This remains a @BluePegasus Entertainment Buseniss ® production so people who attempt to take this over without my permission will meet my lawyer.

Anyway, I’m here to continue this of course. First of all, hello. Second of all, I have an exam week next week and since I find that slightly more important than this (sorry guys), I decided to focus more on studying rather than the internet, hence why I’m so late with this.

ROUND 3: ACTORS/ACTRESSES

Ah ... ain’t that a beautiful bridge? After we’ve had the movie and TV show round, we go to a round that isn’t about the whole bunch, but on the human beings that are of central importance for the result: actors and actresses.

If you’re new to this game (or have a short-term memory), you can find the rules here.*

Since my exam week is next week, I’ll extend the deadline a little bit. So if you want to participate, send me a top 10 of your favourite actors/actresses of all-time before Friday April
6th 12 PM (CET)
.

If you have any further questions, please ask them in this thread or via PM and I will answer them!

*Please, PLEASE check that you have your names correct.

Game of Thrones' achievements are definitely nothing to shrug at. Then again, there's not really a live-action fantasy series that can compete at that scale. Besides it dropping in quality, it remained as popular. But popularity isn't what it means anymore these days, with the current social landscape we live in. Don't forget that.

Game of Thrones is a great show.
Game of Thrones is still a great show.

But that doesn't mean that when we reached season 5, it was still good, because that's the season why it went down-hill. The writing was lesser than in the previous seasons, but the actors still portrayed their roles well, although we're all on the fence about the three sisters. The thing is, the season failed at all the other areas that make a movie/show good too, it's cinematography somehow changed, not for the better. They got new stunt co-ordinators etc, which showed in the atrocious fight scenes and horrible choreography. Almost every thing in the show went down-hill (some more than others) in that season, and it was definitely the biggest dent in the show so far.

Season 6 got back on track again, yet, the writing remained lesser than the first four seasons. Something which went even more down-hill in the latest (record-breaking) season. Season 7. Which, by all means is not a good season, not at all. It delivers the most plot-holes and inconsistencies to date in this show, with every episode adding more. They're not giving a thrilling or interesting story anymore, instead they use time-skips left and right like crazy, and every scene or interaction is more fanservice than anything else. Don't get me wrong, I loved a lot of moments in season 7, but those moments, isolated. Not how they were inserted or came to be, because that's where HBO, the showrunners and writers all failed to deliver.

It's pure fanservice. It's not interestingly engaging good television. It's pure fanservice.

I still rate Game of Thrones very highly though, the first four seasons are done so well, with season 6 being decent, they somehow make me forget 5 and 7 at times. :nod I'm actually in my umpteenth rewatch at this moment (although I doubt I will go further than S4).

I'm glad Game of Thrones made it up so high, in contrast to the second most popular show in existence, The Walking Dead.
Which I'm not even going to start ranting out about, despite it having a brilliantly executed first season (Thank You, Frank Darabont), it went down-hill the very next season, getting worse and worse with each episode, till we atrocious mess we have now. I've watched until the break in the current season, and the last two seasons (especially the first half of 8), I was in constant shock of the writing, acting and.. generally everything. I have literally no fucking idea how this is so popular, how people fuck up so hard and how this can come into existence..

Quite a "predictable" top three there. But at least it wasn't as triggering as in the movie category :XD
Could we vote for the next category?

I nominate
Top Ten Completed Anime Series
Top Ten Bands/Music Group/Duo
Top Ten Solo Music Artists
Top Ten Celebrity Crushes (the diversity of this lol)
And Top western animated series please o/

My reaction to the gap...

Thanks for the game BP!

The list is good, and was interesting to see what ranked where. Breaking Bad did well without my help, as expected.

As for GoT winning, it's a great show. For many reasons. I would've considered it if I went with 10 dramas instead of 5 (then again it's not a lock for top 10 either). LoTR won movies, GoT won shows... fantasy is well received here :heh

My honourable mentions that didn't list - Justified, State of Play.

