Tsugumomo, Chapter 01
by scrubb

Another translation I did for AnimeSigma. Download the official release from #AnimeSigma on IRCHighway or read it on MangaToshokan. Raws may be found here. Please get my permission before using this as a base for other work. Thanks.

Conventions: Names are spelled out the first time, abbreviated thereafter. Sound effects that I think are necessary to understanding the action are translated with SFX. Translation notes to the editor (not for publication) are marked with “Ed:” Other TL notes may be published if you want to edit them in.

000a
Right Side: Kazuya Kagami never goes anywhere without the precious “Sakura Obi” his mother gave him. One day a beautiful, kimono-clad girl named Kiriha appeared before him. Kiriha naturally began to live with Kazuya in his room. Then there's Chisato, Kazuya's childhood friend with glasses and a ponytail, who meddles in his affairs. Soon there's also an overprotective older sister who seems to want to take baths with him. Jumble in a huge-chested priestess, a good-looking sorceress named Kokuyou, beautiful women, and hot girls, and Kazuya's happy, embarassing, terrifying life begins... Brought to you by the overwhelming artistic talent of Yoshikazu Hamada, this is a low-key fantasy schoolyard love comedy.
Left side: Yoshikazu Hamada / I had to do a lot of research for my first original series. Even so, if you enjoy my work, I'll be happy.

000b
(no text)

001
(no text)

002
Chapter 1	Mother's Memento
Chapter 2	Master!?
Chapter 3	Library and Childhood Friend
Chapter 4	Library and Childhood Friend 2
Chapter 5	Curse

003
Box: When the cocoon-like folds of the obi came unraveled (TL Note: An Obi is the long, wide, decorative belt tied around a kimono.)
Box: I saw a pure white girl.

004
Box: A ghost? A spirit? I had no way of knowing
Box: ----however,
Box: She gave off a very familiar aroma.

005
Chapter 1	Mother's Memento

006
Kazuya: Huh...
Ka: Where are we?
Ka: Eh? / We're parting here?
Ka: You can't!!
Ka: Don't go!!

007
Ka: DON'T LEAVE ME!!!

008
Chisato: What on earth are you doing, you pervert!!!
Chi: You looked like you were having a nightmare so I was trying to wake you up, but then you suddenly...
Chi: Gro
Chi: Gro
Chi: Groped my chest and all! How shameful!
Box: East Kamioka Middle School / 2nd Year, Class 2 / Student Council President / Chisato Chika'ishi (TL Note: Pronounced “Chika-ishi” not “Chikai-shi”)

009
Box: 2nd Year, Class 2 / Kazuya Kagami
Ka: Whadda ya mean “wake me up”?
Ka: You just wanted to whap me with that paper fan.
Chi: So what if I was planning to wake you up with the fan!
Chi: ...What are you staring at?
Ka: WHITE
Chi: IYAAAA
Ka: GMMPH
Shirou (Left): Terrible

010
Chi: As if you weren't satisfied by fondling your classmate's chest, you have to go and peep at the contents of her skirt from below! Why, you're a shameful, devious excuse for a human being! Now sit there quietly so I can lecture you on the proper way to live the life of a student... (Ed: Some of it is cut off, so this is my best guess.)
Ka: Ow! / Owowow
Shi: heh heh Poor guy.
Box: Shirou Shiramine
Osamu: Once she starts her sermon, she'll go on for an hour or more.
Box: Osamu Osanai
Osa: Poor guy? I don't think so.
Shi: Wha?
Osa: A lecture from our braided, bespectacled “childhood friend”, one-on-one, after school,
Osa: is the reward in our industry!!
Shi: Whose?
Shi: Buuut, if it were someone from our school's top 4 beauties, like Misa-san, she could lecture me as much as she likes!
Osa: That kind of beauty is only two dimensional, though.

