Kenta may have finally found a way to protect himself as Wingman even when injured, but having extra defense may end up being a downfall, particularly with a more powerful, fused Seedman still threatening to crush him at his school!

Chp. 17: Inside is Weakness; Help is Misunderstanding

170.
Kenta: Fly! Fly!! Uh, no! No good, I can’t fly!!
Kita Kura: Hold on! It wouldn’t be fun if we kill him at once! Strangle him bit by bit! Your bigness is making us cramped. Go outside and fight!!
Kenta: UUH…

171.
Kita Kura: Wingman, you will go outside too!
Kenta: Uuh…Uh!
Kenta: UWAAA!
Kenta: Uo!
Rodom: Guaa!
Kenta: Ha

172.
Kita Kura: Fufufu…I’ve done it.
Kita Kura: Now matter how many weird things you use, you can’t endured the power of the fused Rodom!
Aoi: Ken-boy…
Kita Kura: N!?

173.
Kenta: Gugu…
Kenta: S**t~~~!
Kita Kura: He’s not smashing him! Th…that stubborn guy…
Kenta: Damn: with Guarder’s weight, I can’t avoid attacks well…At this rate, if I take several more of his punches, I’ll be crushed no matter how protected I am with Guarder! Though it will be the same even if I remove Guarder…
Kenta: A weakness. That guy should have a weakness somewhere! My only option is finding it!

174.
Kita Kura: Continue! Continue your attack, Rodom!! You should be able to crush him with a few more of your punches!!
Kita Kura: Kill him!
Aoi: At this rate, Ken-boy will truly be defeated.
Aoi: N
Aoi: My strength’s restored!
Aoi: Ei!
Kita Kura: Mu!?
Kita Kura: Ho…hold on you!

175.
Kita Kura: Oh!
Kita Kura: Kuu…her strength is restored…
Kita Kura: Oh well. At any rate, I did plan to kill her. It’s better that Rodom will smash her with Wingman.
Aoi: It’s hard to fight in this outfit!

176.
Aoi: I’m fighting too, Ken-boy!!
Kenta: Uga!
Kenta: No, Aoi-san! Don’t come here!!
Aoi: I don’t care!
Aoi: Well I have my Dimension Power as a weapon!

177.
Aoi: Huh…It seems it really doesn’t affect him…
Aoi: Wh…what’s that sound?
Aoi: Ha, no! The Podreal Space has returned to normal!

178.
Kita Kura: Chi, this is Aoi’s power. She can’t create Podreal Space for a long time! I have to disappear before they all wake up.
Aoi: Everyone’s waking up. We can’t let them see this!
Kenta: Watch out, Aoi-san!
Aoi: Eh!?

179.
Aoi: Ha!
Aoi: This is good.
Aoi: THERE
Rodom: !

180.
Rodom: GYAA
Aoi: Kya
Kenta: Aoi-san!
Aoi: I…I’m fine! So then, he’s got a thick skin outside, but he’s fragile on the inside!!
Kenta: The inside
Kenta: Now you mention…Right there at the weakest point of his skin is his weakness!?

181.
Matsuoka: Nn…
Matsuoka: N---?
Matsuoka: What am I doing here…
Voice: Uwa, what’s that!?
Boy: There.
Everyone: What’s that monster? Who made that!?

182.
Matsuoka: I’ve…got it!! The one who made that monster doll and is playing make-believe with it can only be Hirono-kun!
Boy 1: Hey, Hirono is facing a make-believe monster in the school.
Boy 2: He did it, he destroyed class again!
Boy 3: Even so, why are we here?
Boy 4: Teacher, it’s terrible. There’s chaos within the school!
Matsuoka: Wh…what, that’s Hirono-kun’s doing too!
Kiyomi: Miku, wake up Miku.
Miku: N—
Miku: !
Miku: Kyaa!
Kiyomi: ?
Kiyomi: What, you’re scared of my face?
Miku: Ah.
Miku: You’ve returned to normal. You can do it~~(Great—Hahaha…)
Kenta: Wh…what…?
Aoi: No, everyone’s woken up.
Matsuoka: HIRONO-KUN!
Kenta: Eh!?

184.
Kenta: Teacher!
Kenta: Watch out, don’t come here! Teacher---!!
Matsuoka: Wh—at are you doing? I’m always worried about you. Playtime is over.
Kenta: Too late!
Rodom: ?
Matsuoka: It isn’t “too late”!
Matsuoka: You’ll get it no matter how many times it takes! Stop your childish play already…
Kenta: !

