Title: Chapter.47
Ramune
T/N: Ramune is a brand of carbonated soft drink.

SFX: KUWAHH
SFX: GABUH

Page 73:
Noguchi: U...
Uwaa...
Guy: W...
With his hands?
SFX: WASHIHH
SFX: KUWAH

Page 74:
Haya: Woah.
Did he just devour three cakes?
And that angry gaze was glued to the board the whole time.
Noguchi: Is he licking his lips?!!
Handwritten: What a hearty eater......
Somebody: Still... it's quite a strange scene.
In the middle of this serious battle with them dressed in sharp traditional outfits
they suddenly start eating 'snacks'.
----And you also need to consider that this is being broadcast nationwide...
Well, that's because the brain is the 'biggest eater' of all the organs in the body.
-----And it can only get nourishment with glucose...
For something like shogi,
you want the brain going at top gear.
----But
Souya is...
SFX: SUH
SFX: GARA GARA... KARAN KARANN POCHISEN POCHAN

Page 75:
Haya: How many sugar cubes did he just put in?!
That'll go straight to replenishing energy in the brain!!
And the lemon slices... did he put three in?!
Noguchi: Citric acid for recovering from fatigue and sugar for brain energy...
how can you be that direct?!!
Guys: We should expect nothing less from a Meijin Championship I guess!
These people really are monsters.
Handwritten In Bubble: (In more ways than one)
Handwritten Bottom: KYAH! KYAHH! ☆
Cake huuuh? Sounds niiice...
Handwritten Rei: That's what you're interested in?!
SFX: WAA WAA
Somebody: Uuuuu
Waaaaa
Sign: Shogi Assembly Hall

Page 76:
Guy: 3 cakes, gone just like that.
Quite a style of eating you've got, Kuma-chan.
SFX: BORI BOORI (Crunch)
Pres: It's already famous at this point. How during the Meijin Championship broadcast
they eat like this.
Handwritten: They always show 'snack time'.
Guy: And Kuma-chan's drinking style is quite something as well.
He's the man who emptied a bottle of sweet potato shochu with cake for a snack, right?
Pres: Uwah.
Do those go well together?
Handwritten: There's no way they can.
Guy: And on the other hand, when it comes to Souya......
he's quite a bland man, isn't he?
Pres: And I'll bet you think those are sugar cubes, right?
Guy: They're not?
Pres: Huhuhu.
They're glucose ☆
Guy: Uwah!
What? Honestly?
Then those are just fuel for his brain!
-----He really is bland.
Looks like it, anyhow.
In Bubble: HAHAHA

Page 77:
Pres: They do sell them now.
Soft ones they made into cube shapes. You can get them at pharmacies or convenience stories.
Guy: You sure know a lot about them.
Pres: Souya, he asked for them.
In Tokyo the other day.
He'd eaten all that he had so he wanted me to go buy him some more.
Guy: Tokyo...
Ah,
the Shishi-Ou Championship, right?
The one with Shimada...
I guess to make Shimada say uncle,
he needed to use quite a bit of brainwork and stamina, then.
Despite it looking easy since he went 4-0.
I guess the ones being chased are pretty desperate, too----
aren't they?

Page 78:
Rei: 'The brain is the
biggest eater'?
Noguchi: That's right, Kiriyama-kun.
Do you know what Ramune is made of?
Rei: Huh?
Ah,
no.
Noguchi: Glucose and starch.
Rei: Glucose...?
Noguchi: Plus you can make it yourself, it's easy.
Want to try? The broadcast for the first day is over.
----I'm sure we still have those ingredients around...
Haya: Why do you have stuff like that here, too?
Noguchi: I did an experimental food sampling for last year's bazaar.
Haya: Seriously, nattou, rice crops, adlay tea......
You guys are doing nothing but eating, ain'cha?
Noguchi: Hahaha. It's science. It all relates back to science.
First,
we take some finely-crushed glucose and sift it well.
SFX: FURU FURU (Shaking) SARA SARA (Rustle)

Page 79:
Noguchi: Then we add potato starch and... water to a beaker.
If that's all we used it would have no taste, so we'll add in some citric acid.
That will make it sour and make it more refreshing.
Handwritten: And the citric acid also helps with fatigue.
SFX: CHOPPIRI (Just a little)
Noguchi: Then we mix it together,
and heat it up a bit.
Haya: Is it okay to use so little of the citric acid?
Noguchi: There may not be much of it,
but it's ultra-sour.
Handwritten: HM HM
Handwritten Left: HM HM...
SFX: KURU KURU (Mixing) KACHA KACHA...
Noguchi: -----Then we mix that
with the glucose...
knead it well, then roll it nice and tight!!
SFX: GYUMOH GYUMOH
Noguchi: And there!
Done!
Rei: Huh?!
Haya: Already?
SFX: DON
Noguchi: Then we cut it into little slices like this,
and let it dry naturally and it will be perfect.
It's not fully hardened yet,
but go ahead.

