I still think issue 39 cover is a thing between Yozakura and Jujutsu (I hope we get that revealed today), but I wouldn't be surprised if a Kill Blue cover pops out of nowhere
Looks like Ice-head Gill is insta-bottom after all, on par with Do Retry's start.
Perhaps we've all guess wrong and Tenmaku will stick around for an extra batch because they're about to give Gill the Tokyo Wonder Boys treatment. They don't seem to do 1 vol cancellations any more but you never know, if it ends up dead last by ch 9 maybe that'll be bad enough to give up on it immediately.
Man i'm so sucked into the crazy Boruto leaks happening that i totally forgot about the cover or color pages but i see it still not leaked, that's weird.

kkkk yeah, the lack of leaks makes me think is Yozakura, other bigger series would probably already have leaked, but it's a bit weird that redon don't know since i believe he has the ToC page and in the bottom should've the cover + lead cp for the next issue
What if Ice Head Gill was Ice Head 'Girl', and actually had a female protagonist? Since dark stories with female MCs seem to be all the rage nowadays (if Witch of Mercury is anything to go by)
Would it have done better and not seem like dollar dime basic battle Shonen from the 2000s?

If the story is lacking, changing the characters gender will do very little. It's not as if it's like TC where people are asking for fanservice or are mainly upset with the MC, there's a variety of issues. I would only say it'd make a difference if it was in CA levels of safe, but it's pretty dead seemingly

Yeah having a girl MC wouldn't really make much of a difference, the series just isn't very attention grabbing. It's not doing anything particularly bad imo unlike Tenmaku Cinema and Do Retry, it's just too plain of a battle shounen.
It reminds me of Guardian of the Witch more than anything else. The art is serviceable, the characters are functional, and the action is passable, but being functional and passable isn't enough to survive in Jump. You need some bigger factor to keep people reading which it hasn't been able to find.

I think people's interest in keeping up with a manga goes beyond just the gender of a protagonist.
just because a series has a dark story with a female character doesnt mean its a formula for success...also Gundam has a crossover with the traditional gundam fan/mecha fan, and girls love, lovers, not sure the aspect of it being a dark story with a girl was peoples main interest in viewing it.
also, Ice Head Gill is already different for being in the vein of Norse Mythology which is already pretty rare for jump.
Okay, first off, thank you redon for the ToC. And I just checked on twitter and it for issue 39 it is...TBA. I guess we don't have anything about that yet.
You know looking at this week's ToC, looking at the bottom (5-6), I am getting this vibe similar to mid 2019's titles that included (The Last Saiyuki, Yui Kamio Let's Loose, Samurai 8, Double Taisei, Beast Children, and Tokyo Shinobi Squad).

Because looking at those 6 mentioned titles in particular and their reception they failed (not to say that Cipher Academy is failing, but that I am having the feeling that it might not make it). And yes, Samurai 8 did last longer, but it wasn't enough due to the whole Kishimoto attachment and it's sales even though they were bad they weren't that bad. But presently, with the current bottom 6 Tenmaku Cinema was an absolute bomb due to it selling even less than Build King on volume 1, Do Retry's terrible reception, Fabricant 100 failed to capture readers, Ice-Head Gill also failed to capture readers (well see but with the meme's yeah it is the sign it is getting the axe soon), Ichinose is on a decline in sales, and Cipher Academy is varying. I do think the latter did stumble right out of the gate with those puzzles and it did help with the focus on the characters, but I think it is to little to late. We'll see in the next batch how many titles Jump will green light, but I do think this might be the next casualty, but not this round but the possible next one. My guess they will only axe Fabricant, Tenmaku, and Do Retry first. Then the next round will be Ichinose, Cipher (maybe), and Ice-Head Gill.
True. I mean if Samurai 8 was good, then it would have been a different story and they would have been more prepared for what happened in 2020. But yes everything at that time was saved by the fact there was nothing to cut at that point in 2019 (except for Food Wars! but that is a whole other story).
Cipher Academy just got a colour page, its volume sales are growing, and while not consistently so, it does seem to be regularly out of the bottom 5. It's safe for now. Whether it'll stick around for the long term is another matter, but at the very least it should survive past its 1 year anniversary at this point. And then remember the Minus arc didn't start until beyond ch 50. Similarly I think Nisio probably has something big up his sleeve planned if the series can stick around long enough for him to pull it off.
On the note of Cipher Academy the Animate in my city (japanese otaku-focused manga chain) surprisingly has a whole little Cipher Academy section now. Not a full shelf or anything but there's a decent variety of products, weirdly more than any other of the current WSJ without an anime except Sakamoto Days. I've heard from people in other cities that their local ones don't however so perhaps the shop's stock manager is a big fan of it or something.
I wonder what you think of Cipher? Why it is not popular for WSJ readers (almost bottom TOC)?
After reading Akane and learning that "entertainer should not be selfish" and the way the Karaku cup went, I got reminded of Cipher. I feel that NisiOisiN is so fixated on displaying his skills in writing and technicalities that the readers' enjoyment is secondary. In other words, I feel the "sense of selfishness" emanating from Cipher. The work just feels so convoluted and not entertaining. It is not that readers are too stupid to enjoy puzzle story etc. I mean, detective Conan also has convoluted cipher and cases to solve but it is still so entertaining and much easier to digest than Cipher. I can also say th same about Liar Game (not a shonen but quite similar). Like what someone once said, NisiOisiN works just feels so pretentious sometimes.
