For NCIS

Page 1
Coffee Time
Chapter 13 The Tanaka Book Cafe

最近の当漫画の変化球率が高いのは、気のせいだと思います。
The high percentage of curve balls thrown by this manga recently is probably just your imagination.

Page 2
I've got a bad feeling about this. One that I can't really seem to shake.

... This is the place?

It can't be...
... But the address matches.

... No matter how you cut it [look at it], it's got to be a warehouse or a work shop...

Well, as long as it's not a warehouse, it'll be nice if they can tell me the location of the shop [cafe] directly...

Page 3
I'm really in a fix, I don't have time for this.
The schedule for this month is pretty tight, I've got to hurry up and collect the data and finish it up.

Uh, excuse me, do you need anything?
UWAH
GEEZ YOU SCARED ME!!

A-are you the owner? Of the Tanaka Book Cafe,
Yes?
Ah, I'm the one who called from, "Very Afternoon." My name is Tagami.
Um... I was scheduled to drop by here today to collect data...

Oh... That... That was supposed to be today?
Yes, it's today!

Ah, well then, please come in.
Okay.

Page 4
Monthly "Very Afternoon"
Contracted Editor Tagami Keiko
Kabushiki Kaisha Kodansha [Publicly Traded Corporation Kodansha]
Address: 102-0801　Tokyou Metropolis, Bunkyou district [Note: This postal code seems to be fake]
Very Afternoon
E-mail Tagami

"Very Afternoon" is a monthly culture and life magazine published by Kodansha. [Note: Using different Kanji for Kodansha, same reading]

I'm in charge of a section called, "Coffee Time" over there. Every issue we introduce coffee shops and all sorts of different people associated with coffee.

Next issue will be our, "Book Cafe special feature," so we would very much like to introduce shops that aren't well known yet.

And so, when I was looking around on the net, I found your homepage...
Oh, the one that never ever gets updated.

Page 5
So, If you could let me take a look at the shop right away,
Ah, Go ahead.
Right, if you could show me the...

This is it. [This is the shop.]

Wha-!? You mean this isn't... a storage room!?
It's part-storage, part-office, and part-shop.

You just don't know where the lucky finds might be. The concept of this shop is a, "Treasure hunt," so to speak.

Page 6

I see... if you put it that way, it just might be something new...
You could say that it captures the fun and games of the small candy stores of yesteryear... when you were a kid, you'd have a ramune in one hand and slam menko [cards], or you'd play marbles, right? [Menko are a type of playing card, think: pogs]

(I see.) Then, how about the menu...

Huh?
Um... The menu for the cafe...
Ah! The menu. Right, right.

Uh- we're a bit short at the moment...
Menu [Note: Left to Right]
Roasted Green Tea
<del> Red Tea </del>
Cafe Latte
<del> Cappuccino </del>
<del> Espresso </del>
<del> Guatemala </del>
<del> Brazil </del>
<del> Mocha </del>
Blend

... I guess I'll have a cafe latte....
Okay, one cafe latte.

Page 7
Ah jeesh, out of powder already...

Paul Newman and Fukamachi Joutarou do this too [Paul Newman: Harper, a hip L.A. private dick whose business has gotten so bad that he's re-using his coffee grounds.][Fukamachi Joutarou, a character from jiken yakagyou (Trouble is my business), a manga by Taniguchi Jiro ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/事件屋稼業_(漫画)]

[Note: Left to Right]
The Independence of Taiwan
Malay Overseas Chinese Merchants-
The words of master Katou Kanji
-War Food and Agriculture
Imperial Farm -
Kouzui
Imperial Troops
The Taiwanese Musha Incident
Mahebo Travel Log
Kawanishi I[can't make out this kanji] Ouhara Katakura Combine
Yasuda Combine
The House of Thorns
The North Bank Unit
Advancement of Literature Overseas

Sorry for the wait.

Do you specialize in modern history?
Ah, thank you.
That's right, we've got a lot that has to do with Manchuria and other colonies.

Did you used to work at another shop before?
Sengendou and at the Kanda markets.

I see (Itadakimasu)

Page 8

Buho *Phbbttt

A-Are you all right!?
*cough *cough*
Ugh, I'm sorry

... It's got a strange flavor...
Ah, it's what you call a, "second drip."
Was the milk bad too?

*cough *cough

... Is there someone else here?
Eh? Ah, No...
But when I looked around before I didn't see anyone

Excuse me.
Ah, not there!

Page 9

Ah... A customer?
*cough *cough*

He's the owner of Sengendou, Mr. Senda. He's currently suffering from chronic respiratory problems so he's under medical care.

Why is he here...?
Tanaka Ku~n, I want a cigarette....
Because this is Sengendou's part-storage room and part-office.

