We start first from Adachi Sensei’s boy issue!!!<br /><br />昔々々…<br />Narrator (Adachi): Long, long, long ago…<br /><br />昭和30年代―<br />The thirtieth year of the Showa era― *(1955)<br /><br />「お断り」絵に多少のウソ、大げさな表現があります。<br />Bottom right: (Warning) The picture is somewhat of an exaggerated representation.<br /><br />Adachi:小学生だった僕にとって、漫画といえば貸本マンガであった。<br />For me as an elementary student, when you said manga, you meant rental manga.<br /><br />そのころの雑誌マンガはいわゆる児童マンガで、大人になれば自然と卒業するものであったように思う…<br />The magazine mangas at that time were the so-called children’s stories and when you became an adult, you naturally grew out of them…<br /><br />―当時　町のアチコチに貸本屋なるものがありまして、<br />―At that time, there were book rental stores here and there around town,<br /><br />Page 3<br /><br />狭い店内の棚いっぱいに貸本屋向けに描かれたマンガ（劇画）の単行本が置かれていました。<br />Adachi: and the cramped stores’ shelves would be full of manga (manga strips) drawn in book form to be lent out.<br /><br />その世界はB級映画のような暗さと怪しさとインチキ臭さに溢れ、画も話も雑誌マンガに比べるとかなり乱暴で…<br />That world was flowing with suspicion, the stench of fraud, and darkness like that in a B class movie. Stories and pictures, compared with today’s, were pretty violent…<br /><br />世の良識（？）ある大人たち言わせれば有害図書以外の何モノでもなかった<br />If you ask adults who might know a thing or two about the world, they’d tell you it was nothing but poison for the mind.<br /><br />ーが、<br />―But, <br /><br />しかしー<br />Yet―<br /><br />そこで若き作家たちが行った漫画（劇画）の可能性を模索する数多くの挑戦は、のちの雑誌マンガをさらには漫画界を大きく変えて行く事になるのである。<br />the many attempts by those young authors exploring potential in manga (manga strips), would go on and greatly change future manga magazines, and even the manga world.<br /><br />ーね、50歳以上のオジさん?<br />―Ain’t that right, you old man? <br /><br />Page 4<br /><br />貸本漫画には読者の投稿ページがありまして…<br />Adachi: In the rental manga, there were pages for readers’ submissions, and,<br /><br />今では考えられない事ですが、<br />though it’s something unimaginable now,<br /><br />郵便!<br />Postman: Mail!<br /><br />そこにお便りや絵が採用されると、記念品として作者の生原画がもらえたのです。<br />Adachi: if your letters or pictures were put there, you got an original picture by an artist as a token.<br /><br />ーで<br />―So,<br /><br />小学生のあだち充は3つ上の兄と一緒に、その原画欲しさに毎日毎日似顔絵やカットを描きまくっておりましたとサ。<br />wanting those pictures, an elementary school Adachi Mitsuru with his 3 years older brother, drew faces and illustrations day after day. <br /><br />そのとき集めた原画は、さいとう・たかを、長島慎二、うめずかずお、滝田ゆう、水木しげる、平田弘史、つげ義春、ありかわ栄一（園田光義）等々…<br />The pictures we collected at that time were from Saito Tako, Nagashima Shinji, Umezu Kazuo, Takita Yu, Mizuki Shigeru, Hirata Hiroshi, Tsuge Yoshiharu, Arikawa Eiichi (Sonoda Mitsuyoshi), etc…<br /><br />今でも我が家のお宝であります。<br />Even now they’re the treasures of my home.<br /><br />ーてなわけで、<br />―With that being said,<br /><br />Page 5<br /><br />昭和34年に創刊された「少年サンデー」にお目にかかることもなく、画は描いていても原画集めが目的で・・・・・・<br />Adachi: having never laid eyes on ‘Shonen Sunday’, which was started in the year Showa, 34, and though I was drawing, it was only to collect artists’ pictures, <br /><br />ー当然、漫画家になろうなどという親不孝な考えはこの時微塵もなかったのでございます。