011
Shi: But the council president would hardly be in the best 32 even if she had breasts.
Osa: No no no. Those tiny breasts are the reward in...
Chi: I heard that.
Osa/Shi: psssshhh
Chi: Hmmph!!
Chi: Now then, Kazuya-kun, where was I?
Chi: Che / HE'S GONNNE!!!
Outline: Vanished

012
Ka: Ahh, that's better.
Ka: That bitch Chisato. She has no problems going on and on like that forever.
Ka: Ahh, the scent of sakura... If I don't smell it once or twice a day I can't stand it.
Ka: Well then, I should get home...
Ka: Hm?

013
Ka: ...the hell is that?
Ka: Someone's hair? A wig?
Ka: Did someone drop it up here?
Arrow: Avoid
Ka: How gross.

014
Chi: Geez
Chi: Where is Kazuya-kun? And I figured I could keep lecturing him while we walked home together.
Ka: Hel
Ka: Heeelllp meeeeee!!!
Ka: EEEEEEK
Ka: GET AWAY!

015
Ka: Guh
Ka: What is that? What the hell is going on?
Kiriha: It's an Amasogi. (TL Note: An Amasogi is a girls' hairstyle popular in the Heian period (794-1185 AD.), but it seems to be a manifestation of some kind of evil spirit here.)
Ka: Huh? Who just said that?...
Ki: Lo! It cometh! (TL Note: See special translators note at the end.)

016
Box: But... / Wha...?
Box: Falling...
Box: Below...asphalt...

017
Box: Ahh
Box: I'm gonna die.
Ki: Imbecile

018-022
(No text)

023
Ki: Hey Kazuya, it's been a while.
Box: The scent of sakura...

024
Ka: ......and you are?
Ki: Such
Ka: Such?
Ki: INGRATITUDE!!!

025
Ki: Hmph!
Ka: BLACK!!
Ki: Oh ho
Ki: So there you are.

026
Ka: Umm... / We're in a kind of dangerous situation right here. You should quickly...
Ki: Kazuya,
Ki: That's the host.
Ka: Hah?

027
Ka: GYAAAA
Ka: NOT AGAAAAIN
Ki: Keep your hands off others' property.

028
Ki: This one's mine, fool! (Ed: That's literally how she says it...)

029
Ka: P-Property, you say...
Ki: That's the second time I've saved thy life. Hast thou a problem?
Ka: Bwaaah! I thought I was monster food, but now I've been made a monster's lackey.
Ki: Grr

030
Ka: KH-YAAAA!!
Ki: Who art thou calling a monster, imbecile! / I am a Tsukumogami! How durst thou equate us! (TL Note: See pg. 46 for Tsukumogami definition.)
Ka: B-B-B-But there is kind of a similarity!!
Ki: What's that, O idiot?
Monster: Kazuya-san...
Ka: IYAAAA!!
Ki: Sooo, what wouldst thou do, Kazuya? Be my servant and I shall save thee!!
Ka: Fine, fine, I get it!!
Ka: I'll be your servant or whatever! Just save meee!

031
Ki: I accept!
Mon: KAZUYA-SAN!!
Ki: I'm your opponent, bitch!

032
Mon: Geh......
Ki: Ye do not have time to be concerned about Kazuya!!
Ki: Obi Punch!! / Take that!

033
Ki: Obi Suplex!!
Ka: Am-Amazing!
Ka: Ack / But that monster is one of my classmates!
Ka: You can't kill her!!
Ki: Thou art a noisy one indeed.
Ki: Being possessed to that extent must be exhausting.

034
Ki: Right?
Ki: ...Your feelings are truly immense.
Ki: But your love won't be returned by indulging it in that Amasogi you summoned.
Ki: Take back your consciousness / or your feelings will be consumed. (Ed: Good luck fitting all that in the bubble.)
Ki: Sever the links between yourself and the Amasogi. / Do that and you will halt the spread of the curse.