185.
Rodom: GUOOO!
Matsuoka: Kya
Kenta: Get away, teacher!
Kenta: I can only hit him over there anymore!
Kenta: URYAAAA!

186.
Rodom: Gugugu…
Kenta: Wawa, I can’t turn back to normal!
Students: Great—Hirono—that was the most fun—
Voice: Hirono-kun…

187.
Matsuoka: I’ll remember this for your permanent record!
Aoi: Great…Everyone greatly misunderstands: we’ve won against the enemy and everyone has survived…
Students:
But Hirono-kun’s really done it.
What a blockhead.
Great—Hirono! You’re honest, hahahaha!
Aoi-chan is so cute.
We should get to know her.
Hey, isn’t shoe embarrassed…
So bouncy
Aoi: It’s really great…right, Ken-boy?
Miku: Hirono-kun…if all of this until now has been a plot by Hirono-kun…thoug I have these scared eyes…Then Hirono-kun is actually…if he is, then I…
(End of Volume 2)

188.
PODREAMS NEWS
*This page is where all of you on board with us send your pages to Katsura-sen----sei!

Q: I’m a 100% big fan of Wingman and Msakazu Katsura-sensei. Sensei, please tell me your profile and your debut work.
A: I was born December 10th, 1962 (Showa 37) in Fukui. Blood Type is A, Height is 170 cm, weight 54 kg, eyesight is 1.5 in both eyes (I think…).
My hobby is sleeping recently. That’s enough for my profile. My debut work is a manga called “Tenkousei wa Hensousei!?” (The Transfer Student is Masquerading!?”

Q: Um, I have a question immediately but, “Hirono” is, perhaps, has the meaning of “a hero”?
A: Ah, you understood well. But of course. From the start, I decided his name would be Kenta and, at any rate, he’s a hero, I made him “Hirono Kenta” since it’s “Hero no Kenta”.
(TN: I guess this is better understood in Japanese than it is in English. The Japanese way to say “Kenta the hero” is “Hiiroo no Kenta”, thus why Katsura made his name “Hirono Kenta”. (or Kenta Hirono in English order))

Q: I’ve rea—lly loved reading chp. 1 of Wingman. Hirono-kun is good. What’s escaped a bit is he has an incredible affinity. I feel that his “cute” is greater than his “cool”.
A: The affinity he holds (TBC)

189.
is verry good…actually there is no meaning to that.

Q: Katsura-sensei, I’ve fallen in love with Kenta-kun. It’s because he’s an ally of justice and it’s not that he’s cool but while it may confront Miku-chan, I love Kenta-kun’s behavior. My intention is to make Miku-chan envious!! I’ll protect you, Kenta-kun. Is it fine to send Kenta-kun and Miku-chan something to dress up with?
A: It’s fine!

Q: I’ve thought up a theme song for “School Sentai Seigiman”.
1.
Reading the quaking hearts.
Being the friends with the wind.
Searching for evil in the east and west.
Granting dreams in the north and south.
*
Courage and justice are our weapons
School Sentai Seigiman
Perusing love everywhere.
2.
Reading the uneasy body
Going to become the light
Defeating evil in the east and west
Granting love in the north and south.
Your vows are our weapons
School Sentai Seigiman
Persuing peace everywhere.
*Repeat this arc
A: Fufufu, another song. It’s cool that I’m getting a lot of these, can you make one for this corner? (School Sentai Seigiman will be introduced next time in volume 3!!)

Q: Please make Ken-boy’s hairstyle this time in the style of Masahiko Kondou.
(TN: Masahiko Kondou, or “Matchy”, is known originally as an idol singer in the early-mid 80s, but since have become just as well known racer in Japanese car racing and even competing several times at Le Mans. Though he never gave up singing, recently doing an ending to the Naruto Shippuden ending (“Mezameyou Yasee” with Question?) in 2008)
A: U—m, scary!! I’ll do it this time.
*Go ahead to send your news and fan letters to Podreams News.

TN: It's sort of lucky that Kenta is already infamous with his sentai obsession, considering that he can get away with being a real Wingman without drawing any attention aside from his "destroying class" routine that the school is already used to by this point. Though in a weird way, I found it hilarious that Matsuoka is more powerful in some ways than one of Kita Kura's Seedmen...guess when she's on a rant, you can't stop her! Also find it refreshing that Aoi is starting to help out a bit more in these fights instead of always being a DOD...but of course since she's not the guy with the Dream Note, it's not like she can increase her own power to face Rimel's forces or just Kita Kura for long! See you in vol. 3!

Continue from the Chaing pose
2.	With heart, open your arms like the drawing
3.	Quickly close your hands. While doing so, turn your body around.
4.	Steadily, while looking behind, quickly open both arms.
5.	Move your arms like in the drawing.
6.	While doing so, turn your body to the front.
7.	As your body is moving to the front, turn like the drawing.
8.	(see above)
9.	Exactly like 5., place your body in reverse.
10.	When your body is completely in front, set up your right hand to wave intensely like this drawing. This is “AKU!”
11.	Turn your right arm once like the drawing.
12.	Once more, like you’re turning your right arm, move down your body with your face facing front.
13.	Like the drawing, place your hands on top of each other.
14.	Firmly set your arms to open up. This is “Saku!”
15.	Raise your left leg and set your right hand as a wild eagle like the drawing.
16.	(see above)
17.	Turn both hands like such and largely step your left leg.
18.	Posing your hands quickly, open your chest and conclude it!! This is “Wingman!”

TN: Somehow I feel sorry for Kenta for putting up with this mess every time he wants to relax, but I guess that's the plot of a story like this. That and Miku just seems to never have a break...when your best friend turns into a monster like everyone else, you know something is wrong!

Sometimes the flow feels weird in that it starts with the end of the fight with Shaft's Seedman, but then starts with Kita Kura infecting the whole school (aside from Miku) with another problem. It is interesting to see that Aoi is treating the problems with severity obviously...though it is weird to see Miku always worrying about Kenta no matter what he pulls. (though I feel sorry for Kiyomi, the spunky but troublesome one...)

