I think this might be one of my favourite manhwas of all times, if not the favourite.

synopsis .𖥔 ݁ ˖
The story revolves around the main character, Chaerin Eun, who becomes the protagonist of a romance novel she read. She expects a fairy tale ending with the novel's love interest, Jeha, but a bizarre twist makes her realize the story is not playing out as it does in the book. She needs the help of an unlikely character from her class to defy the new storyline and find her happy ending -- if only she can figure out who this 'Unknown Extra' is first!

ok, now for the actual review (SPOILER WARNING!!!)
Some people may disagree, but this is my person opinion as I can deeply resonate with the story. I'm also skipping some parts since I want to focus on plot points I find interesting lol. Obviously, we were all probably expecting some type of romance, and the sudden zombie apocalypse was a great hook! Unlike other Isekais, she wasn't a weak heroine in need of Jeha's saving, and I like how they trashed out the concept of romance (Which I will come back to later).
I'll start with the first few chapters. I love how Chaerin slowly loses hope, obviously she's presented as a determined character throughout the whole story, but it shows the original Chaerins (and the devils) tyrannical personality as we see that trait in her slowly diminish. It also depicts her slow fall to insanity as she ends up killing Jeha's friend with a chair without an explanation as he would've been the first to get infected. Afterwards, she easily committed suicide. I think it's a great display of real life mental disabilities as Chaerin is unable to see any other character outside of Jeha. I have a few theories for this: my main one is that it's told that she kills herself in the real world, so she clearly had some mental problems. This can be things like social anxiety, and that's why she heavily relied on Jeha (This is just an inference, the reason is because she needed Jeha to continue the novel, and OG Chaerin prevented her from seeing background characters, but the fact she never tried before could be seen as a metaphor to her mental state). The only thing that slightly bugged me in the early chapters was Chaerin's distinct reaction to Jeha's first death, saying she's never seen anyone die before despite dying multiple times. I later understood the underlying meanings for this, as she lived in a world with Jeha being the only "Human", and she might be stuck with these creatures (Extras) if he died. It was a reaction of fear for herself, not worry for Jeha, so I'm glad her greed was shown too, she isn't a love thirsty MC.

