I think everybody knows who President Bush is - but what about your own world leaders (if not Bush?) Who are they? What do they stand for? What did they want to do for their country and people?

Oh, and I challenge everybody here to try to keep political bias out of their comments and concentrate on the man or people for some of your comments.

THEN talk about your opinion. (But keep it clean.)

You guys probably won't believe just how ignorant some people in America are about the rest of the world. Hopefully threads like these will raise some more awareness. ;)

We've a woman for our president and overall I like how Vaira Vīķe Freiberga does the things. Can't say the same about prime minister, but ..... (no bashing rule).

Looks like the world as well likes how our VVF does the things, because she has been mentioned as one of the candidates for the UN general secretary position. We're proud of that.

Jan Peter Balkenende, from the CDA ( Christian Democratic Party ) - The text under the photo's he's holding says something like "find the differences", and he is mostly known for his total lack of charisma and harry potter look-alike-ness... The current course of the unpopulair leaders here right now is that of saving as much money as possible in stead of spending it to help the economy. But his most important challenger, Wouter Bos, is nothing but a empty "socialist" ( former boss of the dutch Shell company :o, you call yourself a socialist!! ) that tries to win votes because he 'looks good' -_-;;

Oh yeah, I heard about that - but I thought he had died already? Darn, I need to listen to the news more.

Is his family vulturing over him? I seem to remember something about that.

oh, no, he didn't die yet but it's doubtful he'll ever wake up.
I'm sorry but I don't know that much about the political situation in Israel, but you see, he started a political party called Kadima (forwards) a short while before he got a stroke. although it was created not too long ago many joined it and they won the elections in Israel.
Right now the Prime-Minister is Ehud Olmert who was on the top Kadima's list, he was the replacer for Sharon in case something happens to Sharonas well.
Basiclly Sharon made a big change in the political map in Israel, for years 2 political parties lead the political system in Israel and now the political party he started is in the lead.

My place........ *sigh*

A leader who got chosen by "the people" tries to capture the hearts of "the people" by arresting a few well-known and reputable businessmen as an act against corruption but the fire seems to die out REALLY quickly. Chants about world peace and this and that are heard almost everyday but as usual action speaks louder than words. In a government bank, out of 8 counters, only 2 are working while the rest are enjoying some leisure time with paycheck going into their pocket every month. In the post office, you can see 15 counters and yet only 2 are working while the rest, sitting in their respective chairs while placing a board saying "counter closed. Next counter please."

That's my country.

The country I'm living in is ruled by a Woman now for half a year...."Angela Merkel"
She is the leader of the "CDU" "Christlich Demokratische Union" (christian democratic union)
...a little bit conservative group...(but hey they're more open hearted as ever before)

but she has stopped the "downfall" feeling in the minds of the people......
and that's half the rent.....

Nothing big has changed in the past half year...but everybody feels like there is a tomorow now.....

We still got a social system (everyone has the right of medical healthcare.....a job.....and a life worth living) till now.....

this kind of a system costs a fortune....so there are some new laws that will do a little "going forward"....
but that's not enough......we got some lazy ones too....there has to be some which abuses the system......every state got some of theese...

But i think we will do it........

And in my country. The president chokes on pretzels, and when asked at first how to deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan, answered "We need to first blockade their harbour."

A bit too conservative for my taste, but I agree, they have gotten more "modern".

We still got a social system (everyone has the right of medical healthcare.....a job.....and a life worth living) till now.....
Good expression: "everyone has the right"
Sadly, it's not reality.

this kind of a system costs a fortune....so there are some new laws that will do a little "going forward"....
Indeed. The system is expensive and Germany's depts are high. Some of the new laws are designed to decrease the depts.
In my opinion some of our new ministers are sitting in the wrong ministries. Our educational system is being flooded with bureaucracy making it opaque. A German test to enter elementary school for children with foreign parents? There are six-year-olds with "German" parents who can't talk proper German! That statement is not based on assumptions, but experience. Before anyone argues about that point.

Geezzz My Country is ruled since October by twin brothers. The president and the leader of the political groupment wich wins the election are twin brothers. The second brother didn't want to become the prime minister but everybody knows he's the puppet master.
It's a bunch of Nationalists , populists , pseudochristians ( they're kinda getting fanatic about that, involving religion in politic ).They're homophobes (anti love parade and gay parade, oppenly declare that homosexualism is a mental dicease regardless of the opinion of the national organisation of shrink about homosexualism). And lately i readed that one of the deputee of that group said that "Vegetarian life style" and "Yoga" are very dangerous ideologies that need to be eradicated from our country (???)
Most of the elite ( intelligent people) are starting to worry cause they(twin bro) have no idea about the economy, they're eurosceptics ( kinda like ignoring the fact that we're part of the EU ). Keeping promising stupid stuff like more money for the "retired", more money for those who don't have job , 400$ for every new born child, though they don't have the money for that. Paradoxally they're trying to lower taxes. I mean how can you increase the spendind and decrease the incomes in the same time? ( populism :-)
The president has no tact and no idea about international diplomacy. I mean he's the president since 6 months and he already managed to bring clouds in our relations with Germany ,Russia and even Ukraine one of our closest commercial ally.
More funny: Their name sounds like Duck in our language. Now everybody makes joke about ducks. But lately i heard that a guy who was making animated joke (flash animation) about 2 ducks and sending them all around in the internet have been arrested. Reason: he may have offended other people by making fun of the head of the state. Geez i mean it's a free country. We're getting back to the mid-age. Hope the judges let him free.
Gosh i hope they'll fail to gouvern and there will be accelerated elections in September. Otherwise we're doomed.
Now they're making some pacts with the ultra nationalists (radicals) to have absolute majority in the parlament and try to change the constitution so they could have more power in their hands.
Look what happens when there's democratie in a country where half the population are easy-believers and dum'asses. And the so call elite ( people with higher education degrees etc...) doesn't vote or just few of them went to vote.