But if I don’t use it, everyone will get hurt!!
Kenta: It’s the only way!
Kenta: TAKE THIS! DRIVER RAID!!

TN: There really hasn't been that much to say about this series as of late...it's still fun, but the chapters are just so easy to do and I sort of want to see the dialogue and pictures match up with it. Though somehow it was neat to see Winarudo for the first time...though somehow I sort of wonder how long Kenta needs to recharge after a fight considering how quickly he went from Kita Kura to Shaft.

We were running together for just one day!
Aoi: The jogging is for you, Ken-boy…this isn’t for me.
Kenta: That’s it already. What about my “promise to protect justice”? Re—ally.

32.
Aoi: I get it. How about we go jogging?
Kenta: I’ve already gone jogging. It’s school, we have to go to school!
Aoi: School~~then I’ll go back to sleep.
Kenta: Hey! You’ve already become a student. You can’t play hooky! I’ll rip him to pieces later…
Boy 1: Teacher, you shouldn’t have told Hirono to quit his “Ally of Justice” make-believe.
Matsuoka: Why?
Boy 2: Because he thinks he’s not an ally of justice, he’s slow to get to class.
Boy 1: Right, right.
Boy 1: It seems until now that since he thought he was an ally of justice, he would think to he can’t be bad and that he couldn’t be late.
Matsuoka: No no, I’m on to your scheme. If Hirono-kun starts his ally of justice make-believe again, class will be destroyed—

37.
Matsuoka: Well, right?
Boy: I’ve…been exposed?
Boy 2: Even so, it’s bizarre that Hirono is late…
Boy 2: Making matters worse, Aoi-chan is too.
Boy 2: I’m really worried…
Boy 2: N?
Boy 2: !?
Aoi: Ah—I’m hungry…
Boy 2: Shshsh unexpectedly.

38.
Kenta: HAA HAA
Kenta: I’m really~~~late~~
Matsuoka: We—ll, finally, this would benefit the boys.
Matsuoka: Know that you shouldn’t peep with lewd eyes at the rhythm gymnastics practice!
Matsuoka: Understand, Bijumaru-kun!
Bijumaru: Huh~~Why me?
Boy: You’re the only one doing it.

39.
Matsuoka: Well then, that’s all.
Matsuoka: Sta—nd. Bow!
Kenta: HAA HAA
Kenta: Ow…
Matsuoka: Come with me for a moment.
Miku: Good. Hirono-kun wasn’t with those lewd peeping boys this morning…

40.
Kenta: Really.
Kenta: Weren’t you
Kenta: Coming with early this mo--rning
Aoi: What?
Boy 1: You rea—lly weren’t there?
Kenta: Well.
Boy 2: If you came early, did you see those rhythm gymnastics leotards—
Kenta: ?
Kenta: What? Rhythm gymnastics?
Boy 1: Yo…you don’t know of rhythm gymnastics!?

41.
Kenta: No—
Boy: Really? They’re people who do things like that Goggle V you like…
Kenta: HUH~~!
Kenta: They’re the same as heroes!
(TN: A bit of connection for our sake: the sentai heroes of the 1982-1983 series “Dai Sentai Goggle V” all had rhythm gymnastic equipment as weapons)
Kenta: Oh! If they’re the same as heroes, then if I practically watch and do what they do, then that will be extremely helpful in strengthening Wingman!!
Kenta: I want to see! I want to see!! Whatever I take, I will see it, hey!!!
Boy: Uwawawawa!
Boy: Yo yo you rea—ly know if you ask Miku-chan.

42.
Kenta: Um, uh Miku-cha…No, Ogawa-san.
Miku: Ah, Hirono-kun.
Kenta: I have a little something I want to ask but…
Miku: What?
Kenta: Where is the Rhythm Gymnastics club?
Miku: ………You want to see them?
Kenta: Yes, I really do.

43.
Kenta: Ah, Miku-cha…
Kenta: What?
Kiyomi: Pervert.
Kenta: N!?
Kiyomi: Hirono-kun is surprisingly dirty.
Kenta: What’s that? It’s because I don’t know what rhythm gymnastics is and I just want to see it.
Kiyomi: Eh~~really~~?
Kenta: Really!
Kiyomi: Really? --Well…

44.
Kiyomi: If you want to know, then go to the gymnastics club’s personal gym after school.
Kenta: Why are you coming with?
Aoi: This seems interesting—Why?
Kenta: Well, opening.
Kenta: Fuu…
Kenta: N
Voice: GO HOME!!

TN: Well the relations between Kenta and Miku have started to go downwards...again. Of course, it's not her fault that the main reason he's trying to attend a rhythm gymnastics club has less to do with being a pervert...and more to do with his sentai obsessions. Considering I know little to nothing about many of the sentai out there, I sort of didn't realize that Goggle V used rhythm gymnastic weapons (therefore connecting it, obviously, to Kenta's obsessions) I sort of wished we got a bit more Miku aside from the really cute intro and the ending...but I guess it was more setup to show how screwed up Kenta has it, both in his day-to-day and his relations to Aoi.

