. Even to jounin, the medical techniques seem like supernatural, or divine skills.
↓A diagnosis is derived from as little information as facial expression, behaviour, and the like. First aid is also applied with sure accuracy and swiftness.

The main force of the Konoha Shinobi Army Corps!!
The so-called normal shinobi forces. The mission requests the village receives are practically all accomplished by the teams and individuals within the regular forces. The duties within the organisation, like training and office work, are also carried out by them. However, when the times comes and the world goes to war, they'll become the centre of the war potential, fighting with their wisdom as their strength and their courage as their weapon.

Most shinobi belong to these forces, including Naruto and Kakashi. The various missions accomplished by them, assigned to both individuals and teams, form the basis for supporting the village.
Medical teams
Staying mainly behind the scenes, they are the war potential's back-up. Branching off into several units, such as one in charge of first-aid and one in charge of technical research, the medical care of the village is divided under firm conditions.
ANBU
A shadow unit, directly under the Hokage's command. They perform special high-level missions like torture and assassination. By forming the units as occasion calls, depending on the objectives and degree of difficulty, the missions are successfully accomplished.
The shinobi organisations seen in the other villages
The organisational system of the shinobi army corps is different for each village. Outside of Konoha, there are a countless amount of various official positions and units to be seen. These exist because they are needed for each different geography/topography, culture, costums, etc.
Hunter-nin corps (追い忍部隊, Oinin Butai)
↓A special unit of Kirigakure's ANBU. Also called the "Corps Processing Team" (死体処理班, Shitai Shori Han), they completely erase the person they're searching for by means of their superior assassination techniques and medical skills.

Head Shinobi (忍頭, Shinobigashira)

↑He acts as the corps commander of Kumogakure's shinobi. Ranking above jounin, he possesses the necessary authority and merit to be able to represent the village.

The one who rules the shinobi superpower Konoha and controls its shinobi army corps, that is the Hokage. Their godlike wisdom and courage are not only the greatest of Konoha, but of all shinobi throughout the world. The village rises and fall together with the Hokage. The road these four generations of Hokage have walked is the history of the village itself.

The will protected by, and passed on through the successive generations of Hokage isn't some secret jutsu or art. "to be like a pillar, protecting and supporting the people who love the village and believe in themselves." ~~~When they inherited that proud, burning faith, they have truly become Konoha's "Hokage."
The Hokage lineage
The First (初代, Shodai)
Going back about 60 years, leading countless shinobi with the same will, he is the originator that laid the cornerstone of Konoha.
The Second (二代目, Nidaime)
The younger brother of the First. After the death of his older brother, there was still instability. He established the foundations of the organisational structure and helped the village to develop.
The Third (三代目, Sandaime)
The prodigy that was raised by the First and Second. Having the longest reign, he helped the village to constantly progress.
The Fourth (四代目, Yondaime)
The student of the Third's student. He succeeded the Hokage name when he was young, but fell during the Kyuubi incident after a short-lived reign.
Go-Ikenban (御意見番, "Honourable Opinion Guards")
The advisors that aid the in leading the village!!
The Go-Ikenban are two elders who lived through wars as the team-mates of the Third Hokage. Because of their abundant experience and skilled ingenuity, they guide the village alongside the Hokage.

ANBU (暗部, "Dark Side")

The official name is the "Special Assassination Tactics Squad" (暗殺戦術特殊部隊, Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai). The ANBU engages on dangerous and difficult missions, including assassination and spying, among other activities. These actions are concealed within darkness, like their true faces. The members are chosen by the Hokage regardless of age or gender. They also receive their mission orders directly from him.

With definite skill, they support the war potential!!
The Medical Teams cooperate with the civilian medical institutions. They support and relief the war potential with their definite skill and techniques. They also develop new techniques, medicine and more, and conduct research into illnesses, the human body, etc. Even to jounin, the medical techniques seem like supernatural, or divine skills.
↓A diagnosis is derived from as little information as facial expression, behaviour, and the like. First aid is also applied with sure accuracy and swiftness.

Regular Forces (正規部隊, Seiki Butai)
The main force of the Konoha Shinobi Army Corps!!
The so-called normal shinobi forces. The mission requests the village receives are practically all accomplished by the teams and individuals within the regular forces. The duties within the organisation, like training and office work, are also carried out by them. However, when the times comes and the world goes to war, they'll become the centre of the war potential, fighting with their wisdom as their strength and their courage as their weapon.

Tokubetsu Jounin (特別上忍, "special high-level ninja")
The chosen specialists for each field!!
Tokubetsu jounin are in-between chuunin and jounin, performing specialized mission according to their respective abilities. These fields aren't limited to military ones like intelligence gathering or torture and interrogation. As far as training or research, each tokubetsu jounin's individual skills and knowledge are combined, resulting in many diverging fields.

Chuunin (中忍, "mid-level ninja")
The commanding class elite!!
Individual fighting strength isn't the only quality demanded from Chuunin, acting as the commanders of standard shinobi platoons. Leadership needed to command a unit and judgement to figure out war situations are also demanded. The particularly excelling Chuunin are also assigned education and selection exam operation missions.

Genin (下忍, "low-level ninja")
The main war potential that supports the village!!
Genin are the framework on which the shinobi village's structure and operation infrastructure is supported. Because of this, losing them would make accomplishing the diverse and numerous mission requests that are always happening to the village, and maintaining a mighty military force would be impossible. Genin are not the least important class in the shinobi army corps. For sure, their individual personalities are the leaves and branches that add vivid colouration to the big tree called Konoha and the war potential that support it from the roots up.

Standing not only at the top of Konoha, but above all ninja, is the Hokage. Is it an endless, distant journey until one arrives at that name?
Chuunin selection exam:
