Does the manga go pass the anime or does the manga just end like the anime?

The older anime and the manga have two different storylines.
When the first anime started production, the manga was only at volume 3. The FMA mangaka herself requested to have different endings for both media because she didn't plan to finish the manga soon. That's why the story splits into two completely different directions after volume 4-7 of the manga and episode 20-25 of the anime. You cannot compare the following happenings anymore to each other, they're both on it's own with unique characters and individual plot solutions.
About the FMA Media:
The manga is still ongoing since 2001 with currently 93 chapters in 21 volumes.
The older anime ended with 51 episodes (2003-2004). A movie followed to close the open story plot in 2005.
There were also 6 novels released from 2003 to 2007. They're spin-offs of the original manga story and the first one was animated into episode 11 and 12 of the anime.
New starting in April 2009 will be the second animated TV series of FMA, scheduled with 52 episodes. We still don't know how closely based on the manga it will be but it already shows an anime original character and unknown story elements in the trailers. Yet we also got a preview on later manga characters (Xing).
Recommandation for FMA anime (2003) fans:
If you're not satisfied with the anime ending, you will love the manga. Most fans watched the anime first and fell in love with the manga later. It's highly recommended to start with the first volume of the manga. Although the story starts to split with volume 4, you'll find some minor differences already in the beginning.
Recommandation for FMA manga fans:
The animation quality and soundtrack of the first TV series (2003) is superb! There's a reason why it's one of the most popular anime series in Japan and worldwide. You will love it regardless of the story differences, give it a try even when you're usually picky with manga-to-anime adaptions. The best is to see it as two different media, don't get mad about the major changes. The anime sure has some nice ideas of it's own - even the mangaka gave it a positive feedback.
Recommandation for the 2009' anime:
Watch the older anime first and catch up with the manga in time. Not only are both media highly recommendable each on it's own, but you will also get annoyed very fast because the episode discussions will frequently compare between them ^^;
