Number 316: The Training Begins!!
Side text: ！
Naruto's enjoyable summer is just about to begin!!
(↑"enjoyable summer" = some event that's going to be held in the Tokyo Dome from 7/29 >ω<)

Text:
But before they begin the training...
Kakashi:
The nature of your chakra is "Wind"
Naruto:
With the ability to cut and sever anything,
this type of chakra is very good for battles
Naruto: ！
Wow... Wow!! I'm great!!
Kakashi:
No, you're nowhere near great yet. We only found out the nature of your chakra
Yes, you must first undergo this training
and gain the ability to make full use of your chakra nature...
Naruto:
...Huh?

Page 03
Naruto: ...
Kakashi & Yamato: 何？
What?
Hey! Hey!
Then what sort of "quality control" is used in Yamato Taicho's "Moku-ton" (Plant-based jutsu)?
Kakashi: ...

Text (Yamato): ！
Do-ton Doryuu Jouheki!!
(lit. Earth-based Jutsu -- The Rampart of Running Earth)
Naruto: 何？！
Wow! What?!
Text (Yamato): ！
Sui-ton Takitsubo no Jutsu!!
(lit. Water-based Jutsu -- The Plunge Pool Jutsu)

Page 05
Naruto:
A- A waterfall!
I have the ability to manipulate both "Earth" and "water", Naruto
Naruto: ！
What?! Yamato Taicho has two too?!
Those in the Jounin class usually have at least two.
I can also control elements other than "Thunder"
Then, Yamato Taicho has 3 including the "Moku-ton"?
Kakashi:
Well, that isn't it, you see.
Naruto: ?

Page 06
I can only use "Earth" and "Water".
There's no such thing as a "Plant" element to begin with
Naruto:
Then how?
He uses it together.
By controling the nature of "Earth" and "Water" at the same time,
he creates a new "Plant" element which he can then manipulate.
Yamato:
"Earth" in the right hand
Yamato:
"Water" in the left

Page 07
Naruto:
When you have two elements that you can control,
it's not very difficult to use them separately
But it's a totally different story when it comes to using both together...
The ability to control two elements simultaneously
and create a new element to manipulate...
Page 08
That's what's called a "Kekkei Genkai" (lit. limit of the blood-line)
You've at least heard this term right?
Naruto:
The boy, Haku, you once fought had that too.
He was able to use the "Kekkei Genkai" of "Hyou-ton" (Ice-based Jutsu)
He controlled two elements, "Wind" and "Water", to create "Ice".
That's a special jutsu that only those born into the blood-line with a "Kekkei Genkai" can use
Naruto:
So even Haku could...
That's why not even my "Sharingan" could copy it

Page 09
Naruto: ...
Kakashi:
I guess I should start explaining the training...
Then how about Shikamaru's "Kagemane" (Shadow Copy) and Chouji's "Baika no Jutsu" (Enlargement Jutsu)?
Kakashi: ...
Naruto:
And how about medical ninjutsu and genjutsu (illusion jutsu)?
Hmm, it'll take a long time to explain those
and if I explain it all at once, it'll confuse you so...
Why don't you tell him about the "quality control" of "yin (dark)" and "yang (light)" another time? ...Kakashi senpai
we should begin the training

Page 10
Kakashi:
...
You're right
Naruto: ?
Well then! Let's start!
First, we're going to train so that you improve in the "quality control" of chakra
Naruto:
How?
In this training, you're goint to place a leaf between your palms and try to cut it with only your chakra
until you manage to cut it in half
Naruto: Right! I'm on!!

Like I said just now, you're going to do this training using the Kagebunshin jutsu at all times
Naruto:
How many bunshins (copies) should I make?
Kakashi:
Hmm...well...
Since it's one leaf for each person...
Kakashi:
About this many?
Text (Naruto): ！
Kagebunshin no Jutsu!!

Page 12
That's a change. You're suddenly going into a "Bougin".
Hey, let's take it easy -- We've got a lot of time.

I'll try... :tem ... *lol* just kidding... you did a great job... but I'm surprised that you're the third translator (and the second to do so who knows more Japanese than I do) not to translate "陰" と "陽" as "Ying and Yang", which I'd bet my right ball is what Yamato's getting at. :amuse

Yeah, I seriously considered "ying" and "yang". But in the end ying and yang is all abt the balance of light and darkness, so... I'll get back to you on that (Gotta run off again~~ >u<)

PS. I was just asking njt abt the "right ball" part.

As opposed to my left ball. It's that whole inescapable Ying-Yang thing.

Since it's a relatively well-known term which implies much more than light-darkness in a literal sense (it's more like light and darkness in the metaphorical sense of two inextricably linked sides that there is to everything), I'd leave it like that.

Yamato: Why don't you tell him about the "quality control" of "yin (dark)" and "yang (light)" another time?

When I first considered yin & yang my mind processed this: yin & yang → warm & cold → durian & mangosteen ・Д ・ ... So I decided to just translate it literally >∀<ゞ But after you brought it up, I looked back at the manga and because the furigana is "in" for 陰 as opposed to "kage", I'm thinking your yin/yang is probably more accurate. Thank you, Iwanin☆ >u<b

Btw, I must make a complaint about this series: Kishimoto's many ""-ed terms make everything difficult to understand!! (I mean how can you do "性質変化" on yin/dark & yang/light?! @_ @) So, since I really can't make sense of what he's saying right now, I think I'll leave the (dark/light) (just in case ・ω ・)...
-- Yeah, cleared! *chop*

Guess we'll just have to wait. Hopefully by the end of this arc we'll know what the f_ck the "genkai" in "kekkeigenkai's" meant to stand for. I asked the ever knowledgeable Nihongaeri on this recently and he was as clueless as I, agreeing that the composition kekkei+genkai makes no sense whatsoever semantically. :darn

Yeah, given the amount that Naruto (the story) draws from ancient Chinese philosophy/mythology (which is pretty much an inevitability with the ninjutsu motif), use of "yin" and "yang" here is pretty much required...

...

Pretty much unrelated to the subject, but my wife and I have a cat whose name is 豚猫, and I occasionally also call her 豚猫師(think 陰陽師).

I didn't quite understand the problem here... But I'm supposing it's that you can vaguely understand what the author's getting at, only if you actually try to define it, it won't fit all the sentences properly? Sort of like with "性質変化"...which I'm afraid won't be explained any further as well...？Д？