Even if I power up my strength, I can’t control it.
Kenta: Ho…how did you know that…it can’t be!
Aoi: Yes.
Aoi: I threw you from the roof and attacked you on the way home. It was to test Ken-boy’s power.

21.
Kenta: Ri—ght, understood. You really are an alien…no, a being from another dimension who has come to invade Earth.
Aoi: What are you saying?
Kenta: You’ve been acting to everyone until now!
Aoi: Don’t joke! My father may be dead now. Ken-boy doesn’t know anything.
Kenta: That’s probably an act too!!

22.
Aoi: What, did you want to yell that! How dare you claim that you’re invincible!
Aoi: Even if you power your strength up, it means nothing if your body can’t endure the recoil! I’m worried that you’re happy in just having the appearance of an ally of justice. This isn’t playtime!!
Kenta: Sorry.
Kenta: I’m sorry you doubt me…An ally of justice can’t doubt people.
Aoi: It’s…good you understand but.

23.
Aoi: --In any case, Ken-boy won’t become much stronger. I’m worried.
Aoi: I gave you the Dream Note because you promised to protect justice. Not even Ken-boy can become an invincible hero, all because of me.
Kenta: Calm down. I can write in the Dream Note to power up my strength, thus I can write for my body to cope with it.
Aoi: …………………That’s naïve.
Aoi: The person known as Kenta Hirono can’t change into another person. Since the foundation is Ken-boy’s own body, the recoil will come back to you somewhere no matter how much you power up.
Kenta: So, what can I do?

24.
Aoi: THERE’S ONLY ONE ANSWER. YOU YOURSELF WILL HAVE TO POWER UP…
Kenta: HAA HAA
Kenta: --FROM THE NEXT DAY, I GOT UP EARLY AND DECIDED TO JOG BEFORE I GO TO SCHOOL. (out loud): Haa haa
Kenta: IN ADDITION, I DID JUMP ROPES, PUSH-UPS, ETC…TO BUILD STRENGTH.

25.
Kenta: I’LL BECOME A TRUE INVINCIBLE HERO (Wingman) FROM NOW ON! (out loud) HAA HAA
Kenta: --HOWEVER, THERE HAD TO BE A RECOIL SOMEWHERE FOR WHAT I DIDN’T DO…
Voice: Hirono!
Kenta: N?
Kenta: Ye…yes.
Teacher: Is it good for allies of justice to doze during class—
Kenta: So…sorry. (internal) ~~That’s why I really, really haven’t become an ally of justice yet—

TN: Is it just me or did this chapter for some reason remind me a bit in concept of something like "The Greatest American Hero"? Sure the whole concept of Wingman was, but just the whole idea of Kenta being able to "write up" that he has super-speed...but not being able to handle it was just reminiscent of the whole idea. The chapter brings up an interesting concept that sort of allows for Kenta from being super-uber so easily: the limits of the power he can create via the Dream Note is based on his own ability for his body to take it. If he could instantly use any of the powers that he creates, he'd probably be too uber from the start, therefore allowing him to have no problems in facing down any of his enemies. Though one more major note for the chapter: cast a suspicious eye for the "man" who found Kenta after his running spree...mostly cause Aoi has too.

I tried to keep the joke by having her say that “she dreamed her name was…”, therefore coming up with the Japanese word “yume”…but it really probably doesn’t work as well.)
Matsuoka: Where’s your seat? How long does it take to make one chapter. 2. There’s something written on Katsura-sensei’s back. Is that an assistant? 3. How many assistants do you have? 4. Do your assistants live with you or do they commute? 5. Are you going out with a woman?
A: 1. Usually 4~5 days! 2. I do have assistants currently! 3. Three of them! 4. They commute! 5. I don’t have one. (Complaining of that!)

Q: What sort of face is Aoi-san’s real face? And will she show this face to the other characters?
A: It’s a secret. But, if you want to know why, then buy another volume. (But I’m warning you that this is the situation where I don’t know how many to buy).

Q: Aah! Aoi-san’s panties were destroyed!! It’s slightly sexy! Hey! If I were Masakazu-sensei, do I research for someone’s butt!? (Refer to pg. 102 of this volume)
A: Let me answer this seriously. When I was previously in design school, I firmly made nude sketches. In short, (TBC)

193.
(Cont) you study and research butts. Therefore, even if I’m a lecher and a pervert, I’m not a molester.

Q: I’ve been collecting “Wingman” colors and have bought three copies of “Weekly Shonen Jump”. I had cut out the color pages in one issue, wrap it in Saran Wrap and happily place it on my desk. Whenever I look at it, it wills me with “I will study”!! Fufufu…how’s that? My “Wingman Preservation Method”--?
A: Per, perhaps you’re the president, aren’t you!? Remarkable!! With this, my drawings will keep their freshness forever.

Q: I’ve thought up a main theme song when Wingman is decided to be turned into a TV show:
Chaing! Wingman
The time to stand is now
Firmly on the earth
The time to fly is now
Basking in the sun
These are the dreams
To when you keep searching within the ehart
Attempt this with
Your love and your courage.
Chaing! Scream to the great land
Chaing! Scream to the great sky
Black Sensation Wingman
How’s that? Any thoughts?
A: It’s good. If I were greedy, I’d want a 2nd too. Can anyone write a tune to this?