<br />naturally, it had never crossed my mind to become a something like a mangaka at this time.<br /><br />将来の夢　安定サラリーマン　充<br />Written: (right side) Future Dream (middle) Stable Office Worker (bottom left) Mitsuru<br /><br />そんな貸本屋通いを始める少し前…<br />A little before starting to go to rental book stores like mentioned…<br /><br />夏は連日の雷、冬はカラッ風が吹き荒れる群馬でも、比較的穏やかな10月のある日ー　<br />even in Gunma which has summer days of lightning, and winter days of fierce dry winter, on a relatively calm October day―<br /><br />忠治　ご用だ!<br />Written: Chuji, Come out!<br /><br />お隣の新潟方向に一つの星が光った。<br />a star in the direction of neighboring Niizuma brightly shone.<br /><br />うるせい星だなぁ。<br />Mitsuru: What a noisy star.<br /><br />Adachi:それが漫画界の希望の星であったことを知るのは20年後の話である…<br />It would be 20 years later that I’d learn that was the star of hope for the manga world.<br /><br />Page 6<br /><br />幼少偏<br />Title: The Preschool Chapter<br /><br />あだち先生が少年時代に目撃した’うるせい希望の星’。高橋先生の「幼少偏」にバトンタッチです!<br />Left: At noisy star of hope witnessed by Adachi in his boyhood, the baton is passed to Takahashi’s Preschool volume!<br /><br />開業医の父は絵が上手で、<br />Narrator (Takahashi): My doctor dad was good at drawings, and<br /><br />枕の下に入れてよい初夢を見なさい。<br />Dad: Put it under your pillow and dream a good dream for the new year.<br /><br />おめでたい宝船の絵とか<br />Written:A simple picture of the treasure ship *(A tradition for the first dream of a year. My head’s feels like it’s on fire……<br /><br />なんかスゴイ漫画だった。<br />It was a kinda bloody manga.<br /><br />誰!?<br />Rumiko:Who!?<br /><br />作者が誰か確かめぬまま、<br />Takahashi: Not knowing who the author was,<br /><br />確かめろよ<br />Under the hand: Be sure to check<br /><br />その作品は深く心に残った。<br />that piece deeply remained in my mind.<br /><br />Page 9<br /><br />同じ頃、兄が買ってたCOMという本の読者投稿コーナーで…<br />Takahashi: At the same time, in the submission corner of a book called COM my brother bought…<br /><br />佳作<br />Above the hand: Honorable mention<br /><br />出会ってました。<br />I met him.<br /><br />あだち充…<br />Rumiko:Adachi Mitsuru…<br /><br />16歳…？<br />16!?<br /><br />ねたましい。<br />Nice to be him…<br /><br />10才<br />Written:10<br /><br />初めてペンを持ったのは小学校6年。<br />Takahashi: The first time I held a pen, I was in the 6th grade.<br /><br />ガラスペン<br />Written:Glass pen<br /><br />ばきっ<br />SFX:Snap<br /><br />すぐ折れる<br />Written:Breaking right away.<br /><br />初投稿は中学一年ごろだったろうか<br />My first piece submission was probably in the first year of junior high.<br /><br />投稿先はもちろん少年サンデー。<br />Of course to Shonen Sunday.<br /><br />本に載りたい。<br />Rumiko:I wanna appear in the book<br /><br />SFX:わくわく<br />Bu dum Bu dum<br /><br />童話をモチーフにした四コマ連作を十数枚。<br />Takahashi: It was about 10 pages, four frames each, based on a children’s story.<br /><br />一時審査は通過した。<br />It passed the first review.<br /><br />名前載った。<br />Rumiko:It’s my name.