Actually, in Gokokuji - that's near your company - I used to rent a storage room / store that came with living quarters

However, the monthly rent was 150000, and I wasn't able to pay. After about 6 months of defaulting on it I was chased out.

Page 10

Being homeless, I returned to my former place of work at Sengendou and started living with the books as a freeloader here,
And then I came up with the idea of a book cafe which I thought might at the very least should help break me out of my present situation.

Hold on, where are you going!? Didn't you come here to gather data!?
As if there's any data to even gather!!

I mean, this isn't even a cafe or anything! Stop trying to fool people and get serious!!
Eh, ah could you- your voice- a little less loud...
Ah-

Get down!

Senda-sa~n
You're in there, aren't you? Senda-sa~n

To tell you the truth, the land lord of this residence has started to suspect something, and has been ordering for our eviction under a breach of contract. (Since we rented this as a storage house.)
On top of that, we haven't paid the rent for about half a year here too.

Then it's obvious that a cafe would be no good to begin with!
Well~ I saw it in a magazine and thought it'd be a good idea...

Page 11
Really, all this is way too irresponsible...
Huh?

GYAHHHH~
Oh, Kemu
Grey, Tabby
and that's Gabby

NOT CATS~!!
I'm allergic to cats!!
Noooo-!!
No, not there! It's dangerous!!

Books are dangerous.

Ahhhh Noooo!!
Ugya-!!
*Zudodododo

Page 12
Hmm, I guess they didn't put it in...

Well, but, she was that angry about it, so it's no big surprise.

This manga is a work of fiction. I don't think anybody would take this as reality, but just in case...
Hey, bro, gimme this one.
Ah, thank you.

Summer's comin' soon, huh.

Even if it's coffee made with used grinds, as long as Fukamachi Joutarou's had it too...

It's that?

That's right!
Working at the watch repair shop or the secondhand book store, those were just temporary. weren't they?

You still haven't truly given up trying to create a bipedal robot, have you?

... I don't know what on earth happened that made you quit because you won't talk to me about it but,
I'm sick of watching you get by so lackadaisically while hiding the things you really want to do.

Page 10

... You say some pretty harsh things...

... Sorry.

But I've decided already.

But... And make sure you go to those interviews.
Okay.
The renewal for the apartment is next month so make sure you remember it. And the way the garbage gets separated is changing after April so pay attention to it.

And...

No, never mind.

See you.

See you.

Page 12

Excuse me sir, What do you think you're doing?
Eh?

It's all right if everyone doesn't think about it so seriously, right? Ah, that's it.

Relating to the chapter title. Toyoda Tetsuya's notes from page 3:
The subtitle for this chapter, "Chotto Matte Kure (Chopped Tomato Puree)" was taken from the title of Imawano Kiyoshiro's song. I couldn't really think of a title and the day after I finally thought of it I heard about his death on the radio. It felt strongly like, "No way!" as many emotions rushed up, but it is hard to put into words. It's not like I'm worried about whether we should pray for his happiness in the next world but rather it's hard to believe that The Boss died before he turned into an old shrivelled up geezer. This time, as usual, I turned in my manuscript late and I was spacing out but, the feeling that something happened that couldn't be undone wouldn't leave.

Notes:

Kiyoshiro: Chopped Tomato Puree http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pox4kHFwRQ

Relating to the blurb following the title:
To me it seems like there's a double entendre here, revolving around the dual meaning of amasa, sweetness and also naivety. In other words it's a rather cynical statement here about sweet naivety causing you to lose your way and causing you to fall into a rut (being bitter). While the bitterness works fine in english... I don't think there's any great way to convey this other meaning of innocence/naivety other than doubling it up...

Seems like there are a lot of cameos in this chapter.

草食系はまだマシだった？　脱力系はいかがでしょう
Anyone know some better English approximations for these idioms?

I didn't have a choice...

でもな　どうせ殺られるならお前の手で
Deserter: But, you know, if I've gotta die, I'd rather it be by your hand.

。。。どうだいもう止めにしねえか？
Deserter: ... How's 'bout we quit this?

何？
Gangster: What?

１１
お前　組に戻ったってどうせ冷や飯食いなんだろう？
Deserter: You returned to the organization but you're just a small fry.
だったら俺と一緒に南の島にでも逃げねえか？この金を元手にまた何か商 売でも始めようぜ
Deserter: Why don't you and me run away together to the southern islands. With this money we could start some kinda business up again.

どうだい？
Deserter: How 'bout it?

そうだな。。。
Gangster: Yeah...