Q: I’ve written a hero manga too. A “Gavan” parody called “Space Detective Gapan”. This is Gapan. Isn’t he really cool?
A: Mumumu…I can’t say.

*Thanks for the earlier fanletters for Podream News.

TN: Yeah I probably shouldn't have done the "author commentary" at the end of the volume but...that's how I get sometimes. So what can I really say about this chapter? Well for one thing, Katsura did a nice job in using a more generic title and finding ways that allow for several characters to get suspicious of various things here and there. We have Kenta suspicious that a Podreams assassin is finally after him, we have Aoi suspicious on the true effect of her powers in the 3-D world, we have Matsuoka suspicious of Aoi's even existence when she wasn't even in this class yesterday, and we have Miku suspicious...in Kenta and Aoi's relationship! It is right: the two just really interacted for the first time the other day and now she's getting jealous...you could say it's fast but in time terms, this is the 8th chapter, meaning two months have probably passed in the real world and people were probably waiting for something like this to happen by now. My only worry: the more I see Miku, the more I see her like Hinata...it's hard for me to see her the same again, but of course everyone knows of Hinata and probably won't want to hear a thing about how some girl from a manga over 25 years old did this first. (well probably many others but in particular) Well with the volume over and done with, I'm moving on to start something else, but more Wingman is coming soon...hopefully.

BTW: Don't really know about that "theme song" that person wrote in the letter sections...but if anyone wants a copy of "Ijigen Story", the REAL anime theme song, just ask.

Gaining the power to become Wingman like he wanted is one thing...but it's bad enough that now Kenta has to have Aoi move in with him due to this! But unfortunately, that's not even the worst that could happen...not in his dreams!

Chp. 7: Nightmare

149.
Kenta: That author plays around quite a bit.
(TN: I’ve made quite a few comments on various tokusatsu heroes before this and here we have a couple “girl forms” for two. Gavan I’ve gone over before, but the other one is Kamen Rider ZX, the 10th Rider who, actually, only appeared in a TV special in January, 1984. (Not sure why she’s here though since this is still early in 1983)

150.
Kenta: --I’ve become Wingman, a true ally of justice…yes, now everyone will be completely surprised.
Kenta: Hey, listen up everyone! I can really transform into Wingman!!

151.
Kenta: No one believes me. Once more…
Kenta: No! Hold on: a transforming hero shouldn’t reveal his true form to everyone!!
Kenta: Sorry, sorry, I was just joking, don’t mind me.
Kenta: It’s best for an ally of justice to not let strangers know their true identity…
Kenta: But…I want to tell just Miku-chan. I want to show her my coolness.

152.
Miku: Hmph.
Kenta: Wh…what’s with that attitude? The misunderstanding should be cleared up…th…this is…
Kenta: I, I should be frank with my feelings…
Kenta: Mi…Miku-cha…ah, no, Ogawa-san, I…I…I…
Kenta: I LOVE YOU!

153.
Miku: Indecent people like Hirono-kun I rea~~lly hate!!
Boy 1: Ye—s, ye—s, you’re indecent!
Boy 2: Lecher!
Matsuoka: This is going in your record!
Kenta: Wh…what???
Kenta: N
Kenta: GEEEE!
Aoi: Ehe.

154.
Kenta: Uwaaaa!
Kenta: !!
Kenta: Uwa! Uwa!! Uwa!!!
Kenta: Wagyaaa

155.
Aoi: Nn~~what? You’re so noisy~
Kenta: Wh wh what are you doing sleeping in midair~~!!
Aoi: Huh, something strange about that?

156.
Aoi: This is ordinary in Podreams…
Kenta: Ah~I thought my heart exploded. Haa haa
Kenta: Use the futon!
Aoi: I floated spontaneously.
Kenta: Ca…can we live together with these different living environments?
Narrator: --One question hasn’t been asked here…this is about language—
Narrator: Though Kenta isn’t a very smart kid, he’s able to talk without concern to Aoi without realizing it…Japanese and Podreamese aren’t the same—
(TN: Language identification in Japanese is much easier with the addition of “-go” to the end of the name of a country. English doesn’t really have that identification unless you use something silly like “-ese” or “-ish”, so I went with the former…though it could also just be the language is called “Podreams” or “the language of Podreams”)
Narrator: SO THEN, WHY CAN THEY TALK TO EACH OTHER…!
Narrator: --Because it’s a manga………well that’s a joke; the answer is that there’s a peculiar ability possessed by people of Podreams that they are understood in the language used by the other when they transmit their language into the other’s brain, even when they’re speaking Podreamese! Similarly, their partner’s language is understood as Podreamese by them.
“Kenta”: What!
“Aoi”: Blockhead.

157.
Kenta: Morning…
Aoi: Good morn~~ing.
Mr. Hirono: What’s wrong, Kenta, didn’t you sleep well last night? You look blue.
Kenta: I became blue after that dream that I had…
Aoi: What, what was the dream?
Kenta: Huh, the dream?
Aoi: Yep.
Kenta: It, it was nothing…
Aoi: ?
Kenta: Well, thanks……for the fo~~od.
Aoi: …………

158.
Aoi: Hey.
Kenta: N?
Aoi: How do you use those?
Kenta: Fine, like this, like this…
Aoi: Right, right.
Mrs. Hirono: What’s that jarring sound below?
Kenta: N, no, it’s nothing.
Kenta: Really, you’re a lot of trouble.
Aoi: Hey, where are you going now?
Kenta: N, to school. School.
Aoi: Hm~~mm
Aoi: It would be fun to go too.