Page 80:
Rei: Ooh.
You're right.
It's Ramune.
That's amazing!!! I never knew you could make Ramune this way!!
Noguchi: If you were that surprised by it, Kiriyama-kun,
then it looks like the experiment was worth doing, huh?
SFX: HEEEH HEEEH HOOO HAHAHAHA
Noguchi: Okay, would you like to make
some with baking soda in it?
Rei: Baking soda?
Sodium bicarbonate... Carbonic acid.
That will make it fizzy like soda.
Rei: Can I try it?
Noguchi: Yes, go right ahead.
Great isn't it, Kiriyama-kun?
Noguchi: It looks like you've begun to understand what makes science so wonderful.
SFX: HAHAHA...
Haya: This is science?
Handwritten: What are you talking about?
Guy: Of course.

Page 81:
Noguchi: Yes, yes.
Ah,
don't put too much water in!
Rei: Umm,
is this much... good?
Noguchi: Yes.
----Ok, get mixing.
Haya: Kiriyama, you're
surprisingly awkward, aren't you?
SFX: PUKUKU...
Rei: Ah-
Huh?
Did I put in too much water?
Haya: Kiriyama, are you a little kid?!
Why are you moving your right and left hand in the same way?!
C'mon, can't you make a square with your left hand and a triangle with your right at the same time?
Rei: I... I can do that!
Haya: Reallyyy?
Noguchi: Kiriyama-kun, it's okay. We just need to add more glucose.
We can salvage it!
SFX: HAHAHA... KEKEKE KUKUKU...
Rei: Huh?
What
----is going on...?
Noguchi: Okay.
Get mixing.

Page 82:
Rei: I'm
doing a club activity.
I'm laughing
and talking
at school...
Noguchi: Okay,
let's give it a taste test.
Rei: ..........
Noguchi: Kiriyama-kun.

Page 83:
SFX: KASA...
Rei: The Ramune
is sweet
and when I put it in my mouth
it falls apart
and I feel a lump in my throat as it dissolves.
Haya: Hm? Kiriyama,
this is way better with baking soda.
This way makes it way more invigorating.
In Bubble: Though so.
SFX: SHUWA SHUWA... (Fizzing)

Page 84:
Rei: ----Without realizing it,
something felt like it was going to come out of my eyes.
With every ounce of my being, I held it back.
Um,
could I...
take some of this home with me?
I wrapped the rest of the Ramune
in some scrap notebook paper and put it in my backpack.
I thought that if I gave it to Hina-chan and Momo-chan,
they might enjoy it.

Page 85:
Rei: I'd go see them.
I thought I'd cross that bridge
----and
about how to make Ramune,
about club activities,
about Noguchi-senpai,
and about Sensei,
----I hoped they would listen to me about to all of it.
Hina: Ah! It's Rei-chan!
Welcome!
Momo: It's Rei-chaaan!

Top Right Small: An article by Senzaki Manabu
Top Right Big: Senzaki Manabu's Lion Shogi Column
Big Right: The Brain is the Biggest Eater During a Match?! Sweets and Rice are Friends to Shogi
Article: You use your brain quite a bit during a match. And the brain needs energy and hydration, so there are many players that eat sweets and drink water during matches.
iIn normal games not held in shogi halls where title matches take place, they do not put out candy. Following along with that, your only choice is then to bring your own (It started around 20 years ago. Many nostalgic players call this 'the candy age'). However, there is often not enough time to eat during a match, and apparently in most cases people would bring the sweets home with them.
Sometimes there will be players that have medicinal drinks. Once, I saw a certain first-class player drinking a 3,000 yen high-class drink. That player said, 'It's for when I have to play a new game after a draw by repetition or a stalemate'.
A game will start at 10 AM and have a 1-hour lunch break starting at 12:10 PM. Here, you eat a meal, so you are free to both send for takeout or go out to eat.
From what I've seen, there aren't any players that enjoy their meals all that much. It always seems like they always have a sullen look on their face, eating something in a subdued way almost as if it's purely obligatory.
Although there are players that eat more heartily. Katou Hifumi 9-dan being a good representative. This veteran player is past his 70th birthday, yet he eats broiled eel over rice day and night. It's always the same, broiled eel. As someone who eats more sparingly during matches, I'm always dumbfounded by this.
In his younger days, Katou-sensei was good at (?) eating chocolate. He would chow down on chocolate bars during matches. Seeing it with my own eyes, I almost burst out laughing because those chocolate bars that would constantly disappear into his mouth looked like the purified iron I'd seen on conveyer belts during field trips as a child.
A modern-day big eater is Maruyama Tadahisa 9-dan. I've often seen him ordering out for sushi and eating enough for two people. Also I'd see him eating things like CalorieMate bars during games.
Still, it's pretty hard to have an appetite in the middle of games. It seems that most players go through them using the absolutely minimum. Speaking of which, I'm that same type. I usually go for tsuke tororo soba. I'm always thinking 'This time I'll finally have broiled eel for breakfast'. But when game time comes, I always end up with soba.