<br /><br />学校<br />Sign: School<br /><br />Page 10<br /><br />高校偏<br />Title: Senior High Chapter<br /><br />Adachi: Long, long ago…<br /><br />昭和40年代ー<br />The 40th year of Showa―<br /><br />高校生の僕は授業が終われば商業美術部員としてレタリングとポスター描きー<br />When classes were over, the high school me did some lettering and drew posters for the commercial art club―<br /><br />夜は友達と麻雀、夜中はラジオの深夜放送。<br />At night it was Mahjong with friends listening to late night radio.<br /><br />オールナイトニッポン<br />Music: All night Japan ♪<br /><br />ー当然、朝は遅刻というごくふつうの高校生活を送っていた。<br />―Naturally, I lead an utterly normal high school life, being late for school and such.<br /><br />ーのですが…<br />―But anyways…<br /><br />Page 11<br /><br />16歳を目の前にした昭和42年1月ー<br />Adachi: January, Showa 42, with my 16th birthday in front of me―<br /><br />僕ら世代にとって伝説となる雑誌が創刊された。<br />A magazine that would become a legend for our generation was started.<br /><br />漫画好きにはたまらない執筆陣と新人育成に力を入れたその雑誌には、漫画予備校と呼ばれる新人投稿ページがあり。<br />That magazine put effort in nourishing newcomers and writers who couldn’t help loving manga, and there was a section for newcomers called the Manga Cram School. <br /><br />その投稿メンバーからのちにプロになった人達の顔ぶれはなんとも多彩で今でも感動ものです。<br />The line-up of those who contributed and later on became professionals was so diverse it impresses me even today.<br /><br />ーで、漫画家をあきらめ東京のデザイン会社で働いた兄が、<br />And my brother who quit being a mangaka and was at a design company in Tokyo,<br /><br />一本書いて送ってみ。ひまだろ?<br />Brother: Try sending something. Got time, no?<br /><br />それまで一度もコマを割った作品など描いたことのなかった僕は、<br />Adachi: And me who’d never once drawn a piece with frames,<br /><br />高校は坊主でした<br />Written:I had a butch cut in high school<br /><br />どうやって?<br />Mitsuru:How?<br /><br />Page 12<br /><br />これ読めば。<br />Brother:How ‘bout you read this?<br /><br />そのとき渡されたのが…<br />Adachi: What was passed at that time was…<br /><br />マンガ家入り門<br />Magazine Title:Becoming a Mangaka<br /><br />これが親不孝駅への切符となった。<br />It became a one-way ticket to Disobedience Station.<br /><br />ネームって何?<br />Mitsuru:What’s a ‘name’?<br /><br />画コンテストって何?<br />What’s a ‘picture contest’?<br /><br />締め切りって何？<br />What’s a ‘deadline’?<br /><br />これは今でもわからない<br />Written:I still don’t know this one<br /><br />なんとかかんとか仕上げてみたものの、自身も何もあったもんじゃない。<br />Adachi: In some sense I finished the piece, but I didn’t feel good about it.<br /><br />とりあえず送ってみたら……<br />I sent it for the time being and……<br /><br />ーホメられた<br />was complimented<br /><br />これにはぼくより兄が驚いた。<br />My brother was more surprised at this than me.<br /><br />調子に乗って次を描く…<br />Feeling good, I drew another…<br /><br />Page 13<br /><br />思えば、深夜ラジオを聞きながら漫画を描くという、今も変わらぬ生活がこのときから始まったのである。<br />Adachi: When I think about it, me listening to the late night radio while drawing manga is a lifestyle that started at that time and hasn’t changed.<br /><br />パックインミュージック<br />Music:Pucking Music ♪ *(An NHK late night radio program)<br /><br />気がつくとすっかりCOMの常連さんに…<br />Then I realized, I had completely become a regular sender to COM…<br /><br />これで元々、親不孝ものだった兄が暴走してしまった。<br />At this point, my brother, disobedient from the start, did something reckless.