159.
Kenta: N, no! If you go to school without following entrance procedure, it will become outrageous.
Kenta: You don’t know about 3rd Dimension things, and you haven’t seen a middle school!
Kenta: Therefore, Aoi-san, you’re taking care of the house. Understand?
Kenta: N?
Kenta: !
Aoi: Come home soon…

160.
Kenta: I’m leav~~ing.
Kenta: Ah~~that was surprising…she suddenly embraced me…
Boy: Morning, Hirono.
Kenta: Hey.
Boy: Why are you so happy?
Kenta: Just a—m.
Boy: I thought you’d be disappointed your Wingman outfit was taken.
Kenta: I wasn’t on—that.

161.
Caption: --Chuugaku Middle School—
Kenta: Mornin’—
Student: Morning—
Kenta: Ah.
Kenta: Mo, morning—Miku-cha…ah, no, Ogawa-san.
Miku: Ah, morning—
“Girl”: Huh, You greet Miku but not us? Hirono-kun!
Kenta: Ah—ah—good—morn—ing.
Kenta: Ah—good. What would I have thought if she had the same attitude as my dream.

162.
“Girl”: Ah—actually, Hirono-kun, she’s in the infirmary.
Kenta: Who?
“Girl”: Your cousin. Hirono-kun’s cousin. Aoi-san.
Kenta: Huh?
Kenta: HUH?
Kenta: HUUH~~~!

163.
Kenta: What does that mean? My cousin A-o-i is that Aoi-san…
Sign: Don’t run in the hall!
Kenta: Ha.
Kenta: Allies of justice don’t run in halls.
Kenta: What am I doing…I’ll know when I get to the infirmary.
Sign: INFIRMARY
Kenta: We~~ll.

164.
Aoi: HI—I
Nurse: Ah, Hirono-kun. This girl is fine. She just had some minor anemia.
Nurse: She can go to her first period class.
Aoi: Hehe, I used too much Dimension Power.

165.
Kenta: Why does everyone know you?
Aoi: Well, remember when I embraced you this morning, Ken-boy?
(TN: Aoi calls Kenta “Ken-bou”, using the “Ken” in “Kenta” and the “bou” which is Japanese for “boy”)
Kenta: Ke…Ken-boy?
Aoi: When I did, I separated out knowledge on the 3rd Dimension from you.
Aoi: And with that, together I selected out from your knowledge people who were connected to you…
Kenta: So just like what you did to my parents, you’ve implanted your existence subconsciously to all of them.
Aoi: Right, you’re smart on those things~~
Kenta: …………
Kenta: This ca—n’t be, the others don’t have a reason to know of y—ou.
Aoi: Ah, teacher, have I become better?
Nurse: Yes.
Nurse: So then, take care of yourself.
Aoi: Right.
Kenta: Thanks.

166.
Kenta: While we’re at it, why did you come to school?
Aoi: Ken-boy, you brought the Dream Note to school.
Kenta: Well then, it is my important treasure.
Aoi: I’ve come to not have faith in you.
Aoi: You said you were invincible and you were hurt. There’s nothing I can do in my promise of giving you the notebook, but
Aoi: As long as Ken-boy has the notebook, I have to watch you so you don’t use it for weird things or anything.
Kenta: O—oh, I give up…
Aoi: Ah, hold on a moment.
Kenta: Why?
Aoi: Need a bathroom.

167.
Kenta: People of other dimensions need bathrooms…
Kenta: While we’re at it, you came to school as you pleased.
Sign: Boys
Kenta: It’s fine that nothing has happened but…
Boys: WAAA!
Sign: BOYS
Kenta: Ge
Kenta: She a blockhead!? She went into the boy’s room!!
Aoi: Wh, what?
Kenta: …………

168.
Kenta: YOU BLOCKHEAD! What were you doing as a girl entering a boy’s----room!!
Aoi: I was just following the action pattern from Ken-boy’s knowledge.
Kenta: Girls should know to go with the girls.
Kenta: Hm—mm.
Kenta: Aah…I’ll sympathize for earlier…
Aoi: I don’t know how to us—e it, teach me.

169.
Kenta: How can I teach you that? Use it how you like, how you like!!
Aoi: Hya
Kenta: Ah~~
Kenta: Huh, hold on.
Kenta: If she obtained knowledge from me, then why would this girl ask whether to use a boy’s room or a girl’s room? And how to use it? A girl should already know how…then…
Kenta: She’s making fun of me~~!
Aoi: You’ve got it.

