[mod=Halloween]Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.[/mod]

About the ending stuff, i actually bet that Time Paradox will end in the issue after Bone Collection, this chapter gave me the cancellation vibes.

Overrall, mixed feelings towards it, i think editorial could maybe chill out a bit, we're just entering August and they will already easily surpass 12 new series in the fiscal year, cancelling BC and TPG under 16 chapters feels a bit unnecessary to me, unless they really need the spot for a popular veteran returning with Kubo or maybe Togashi returning, but that i think they could give a bit more of time for these 2, even more as cushions for the 4 series that are starting to rank in the toc with next issue, but well.

About Mitama, is really weird because this chapter didn't gave any sign of ending in the next so i wouldn't rule out a potential "moving to Saikyo or Plus", because what was the point of making everybody believe the series were ending in that last arc just to end some chapters after out of nowhere? lol

Btw, if Mitama is "ending" on 36/37 so is very possible that we will already know the new series in the preview of 38 this week.

Togashi returning would be 10/10. We'll know next week if it happens right?

The faster a series hits rock bottom, the more likely it is to get cancelled early. I can't think of any manga that reached last place within the first 5 issues of being ranked and ended up surviving in the end. Usually, those kind of series don't survive for long because Shueisha decides cancellation very early if a series doesn't do well in polls.

If HxH is returning alongside Burn The Witch, i believe it would be in the preview or even a official announcement by Jump

I'm gonna share that bet with you, Shinuki. TimePara is so, so dead.

Regarding the point of Jump cancelling too many things...I mean, yeah. It's kinda what you should do when you have a glut of unpopular works, you axe shit. Mitama failed to pick interest in spite of months of defenses, and Bone and TimePara have just failed to pick up audience. Cancellation is pretty obvious.

Frankly, I'd be left to wonder if Togashi could even work in pandemic conditions. Even putting aside his chronic back problems, he's well into his 50s, hardly the type who'd be able to easily shift to digital, and he's a known perfectionist to boot. So it's entirely possible he just...can't.

All il say about the chapters from this week is, I hate Fujimoto.
It's time like this I'm happy I read VNs. I'm used to this pain. :derp

I mean, Shinohara did talk about the series rocky start, but clearly there was something or else he wouldn't have been able to keep going. Interest improved pretty quickly after the Student Council were introduced (which was Chapter 10).

I'm guessing that's the case as well with Time Paradox. Jump doesn't ordinarily have this many new series serialized at the same time, so I think there's just a larger amount of spaces up for grabs than usual. For the last handful of years, there have always been a lot of veteran series that were essentially untouchable that have now come to their natural conclusions. Mix that with the fact that Mashle is the biggest hit for all series started in the last year, and I'd say it makes sense we'd get more new starts this year than normal.

My point was more about "starting too many stuff too fast" than cancelling stuff, they just started 4 series yesterday but tomorrow they will potentially start 2 or even 3 new series already.

I agree the problem of overwhelming readers is there, but what's Jump to do? Jettisoning dead weight is a far safer idea than keeping it around for no reason. Otherwise we're just stuck with the Taibei Squad situation where a bunch of series no one cares about just stick around in the background for months and months.

Just breath, don't need to go 27 chapters for dead series but also not under 16/15 chapters just to pump more and more new series and potentially confuse readers, unless it's really needed for a hxh return or big author returning, we will see this week.

Chainsaw Man at #66 is pretty big. Other than that nothing really surprising other than MHA below both TPN volumes

The gap with the WNL volumes is really telling insofar as the series popularity relative to the rest of the roster.

What did you guys really expect? That since some vets ended WSJ would just sit on a lineup that is half flops for a while? They need new series that will do well and they need them asap, the lineup is in one of the worst spots it's been in since the mag began (from a sales PoV), they can't just sit on it and wait for sales to collapse lol.

Not surprised they're cutting things quick at all. If anything this is the most important time to be bloody until they have a lineup they can be satisfied with (WNL will also end by the end of the year, so that's even more spots needing to be filled).

Financial wise not so much, They have demon slayer money. They are still getting Demon Slayer money. If you take that 80 million circulation revenue chunks, and divide them up to 8 years (10 mil circulation in revenue/year), they still come out on top.

Magazine/Series Length could be a concern, since there are more series from 2020 than the vet line up. They just need to advertise them more tbh, and let them grow. I think this is the period where they can afford 2 Hinomaru Zumou's sales series, and it won't hurt them in the long run.

About the axe stuff, if the IDs is true again then Ghost Writer would be safe this round? Bone Collection and Miitama ending

On to this week chapters (highlight)

Undead is straight up fire, it has the "OMG I WANT TO READ THE NEXT CHAPTER ASAP" factor for me every week now, and hope it will continue to deliver. I also hope the sales will reflect that

Ghost writer: its pace is all over the place, and I have no idea the direction it wants to take. I guess the next chapter will decide it.

I got 2 people to read Hard Boiled Cop and Dolphin because of one particular panel in this chapter, so I guess it's pretty hilarious overall.

Act-Age: still in the calm before the storm period

Magu-chan has this calming experience while reading, perhap it's the setting of the manga. It just feel relaxing

Really loved TPGW this week (and from the beginning of the serie). I would like it to succeed in the WSJ, however it may be a little too mature for WSJ audience as the treated topics can be heavy (death by burnout is kinda harsh for teenagers imo). We'll see how it will sell but I'm trying to not get my hopes too high!

Ma boy Mashle is still amazing. I don't know if the author has a strategy to draw, but having easy to draw pages (with the dumb dumb faces of the characters) in order to focus on the important pages could be a great strategy to have really well drawn pages in the short amount of time he has, and the not so well drawn pages still have a funny impact.

Just because they're getting money doesn't mean the magazine itself is in a good spot. Their financial reports will be through the roof regardless this year, but long term it can really hurt them.

As for TPGW: the IDs don't tell us anything beyond that it'll have atleast 3 more chapters. It could end in 3 chapters, or it could not end. We'll probably know once they announce how many series this batch is made up of later this week (if it's 2 it's safe, but if it's 3 it's the most likely candidate to get cut).