035
Girl: VA (Ed: 6x)
Ki: Oh / So that's how it is.
Ki: Crush the “Amasogi”and the host escapeth not uninjured.
Ki: Hate me not for it.
Girl: If I can't have him...

036
Girl: I'll destroy him!

037
Ka: A-A-A-Are you OK!?
Ki: Hmph / It's nothing. They missed the vital spots. / More importantly, art thou alright?
Ka: Oh?
Ka: Yeah...

038
Ka: It kinda got my arm, but otherwise I'm fine.
Ka: Owww...
Ka: Umm...?
Ki: That's it! No more fucking around, you piece of shit!

039
Girl: GHAKHAA (Ed: choking sounds)

040
Ki: I'ma put a hole straight through that damn Amasogi!!

041
Ki: .......hmph

042
Ki: You better give Kazuya your thanks.
Ka: She was wearing that possessed wig... / but I wonder why she attacked me.
Ki: Hmm
Ki: As her feelings for you increased, they settled in the wig, turning it into an Amasogi. / If she was captured by it, it probably invaded through some orifice.
Ka: Eww (Note: See pg. 025? O.o)
Ka: B-but ya know, I've never been close enough to a girl for one to be that obsessed over me...
Ki: Haanh?

043
Ki: If that's true, then that must be a boy.
Ka: L-Leaving that aside, could you explain more about yourself and the Amasog... / Huh?
Outline: Vanished
Ka: She's gone.
Teacher: HEY YOUUU!!
T: It's way past time to go home. The hell're ya doin here?
Ka: GAAAH! I'm sorry! But this girl over here collapsed!

044
Ka: I'm hooome.
Sister: Welcome back, Yakkun! I'm about to take a bath so you should join meee! <3
Ka: Get real! / I'm not a kid anymore!

045
Box: I really can't remember.

046
Box: That girl who saved me earlier...I wonder who she could have been.
Ki: Hey Kazuya.
Box: She seemed to know who I was, but I don't remember seeing her before at all.
Box: She said she was a Tsukumogami
Box: Tsukumogami: A very old item, when it has existed for a very long time, may come to host a soul or a spirit of the dead and transform into a type of monster.
Ka: So it's a monster after all.
Box: When I fell from the rooftop, everything spilled out of my bag...
Box: I looked everywhere for that Obi mom gave me, but I never found it.
Box: Which means that that girl...

047
Kids: Little bird, little bird, / Sitting in his cage. / When / Oh, when / Will he come out? / Up at the break of dawn. / Crane slipped and turtle fell. / Who is behind you, can you... (TL Note: This is a Japanese kids' game called “Kagome Kagome”.)

048
Ka: AAAGH!!!
Ka: Haa (Ed: 4x)
Ka: A dream...

049
(just booty)

050
Sis: Yakkun! What's wronnnng!?!?
Ka: N-n-n..Nothing. Nothing.
Sis: Eh? Really? There was this terrible scream...
Sis: and a big thud sound
Ka: It's fine, really!
Ki: Imbecile...

051
Title: Dual-Ended
Box: Used by Tsukumogami,
Box: are the versatile “Dual Ends”. / Let's see some of their many uses.
Ki: I can stab enemies by making a drill shape.
Ka: If she wraps it around her chest, it becomes like a sport bra.
Ki: I can smash enemies by making a hammer shape.
Ka: If she wraps it around her hips, it becomes like a loin cloth.
Ka: Now she can be a female sumo wrestler!

Chapter 01 END

Special TL note: Kiriha speaks in an old form of Japanese, rendered here using early modern English, or “Shakespearean” English. For those of you unfamiliar, the main differences are in certain grammar (“thou wert”, “mine apple”, “he speaketh”, etc.), and certain phrasing conventions. At the same time, the type of language she uses is more like a warrior than a thespian. To maintain the nuance of archaic language, but to keep her from sounding too cheesy, I've translated her lines using mostly modern wording and spelling, but with the older grammar where appropriate. I hope it makes sense!