170.
Narrator: First period passed peacefully and it was break time—
Kenta: A~ah.
Kenta: A nightmare…
Kenta: Thinking of being with her like earlier from now on…I’d want to die…

171.
Kenta: WHA!
Kenta: UWAAAA

TN: Let me admit to this: after the last couple of chapters going from action and angst to romance and angst...we get a really fun chapter this time around! Everything starting from Kenta's bizarre nightmare (well it's not like he's seen Aoi naked yet so how he could have her like that at school is beyond belief but funny as heck) to Aoi magically joining his class using more "Dimension Power manipulation" was fun stuff. And that's not even getting into the whole bathroom bit...then again, how do beings from other worlds go to the bathroom anyway, they never explain it in any manga prior to now! (though let's say it's one thing no one wants to think about) Of course the main kicker was the "explanation" regarding "how Aoi can speak to people in this world"...yeah, I still think the real reason is "this is a manga" like before but of course that's too easy. But it does make one think: with the hundreds of manga out there where all the characters from around the world and around the universe instantly know how to speak Japanese (like all the characters from around the world/universe know how to speak English in American comics), most of them never seem to explain why. I'm really happy that Katsura did at least attempt to do it...well in a comedic way.

Kenta begins special training to power up Wingman, but………
The school’s in danger!!
Hurry, Hirono! Fight, Kenta!!
Chaing, Evil Cleaver Wingman!!!
(TN: I really wish I could make it work, but the expression that Wingman uses (starting in vol. 2) when he declares his arrival is “Aku! Saku! Wingman!” It’s really hard to find word that rhyme using the two kanji, so thus I had to go with “evil” for the first one and the only way it would work was with “cleaver” for the second…so if anyone has any idea, I’ll take them)
--Next Volume: THE ASSASSIN—See you then!

TN: This was a unique and interesting chapter...one that had to take weird steps but I'll get to that. The true purpose of the chapter was obviously the "alternate perspectives" story that we got regarding Kenta's return home, Miku getting her bag back...and how Aoi nearly ruined everything again! It's probably standard stuff in romance series (at least more comedic ones) to have some strange situation get way out of control leading to a horrible misunderstanding and some sort of violence befalling the male lead. And I have to say, even this early going Katsura sort of shows sympathy for both Kenta and Miku, allowing for us to see both their perspectives instead of just having one perspective, tragedy/violence, and then things get worse somehow or another. You do feel sorry for Aoi that she lost her father in the first battle and that it lead to all of this, but somehow she does make everyone's lives more screwy than helpful. And as for "brainwashing everyone to make them think she's Kenta's cousin"...somehow I wouldn't be surprised if Sailor Moon took that concept too. (it's old standard in manga/anime I guess, a bit weird since they really can't explain what "Dimension Power" is and how Aoi is able to get away with all this, but suffice even if cliche) Oh, and one more thing: the more I see Miku, the more I see Hinata...nuff said.

If you write that, then throw it here so I’ll draw it, hurry!
Aoi: Here!

121.
Kita Kura: I’ll kill you.

122.
Kita Kura: A~~ah.
Kenta: It’s not flexible.
Kita Kura: UAAA

123.
Kenta: S**t, the Chrome Labor didn’t work!
Kenta: So, next will be the Sprict Fla...
Aoi: This isn’t the time to think up weapons.
Kenta: Ow.
Aoi: Run away. We’ll be defeated here.
Kenta: But it’s rare we get the chance…
Aoi: Enough. Winner!
Aoi: Now, hurry!
Kenta: Ho, hold on.
Kenta: Enough! We have to do something here—
Kita Kura: Ku…
Kita Kura: ARE YOU ESCAPING!!

124.
Kenta: N!?
Kenta: WATCH OUT~~!!
Aoi: Ah.
Aoi: Father!?
Aoi: !?

125.
Aoi: Hold on!
Raak: It’s…it’s too late for me…
Raak: Hold on to my memories.
Raak: Aah…go, you’ll be defeated here, go!
Kita Kura: Give me the Dream Note!!
Aoi: Fa…ther…
Aoi: I’m sorry.
Raak: G…Go……

TN: Last night was hectic so I got the chapter out now. (had to do too much stuff and my priorities are screwed up.) Now as for the chapter itself...in a way it was both a fun and a slightly frustrating thing. On one hand, it was really fun seeing Kenta not just become Wingman but to attempt to use his "powers", only to find out that when you write something in the Dream Note...that's it, you only become what you write in the Dream Note, nothing more. Made it a really interesting encounter with Kita Kura, but at the same time it lead to a funny but a bit contrieved fight in keeping the Dream Note away while Aoi creates his first weapon for him. (though regarding that: I thought it was funny he had to write on the fly and that it broke on first use, but I had a hard time getting the name thinking there is a "Labor" that means sword in another language...and it felt a tad weird that it was Aoi writing it on the fly, not Kenta) Obviously Rimel's forces (including Kita Kura) weren't going down this time, but it was sad to see Raak, Aoi's father, bite it so early...but hey, at least it guarantees they'll be busy when they get back to Podreams.

(except it's fake) I know it's weird I did an extra chapter but these chapters actually aren't as much of a hassle compared to a bunch of other series. I really like this chapter, though, in allowing for a reversal of fortunes between Kenta and Aoi. In the previous chapter, Aoi was the stranger in a strange land completely confused and happy that she had gotten away with the Dream Note and learning about Kenta's "sentai heroes" via Wingman. But here, Kenta is starting to learn about Podreams and it's society, thinking that it is somewhat a game and that it's easier than it will turn out to be. Even seeing him getting excited in being captured by Rimel's forces and going through the motions was funny. The first battles here, with Aoi fighting against the bug monsters were a bit hard to follow, but I guess when you deal with Dimension Power it sort of feels hard to figure out what the rules are. But hey, with Wingman about to be unleashed next time, it's time for Kenta to show what he's made of...if he's written enough in the notebook to make it matter!