Now, We'll discuss the main plot (so when she meets the first extra). I like how the author clearly brought back Chaerin's spark and determination when a new factor was brought in. Her life was repeating over and over again, parallel to what a regular adult might go through, and she was very comfortable with death at that point. I think it reflects her past feelings, too, the feelings of craving death because we're stuck in situations which aren't ideal. However, Chaerin found a hope for change, which she clearly clung on to for the remaining chapters. We see that she completely forgets Jeha (for the time being) to try find that mystery character. For the first time, she takes the initiative and works for change. She works to convince her classmates about the apocalypse to try prevent their death as the extra was in her class. In every try, Se-Eun Ham was the first to believe Chaerins explanation. As we all should know, it's because she was the devil (also why her lying trait was so good; she manipulated the story). Mihui Yang was the unknown extra, shown through a dramatic reveal. I really like her character, her introduction was her running to live stream the zombie and almost dying lol... But we all know the reason is because of her deep rooted insecurities. She believed if she wasn't popular, all her friends would leave her. She really did start off as a damsel in distress, but she's quite independent. She is the most optimistic of the class and frequently encourage everyone to stay positive and believe that miracles will happen, which clues Chaerin in on her identity as the Unnamed Extra. This is later deconstructed by the tail end of Season 2 because when she has a breakdown over escaping the world of the story and found it being destroyed, Chaerin quickly gave in to despair as well, exactly as the Devil intended.
I personally find Se-Eun's character very interesting. her (real) personality is almost one that resembles a child, as she seemingly throws a tantrum at the thought of losing "the game", otherwise known as losing her power. Her obsession over power almost aligns with a sugar high a child might have. Honestly, her immaturity added another level of complexity to the story. I believe this because without her confidence, she probably wouldn't have played around with Chaerin as much, and therefore wouldn't have lost. She doesn't seem like one to think things through (like me).
Back to the story, we're jumping ahead a bit to the point where all the characters are introduced. They're all equally concept so I'm not planning on doing a dive into their personality unless their relevant (like Se-Eun Ham). I'll come back to the concept of the devil, but I want to focus on an extra: Jihyeon Jung. She is extremely complex and one of my favourites! Each character has their own insecurities, and it really hones in on Jihyeon's mothers expectations, and the emotional impact she receives when she's unable to meet them due to a physical inability. She was expected to debut in volleyball, but was incapable to due to her ankle injury which may be permanent. Instead of support and empathy, her mother only showed disappointment. Jihyeon's self esteem was crushed and she then continued to believe she was useless. Multiple times she's mentioned how she's holding everyone back because of her injury, and her insecurities. This later stems into why she sacrificed herself. Personally, regardless of what she say's I believe her motives were actually a lot more selfish than put on the screen. Since she believes she's useless, she wanted to do one more useful thing for the group before dying. Of course, it was a heroic act however it didn't fully benefit the group. That doesn't diminish her character though, I think the human emotion evoked through the screen makes her selfishness more realistic.
So, that's my opinion on the most outstanding sacrifice, but there are some others I want to briefly go over. I like the irony when Jinhui Choi finally got to wear a proper eye patch. The manhwa successfully incorporates comedy into horror without overdoing it. She got her eye damaged while fighting a super zombie. I actually quite enjoy the team work the girls did when they were fighting the zombie made up of 100 zombies, the motorcycle scene was awesome. I like the fact each character has their own individual skills and characteristics (just like Jinhui Choi does Kendo, and can only use a sword when taking her eye patches off, like the anime character Rikka takanashi). Another honourable mention goes to Do Hana, who turns into a zombie in her first life. Not only does it push the high schoolers mental state to it's peak, but it also reflected how uncomfortable they were around her in the second turn (second turn for them). Honestly, I could go on and on about each character, such as Kim Seonyeongs character development and how she overcame the limit to her abilities, but I don't have the time to go over each character.
At the end, the plot finally comes to a nice close. (EDIT: I was actually really excited to write about this part, lol) It starts with the devil being revealed, which we know by know is Se-Eun Ham. I like that factor, but it isn't what I thought was the most interesting. I like her skill of having a "snake tongue" and how she used that to manipulate the characters around her. My main focus will be Seyoung Jin. She is seen as a poor villain, and both her deaths are treated with sympathy. Throughout the story, she's clearly suffered in the narrative as all she ever wanted was to stop the voices telling her what her character is and how she should act, something Chaerin could somewhat relate with. This causes the others to give her a second chance at life even after they already escaped the bounds of the story. Because of that desperation, in episode 92 She willingly turn herself into an advanced zombie to break Huisu's willpower in order to help the original Chaerin, and was shown to be the traitor. Surprisingly, she craves the peace death brings as it is one of the only ways for the voices in her head to stop. She's confined to a yandere trope, in order for them to turn on Chaerin in order to isolate the latter and then swoop in to "love" her. In season 2 she begins to manipulate the people around her to turn on Huisu in order to serve the original Chaerin's purpose. She's very much annoyed the others brought her back to life after the story is done, which is when in season 2 they wrote a separate story for her to be the main character. I think this all ties into her mental health, as they all gain sentience (or a soul) she'll become much more sensitive, just like when she became a zombie she was extremely sensitive to noise
NOW, the actual ending. Some found it unsatisfying, but I believe they just didn't read enough into it as many binge read this masterpiece instead of paying attention. In the end, she wakes up from a coma, the original MC (Huisu Kim) tried to end her life. She believes it's all a dream, or possibly a vision on the brink of death. She explains how she see's life very different now, and ended up finding Jihyeon Jung through a music she made. This was honestly so significant and heart warming. The readers were disappointed that it's sad that not all the girls met, but I feel this is a better ending. This is because it really compliments the relationship established between the 2 girls during the coma. I liked her reflection on life, especially as it's something I related to. Surviving Romance, as stupid as it is, is the main reason I'm clinging on to life. There's so much more to do, reader.
I want to talk about mechanics in the webtoon which I enjoyed rather than the analysis now. The most obvious one is how well the artists portrayed the mood throughout the manhwa. For example, the glitches in Jeha's face, and how Se-Eun was drawn next to Jihyeon is incredible! Some of the emotive art, especially when they cry, are drawn incredibly. The mood is overall emphasized through the background music which was masterfully produced. Another aspect done by the artists which I really enjoyed: at the end of each chapter, there's a class book with each of their photos. At the beginning, it was to show which characters have died, and which character's trusted Chaerin. However, in the later chapter's it shows more of the characters personality and whether they realised that it was a repeat (And if they're dead), essentially more indulgent in the story plot. I also liked the fact that it broke the 4th wall! It was so cool how Se-Eun got her power from readers, and the webtoon comments used was just the cherry on top. Honestly, this manhwa is the best I've ever read, I'm tearing up thinking back to it. Please, read this.
Honestly, there's so much to talk about, I don't think I have enough time to go too in-depth, let me know if you want a deeper analysis or want to focus on character relationships. (NOTE: I realised I haven't even talked much about the main plot, but the topic is too vast. I also haven't discussed the main character, Chaerin, much. But don't fret, it isn't like those manhwas who off track from the MC. It's very much based on Chaerin's POV and life, but it's so well written that we can emphasize with the side characters rather than leave them behind. I think that's especially powerful as Chaerin also saw them as "just characters" before, but they seem far more human now WITHOUT taking the spotlight away from Chaerin.)
For me, the ending was perfect. It wrapped everything up beautifully, and even gave the reader hope. It’s not often a story balances closure and optimism so well, but this one really nailed it. Honestly, it gave me hope, and I hope it gives you the strength to keep going too. What do you think?
beautiful.
