Translation Notes
*1 Kaiten-Zushi, 回転寿司, also called conveyor belt sushi or sushi-go-round, is a form of a sushi restaurant where the customers sit at counters, and a conveyor belt on the counter carries trays of sushi, and the customers pick what they want to eat off the conveyor belt, as in the manga.
*2 Otoko, 漢, means man, especially a manly man. I put Otoko Sushi because it sounds like a better name for a store than Man Sushi.
*3 Ganko, ガンコ, or in kanji, 頑固, means persistent, headstrong, stubborn, etc. I figured that Ganko would be the best name for a store.
*4 Negative Aura: The Japanese is マイナスオーラ, directly translated into minus aura. Since that doesn’t make sense, I put negative aura, although I’m still unsure if I should change it to negative energy, or more radically, bad karma.
*5 Eating Bizarre Food: The Japanese here is ゲテ食い, which is short for ゲテモノ食い, and the kanji for the katakana is 下手物食い. As far as I know there are no English equivalents of this word; meaning, both my Japanese-English dictionaries and Wikipedia (going to the Japanese article, and looking for an English article) failed. The word is not a flattering word (usually) when used to describe a person, and implies that the person is bizarre, abnormal, diverging from the acceptable (foods). I think that in this context it wouldn’t have changed very much if Chika had called Sotetsu “weird” or something of the sort.
*6 Costly Dishes: The Japanese here is 絵皿, or painted plates. In Kaiten-Zushi restaurants, the billing is done by counting the number of plates at the end. Therefore, different types of dishes are used to differentiate between different-priced items. Usually, the plain dishes are the least costly, and the elaborate painted plates are the most costly, and probably more desirable if it is free.
*7 His Eye. This is fun. It would be target his eyes, but Sotetsu only has one eye. I’m not sure which Koyomi said, because Japanese has no plurals. I think it would be funnier if Koyomi said “eye.”
*8 One Writes “Affair” and Reads It “Date”: Although this somewhat makes sense in English, too, it is more clear in Japanese. The Japanese is 情事と書いてデートと読む. The format is “ “と書いて” “ と読む. Kanji have standard “yomi”, which is the way that kanji are pronounced. Even if you look at this manga’s raws, you can see that next to the kanji there are little hiragana which tells how the kanji is read, and it’s mostly the standard “yomi” as the hiragana. (These little hiragana are called “furigana”.) If you want to you can also write this as “ “と書いて” “ と読む. (The kanji go in the first blank, the furigana goes in the second blank.) You never speak this phrase as the first blank and the second blank would be the same thing. But, sometimes, the furigana shows a nonstandard way to read the kanji. I don’t know any other place other than manga where this happens. It doesn’t have to be kanji, but as usually the kanji is the standard form for the first blank, it usually is. (It also can happen with English in Japanese manga, as those usually have furigana that are katakana.) This can be spoken, like Koyomi does, since the first blank kanji, which you read in the standard form, is different from the second blank. When it is used in manga, it is implied that the character spoke the furigana, but meant the kanji. It’s a form of expression for the mangaka, in a way. I hope you got that So basically, Koyomi is saying that when he says date, it means affair.
*9 What is affair: I must put that 情事, or affair in Japanese, is more of an uncommon word in Japanese than affair is in English. I ought to find a better word…
*10 It’s for His Money: The Japanese here is 金ヅル, in the form “Clearly, he is 金ヅル.” It means a boyfriend a girl dates for his money. Dictionary fail.
*11 O-rings: The Japanese is パッキン, which is a Japanese translation of the English packing, which I’m not sure how widespread this use for this word is but certainly for me, if somebody said packing, I would think of luggage, not leaks. In Japanese, packing only refers to the seals and so there would be no confusion between putting stuff in a box. Therefore, I used O-rings, which seems like the most common type of packing; although it may be a single type of packing that Michiru will buy.
*12 Ha Ha Ha: The Japanese is クククッ, which is “snicker snicker..”, but you don’t put that in a speech bubble…so.
*13 Chaohai: This is チャオハイ(草鞋). Japanese kanji and Chinese letters are basically the same, with different pronounciations. Touhou 董奉(トウホウ) uses the Japanese pronounciation. Lao Ye 老爺（ラオイエ）uses the Chinese pronouciation. I don’t know what to make of Chaohai, as the Japanese pronouciation would be Souai, and the Chinese would be Cao Xie. So, I just left it as is.
*14 Gakuen, 学園, means academy.
*15 The people of Higan; The Japanese is 彼岸人, or Higan-bito. Higan means the other shore. Bito means the people from that place. Still, I didn’t think I could make up words like “Higanese” “Higanian” “Higanish”, so I put people of Higan, although I think I will have problems with that later…let’s worry about that later.
*16 The “Wheel of Fortune”, “運命の輪”. This has to be so because of the Wheel of Fortune Organization, although it is better translated as the “ring of fate”. I guess it could be “wheel of fate” while still keeping the WFO initials, but I don’t feel I should do that. Still, we wouldn’t have to think of a game show every time we read it…