１２
男たちが選んだ結末は、こーひーだけが知っている。
The fate that these men chose, Only the coffee knows

Notes:
Well, I really like triad/yakuza type stories. One's that pit a single man against an organization... I love those lone wolf type movies, Le Samourai, A Bittersweet Life... And those quiet yakuza type films by Beat Takeshi during the 90s... And you get the added drama of old friends having to choose between loyalty to an organization and comraderie. So anyways, this one is my favorite so far. The framing and the pacing... the repeated motifs of the back and forth with the pov of the gun barrels. The physical and spacial distances and tension that's going on juxtaposed with the friendly act of sharing a cup of coffee. Its got that hardboiled feeling that I'm a fan of.

Anyways, Japanese gangsters speak pretty different, and these guys don't speak like the stereotypical shounen yakuza but they are a little slangish. I tried my best to convey this, but its difficult to find an equivalent. I don't know if contractions and compounding is enough to emphasize how the slang might seem. I also was some what liberal with the expressions used.

There's a pun on balls/bullets there and I did my best with that, but since there's not an english word that I know that has that double entendre I couldn't really make the same joke. The other guy's reply uses the same pun but is even more difficult to translate saying that neither of them know if they're out (balls/bullets) or if they've got any. Since it repeats the pun and it would be even more awkward to use the same line again, I just compromised and went with the second half of what he was saying, which was that the situation was the same for the both of them. Anyways, maybe someone can figure out a better line for that.

こんな状況だから目分量。。。　いや手分量でかんべんしてくれよ
Deserter: I'm in a pretty sad state so give me a break about eyeballing... I mean, hand measuring it. This joke about his arm being shot could use some editing too.

The last couple of lines... I think its difficult, and I'm struggling to find some other word to express the nuance in it. I don't know if there's something so short in english that is so gray in its acquiescence. I don't know, maybe the ellipses afterwards is enough to express the uncertainty you should feel with the English.

Other small things... The "prizes" that they're referring to are probably the prizes you can get from winning at pachinko parlors. I translated it as consolation prizes, but maybe there's a better term for it.

Lets go let everyone know!
そういえば鍋島さんは？
RookieA: Now that you mention it, where's Nabeshima?
ああ　例のアレとどっか廻ってるみたいだが
RookieB: Ah, He's wandering around somewhere with "that."
ああ　アレ。。。
RookieA: Oh, "that"...

Notes:
These translations are free to use however for the time being they're pretty much unedited.

I made a big mistake on the last couple of lines and I'm glad I was paying enough attention when it was so late to come back and take another look at it. The play on words there is that Tooyama caved in (collapsed/fell) like a mountain (yama) falls. At least... I think anyways! haha. -_-;

I put the robot's lines in caps, they're originally all katakana, but its probably fine to just use a stiffer/robotlike font.

Maybe the title / name of the robot should be switched around. I think it might sound more natural to call him Detective Robot

since in english titles usually come first... However Detective Robot sounds like it could be a Detective that just so happened to

have a strange last name. Anyways, the emphasis should be on the robot part, but it sounds weird when Nabeshima asks him

what's wrong. Maybe I'll just edit that line to him calling it Robo-Detective rather than Robot Detective so it doesn't sound so stiff.

Maybe I should just drop "auntie" all together since it already says she's visiting her aunt on the first page. Having her say "auntie" makes me feel like she's a lot younger than she's supposed to be, but I don't know if that's just me. Or if girls call their aunt's "auntie" even when they're teens.

Does anyone even say Achachacha? She says Achichichi, so maybe Achachacha is like... close but still, I should probably take that out after I get some sleep or think of a better expression.

Is there another name for the ginkgo nut roaster? There's probably some specific name for the utensil.

full city roast - a type of roast, -> wiki.
Gateau - a cake store, maybe harumi works there?
Matsudaira Ken, Matsu Ken samba etc
Matsuyama Kenichi, played L in deathnote
Mastuda Ryuuhei, another famous actor

When my cellphone's fixed...

12
メール届いたか？
Yamazaki: Did you receive the mail?
山崎さん
Ueno: Mr. Yamazaki
まァ　そういうわけだから　後でケーキでも買って見舞いに行ってやれよ
Yamazaki: Well, that's how it is, so afterward go buy some cake or something and pay her a visit.

すみませんでした　ありがとうございました！
Ueno: I'm sorry! Okay.

どこかでカプチーノを一杯おごってくれ
Yamazaki: Treat me to a cup of cappuccino somewhere.

Notes:

At least this story doesn't have too many coffee related terms of which I'm pretty ignorant of. Looking forward to the later chapters that go on about beans. Transcribed the Japanese as well for anyone who wants to help proof.

I was wondering if I should change new year's allowances to something that's more western like birthday cash or something...

I get the feeling that the game store should be named Kong and not Cong... but since the billboard says Cong...

Other small things... I took some liberties with how I might envision a detective sounding. Some punctuation I know isn't consistent. Still swaying on the issue of translating more literally or more naturally. With this kind of manga verite / slice of life stuff it seems like it would be better to do it naturally even if some of the little nuances are lost.