Yes, it's HBO's finest moment. The only real opponents are The Wire and The Sopranos. The first-mentioned feels like a passionate presentation of ... reprocessed material, while the latter is indeed brilliant but relies strongly on the fact that it was pioneering. I don't know who amongst you all flooded the Game of Thrones thread with spiteful comments last year, but those were pretty silly when you consider what the show has already achieved. The fact that a TV show, one that only arised from the '10s, tremendously popularized the fantasy genre even after we've had the likes of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter is incredible. Just think about its impact as a short-term influencer. But still, people call out the show for shit due to some complicated time-related themes in the writing, yet The Sopranos had quite a few of undeveloped moments that I hear no one about.
GoT is a fair call and deserves to be in the conversation, but I'd argue it isn't HBO's finest moment. You had it right with The Sopranos. What GoT has done for the fantasy genre on television, The Sopranos did the same for television drama as a whole, and then some. Time will tell how much GoT has changed HBO and TV... but there is pre and post The Sopranos eras for a reason. (and your point about the fantasy genre is true, but the same applies to The Sopranos which began in the shadows of The Godfather trilogy, Goodfellas, etc; if we're comparing to films of their respective genres).

As for The Wire... it's passionate for damn sure, but Idk about 'reprocessed material'. It looks like a police procedural on the surface but it isn't. It's a comprehensive dissection of Baltimore's troubles, adding in difference perspectives each season... it's incredible how much world building there is within just one city. The passion comes through with the series' commitment to display how the system is failing, while ignoring any temptation to make it more dramatic to boost TV ratings. It nearly got cancelled because of that though. It's certainly a great achievement for HBO (as you mentioned), gotta thank them for persisting, given the dreary content may not appeal to a large audience.

^not salty over The Wire not winning just defending my 10.

@BluePegasus

Just wanna say, hope you don’t take offense because I’m thoroughly enjoying the event through-and-through. It’s a game of opinions, so they’ll always be voiced when there’s disagreement, I guess.

The problems I had with GoT are deeper than just “time-related themes”, but I feel we’ve moved past this discussion so I’ll leave that for another thread. In the end, know that I still like the show, even when I hate it. For the first few seasons, I ranked it in my Top 5 shows ever, that’s how much I liked it. So really it’s the same case as with Sherlock; much of my criticism of the show is based in disappointment due to it setting its own bar so high.

As for The Sopranos, I didn’t know it was pioneering when I watched it. It was pioneering for me personally, because it was the first real “grown-up show” I liked which wasn’t a sitcom or the like, but even looking at it objectively over ten years later, only The Wire (and Deadwood, but it was cancelled before it really had the chance to prove it) has been an even match in developing every character and story-line to the depth that Sopranos did, with not a single line of dialogue seeming unimportant or out of place to the whole of the series. Game of Thrones was looking to be another one of those shows (when I described it to people after season 1, I at times called it “medieval Sopranos” and I didn’t say that lightly), but then I feel the creative focus was placed in other places.

In the end, you think The Sopranos owes a lot of its credit to it being pioneering and I don’t. All the while I think that Game of Thrones bringing about a(nother) renaissance of fantasy popularization isn’t enough to call it HBO’s finest moment, because when I think of HBO, I think of geniusly written shows rather than mainstream popularity, and unfortunately the last couple of seasons have had lot of the latter but only glimpses of the former, in my opinion. Now, if it was still 2013, I would have agreed with you more.

And yet I’ll be benched in front of the TV the very moment GoT returns. :cookiehand

As for The Wire, I refer to Brandish’s post above.

Anyway, thanks for this round and already really looking forward to the next. :worship

I've tried answering this before in another thread in General Entertainment.. and immediately after making that post I though "damn, I don't really have a fave but they'll do". So it's like the 'fave movie' rating... I'll try my best to give 10. Thanks.