<br /><br />充を漫画家にする!文句あるか!<br />Brother: I’m making Mitsuru a mangaka! Got a problem!?<br /><br />安定した職業が一番と信じる両親をだまらせ、卒業後東京へ拉致ー<br />Adachi: He shut up my parents who believed secure work was best, and after I graduated, abducted me. It’s great! <br /><br />サンデーはうめず先生の「おろち」や、ジョージ秋山先生の「銭ゲバ」とか、<br />Takahashi: I would dreamily read works like Umezu’s ‘Orochi’, George Akiyama’s ‘Zeni Geba’,<br /><br />水島新司先生の「男どあほう甲子園」なんかを夢中で読んだ。<br />Or Mizushima Shinji’s ‘Otoko Doaho Koushien’ in the Sunday.<br /><br />そして、<br />And,<br /><br />石井いさみ先生の「くたばれ！涙くん｣<br />it would be a long time until I learned that Ishii Isami’s assistant<br />.<br />ーのアシスタントがあのあだち充少年だったと知るのは、ずっと後の話。<br />― was a boy named Adachi Mitsuru for ‘Kutabare! Of course I’m reading!<br /><br />やばいやばい。<br />Oh crap, oh crap.<br /><br />面接当日西蒲田の本屋さんで立ち読みしたのが、長い長いサンデーとのお付き合いの始まりー<br />Adachi: That day of the interview, I stood reading Sunday at a bookstore in Nishi Kamata. That was the start of my long, long relationship with Sunday―<br /><br />この時「少年サンデー」創刊10年目ー　昭和44年春のことであった。<br />At this time it was the 10th year of Shonen Sunday― the spring of Showa, 44.<br /><br />石井いさみ先生は当時、漫画界でも有名な二枚目で、当時、かっこよくスポーツカーを乗り回し、当時、蒲田の裕次郎と呼ばれー<br />Ishii Isami was at that time, even in the manga world, a famous, good looking man, and at that time drove around in a cool sports car, and at that time, was called the Yujiro of Kamata.<br /><br />当時当時　しつこいよ、あだちくん。<br />Ishii: At that time, at that time. (I’m really thankful)<br /><br />これがプロの仕事場。原稿キレイ。<br />Rumiko: So this is a pro’s workplace. I’ll eat meat.<br /><br />Page 26<br /><br />近況編<br />Title: The Recent Days Chapter<br /><br />「うる星やつら」の連載開始が78年、「タッチ」は81年。<br />Adachi: The first publication of Urusei Yatsura was in ’78, Touch was in ’81.<br /><br />―そして肉を食ったのが82年。<br />And it was in ’82 when we ate meat.<br /><br />今から27年前…<br />27 years ago…<br /><br />僕自身はその10年近く前にも何度かサンデーでチャンスをいただいていたのですが…<br />I myself was given several chances with Sunday about 10 years before that but,<br /><br />熱血漫画全盛期のボールの速さについていけず、すべて短期連載に終わっております。<br />not being able to follow the fast balls in the hot-blooded peak of manga, I ended with only short lasting series.<br /><br />ま、なんにしてもサンデーの歴史の半分以上に作品を発表していることになるのかぁ。<br />Well, in any case, I guess I’d been releasing pieces for over half of Sunday’s history.<br /><br />いやぁ　よく働いたなぁ　二人とも…<br />Boy  we sure worked hard  Both of us…<br /><br />何寝てんだよ。ネームは？<br />What you doing sleeping. Thanks to you, I’m somehow here today―<br /><br />―しかし高橋先生の場合はこの30年、「うる星やつら」「らんま1/2」｢犬夜叉｣とすべてサンデー史に残る大ホームラン。<br />―But for Takahashi, in these thirty years she’s had ‘Urusei Yatsura’, ‘Ranma 1/2’ and ‘Inuyasha’, all grand slams that’ll stay in Sunday’s history.<br /><br />こちらは数打ってのまぐれ狙い…<br />And here I hit the ball a several of times, hoping for a fluke…<br /><br />そんな生き方が許されたのもサンデーにどっしりとホームランバッターがいればこそ。もう一人の長距離バッター青山先生ともども感謝、感謝です。<br />The reason that my lifestyle was forgiven was only because Sunday is loaded with homerun batters.
