I really love this batch and I want all of them to stay.

So with that talk about Kill Blue, Nue’s Exorcist, and Astro Royale, I want to talk about the strengths and weaknesses in my mind and what they can improve upon. (Note that I will

Kill Blue:

-Weaknesses) The problems that this series has is mostly with how it was originally, the whole saving Noren who is also a prize in these contests. And if you have arcs that go from contests to rescuing hostages (aka Noren), it runs the risk of being formulaic.

-Strengths) The characters are great and funny. Plus despite the elements like the child narrate and somewhat misogyny from the beginning, it calls it out that is wrong and is completely self aware, which is good. Plus it has Bus Lady….Go Bus Lady! it has a good mystery of Mitsuoka pharmaceuticals and all of my thoughts on Noren are actually becoming correct, and ironically, I said it as a joke.

Nue’s Exorcist:

-Weaknesses) Gakuro is still very weak due to his design and him as a character. Which I won’t say that he is a terrible character and he does have his motivations. But with the formula it presents, I would much rather watch something similar but better like Tenchi Muhyo. But the other aspect with the harem comedy and action aspects due have a tone clash. Not as bad as the earlier tone clash with Astro Royale, but enough that just doesn’t gel with me but still see where it is going.

-Strengths) The showcase of the art and composition got better (I know that I shouldn’t talk about the art cause I said so, but that is one thing I can say). It does have some good character work with some of its humor. It also gave some good character depth with some of the characters. And the female characters are the reason why it’s selling. I always wonder who is this series is for (I know I am going on a tangent here and it may sound like a weakness so here it is in 3,2,1), is it for boys who are attracted to them? Is it for girls due to the whole push and pull with Gakuro trying to decide on a girl? It also has some action which has some amazing visuals. It has some of the things that make it special, but it honestly needs to tap into the strengths more while also fine tuning the weaknesses so it can run better. Just stop making Gakuro look pathetic with those dumb expressions on his face. If there is any comparison, he is like Lester in Lester the Unlikely. A debatable not so good video game but had some improvements in its narrative where Lester started very pathetic but got confident as he progressed as the main character.

Astro Royale:

-Weaknesses) For me, the biggest problem I had was the not so long fights and the tone of it in the beginning with the goofiness. But with the improvements, I honestly feel like some of the elements for emotional weight are being forced a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I do think Kinpa, story is good, but I just feel that going to the hideout and that Kinpa was tied to this place felt too convenient for the plot.

-Strengths) The fighting got better and the idea of the Astro’s is cool. But now that it is being taken seriously, I am worried that it feels to serious now. It needs to be pulled back so it finds that middle ground where we can have its serious moments but also have its lighter moments so we can breathe. It suffers from how Kagurabachi did from its beginnings. I know that it sounds like a negative, but I am glad that it is what I wanted, but it just needs to pull back a bit and I think it would be solid.

Kurumada would be the best fit for the 2nd last DB cover, but he hates Shueisha so I can't see him coming back.

Furudate hasn't done one either, right? I'd say Haikyuu's big enough to round it off alongside One Piece, it was Jump's #2 series for years until it ended and Jujutsu Kaisen took that spot. It's that or Yudetamago if they go for a final classic author.

Essentially after Saint Seiya he did Silent Knight Sho (which was just Saint Seiya but with knights) which got U19ed. He was pissed so he left Shueisha to do other stuff in Champion (though he did the Otokonozaka revival in Plus, so he is working with Shueisha again).

I’m almost halfway through the magazine. But I hit my roadblock with Nue’s Exorcist. Out of all the series I read, I knew I would be stumped. Now look, Nue fans, you do you and be proud of you liking it. I am just having a difficult time getting through the dialogue as I don’t care. Now it is affirming my dread choice. It makes me wonder how I would have felt about JJK if it stayed, but since it ended, it should consider itself lucky that I didn’t have to debate on it and respect its ending. And this is not a hate boner, it is just the frustration of wanting to get something out of reading it and then getting nothing at all that I enjoy.

I don't think Nue will necessarily follow Yozakura and Undead's route. I think it has a better chance than those two of getting a decent anime boost, since the girls are very marketable to the late-night anime watching audience. Battle harem + jump + being a genuinely good action series with cool designs and a distinct style is a potentially promising combo.
I think it depends honestly. From what I’ve noticed is that as far as Jump series go, the manga needs to already being going solid to get a boom. Basically selling 100k minimum pre-anime bodes well cause you have a fanbase spreading wom to anime onlies. That’s where UU and MYF fell short

That is the thing. Now unlike Roboco and Murakami which I really don’t like, I did drop cause I wasn’t getting enjoyment out of it whatsoever. The only reason why I am going with Nue still is the fact that it has introduced some things with its world building that intrigued me, and a few characters I do care about like Suo and Shiroha. And with Nue, Fusai, and Kasha, that has my attention. The only thing I don’t like is its humor and Gakuro himself. It improved and made it tolerable with a lot of my earlier criticisms, it’s just the you don’t know which good part is coming to make it a good friendly visit when that chapter comes out. I guess I got deeply invested when I did.

But if I stopped, I know it will be a very long time for me to ever catch up due to my nature.

When I made that list (which I didn’t number them), I made absolutely certain I knew what I was liking and how I was feeling with them at that time. I did put Kill Blue and Astro Royale with Nue as dreads, but at least I didn’t drop them. What they each offered is interesting and there are some pluses that I can give merit to their own successes. But when those negatives come in, they can be the ones that really weigh it down more heavily to dread.

If the newer series were bad, then Astro and Kill Blue would rise. And maybe if it was lucky Nue as well. Chojo was in contention as well to be dread, but the reason it stayed as casually read was because its humor was still consistent and still had my engagement. If the jokes got in a downturn, then it would have been dread. But it wasn’t and I’m glad that I found a gag series I enjoy. I know some here don’t enjoy it but at least I am glad that me and echo are fans and get a laugh.

So as much as I want to drop it, I’m to invested.

Apparently Bachi was featured on the news again for its western fanbase, which led to a few funny screencaps.

I know a lot of the initial attention was primarily ironic, and that it wasn't even the intent of Hokazono when he drafted the chapter, but I am genuinely curious whether in the future new mangaka will try appeal to that sort of overseas audience, if only in small ways like aesthetic. Love Bullet I hear went through something similar lately, wherein western fans got together to help sell out the first volume when they heard it might have been underperforming. It's super interesting to think about and it's really nice to see Shueshia continue using the whole "number one (on mangaplus) in the whole world" thing on a lot of the promotional materials; hopefully there'll be more interesting stuff like this to come.

Even if you feel you should be invested in a series, if it's a pain to get through in the now just put it on the back burner. I'm pretty flippant when it comes to dropping and picking series back up so maybe I'm not the best to give advice for this, but forcing yourself to finish a book or a series that isn't fun anymore is like torturing yourself. At least for me. Just come back to it in a few days, or maybe refresh yourself by starting over from the beginning. Even if a series like that gets good again, if you weren't paying enough attention to the few weak chapters that came before it wont matter since you'll likely have forgotten what was going on anyway. It'll just create a cycle where you don't want to read it because it's a chore, and since it's a chore you're not absorbing any of the story's details which makes it boring, etc. I had that happen lately for me with CSM. Felt like part two was just one huge slog until I took the time to go back and retrace my steps, and I'm kind of enjoying myself a little more now.