If I use it for other things, then there won’t be pages for it.
“Girl”: No other choice since I did promise…
Kenta: Well—then, I’ll write immediately…
Kenta: First I’ll create “Winner”; Wingman’s all-purpose airbike!
(TN: The “reading” for “Winner” is “Uinnaa”, which actually comes to “Wiener”…but I doubt anyone wants an airbike named after a hot dog…or a dachshund)
Kenta: “Winner will appear immediately anywhere when it’s called”.

80.
Kenta: Abilities…will be “It can go on land, underwater and even the air”. “And it’s also possible that it can come and go between other dimensions…”
“Girl”: You’re so unkind!
Kenta: Ui~~!
Kenta: Hahahaha…
“Girl”: Ah.
Kenta: WINNER!!

81.
Kenta: It’s here, it actually appeared!
“Girl”: Ho—
Kenta: Let’s go--!
Kenta: GO!

TN: You have to admire the weird partnership growing between "the mysterious female from another dimension" and Kenta even at this point. The good news is that Kenta can use his Dream Note to become Wingman and disperse his own concepts of heroism. But on the other hand, he can only have the Dream Note and be Wingman...if he can be Wingman to save "her" homeworld! It makes sense in some ways (see the next chapter why), but it just was fun seeing moments like "her" literally flying them out of Kenta's room and making things worse and worse (one balloon...like that would support him) until...well, it popped and he had no choice. Unfortunately this really isn't helping his relationship with Miku at all: instead of a budding romance, he gets thrown into weird perverted situations he never wanted to get himself thrown into and she suffers. Oh and one more thing: don't you wish you had a bike like Winner? Now that would be awesome!

It will burn inside a fire…
“Girl”: That may be obvious to all of you but
“Girl”: Podreams doesn’t have this “fire”, and nothing can annihilate this notebook except that.
Kenta: …………H~~mm.
Kenta: You can’t have it at all!
“Girl”: Kya

55.
Kenta: Wawawa!!!
“Girl”: Don’t forget about this Dimension Power!
Kenta: Oww.
Kenta: But--!
“Girl”: What.
Kenta: She’s really easy on the eyes…No; I’m wrong, poison to the eyes.
(TN: This is a language pun made by Kenta: the first thing he says about his staring is “Me no Toku”, with “me” as “eyes” and “toku” as “interest” or “profit”…and it’s obvious why. But then, Kenta switches “toku” to “doku”, which is Japanese for “poison”)

56.
Kenta: But…well, if you’re throwing it out, then its better if I use it.
Kenta: If you do, then I can bring world peace. That can allow for a bright future.
“Girl”: So then, how can you bring peace by just transforming?
Kenta: Wingman is an ally of justice; a modern angel.
“Girl”: An-Al-Ly-Of-Jus-Tice?
(TN: “She” answers Kenta in Katakana; I tried to emphasize it by breaking it up into syllables)
Kenta: Right, an ally of justice, one who wishes for peace for humanity)

57.
Miku: It’s here.
Sign: Hirono
Miku: I’m surprised, Hirono-kun……If a girl who shouldn’t know this house suddenly asked…
Miku: Somehow it’s become embarrassing…
Miku: What do I do? Should I go home having gotten to his gate~~but…
Woman: Ah, do you have some business with us?
Miku: Yes.
Miku: Eh…eeh, with Hirono-kun…

58.
“Girl”: Well, is this “ally of justice” that amazing?
Kenta: Aah, he’s invincible. He can even leap tall buildings in a single bound.
“Girl”: Hm—mm
Kenta: Wh, what?
“Girl”: This may be good…I don’t know what sort of power this “Wingman” possessed, but, if I use him well, then this may be better than annihilating the Dream Note.
Kenta: Understand! Thus I’ll!
Kenta: N—
“Girl”: Fufu…

59.
“Girl”: Understood. I’ll give you the Dream Note.
Mrs. Hirono: Kenta—a visitor…
Mrs. Hirono & Miku: !?

60.
THE SECRET OF THE BIRTH OF WINGMAN
This is the very first Wingman. When I was in 11th Grade, I created Wingman. This design used a work called “Tsubasa”, which took the “Good Work” Tezuka Award. Thus, Wingman has been kept around for 5 years, somehow or another.

Caption: Not Consistent.

Caption: Protagonist: First Design

And this is how it came. His name was “Tsubasa” and he was an android. Somehow he resembles Kenta.
(TN: A bit of time discrepancy: “Tsubasa”, the one shot that “introduced” Wingman, actually won the “Good Work” Tezuka Award (the lowest of the three levels for the award that, at that time, was lead by Osamu Tezuka in judging) for the first half of 1980. Since Wingman began in ’83, then the designs from “Tsubasa” were originally formed in ’78, which was five years before, submitted two years later for the Tezuka Award in ’80 and thus lead to the start of “Wingman” three years later in ’83.)

TN: The second chapter is a bit slow compared to what I expected, but it does introduce a lot of elements and further seems to develops the character interactions on several matters. First of all, the mysterious "girl" (she doesn't have a name as of yet so I won't reveal it) finally comes into play...and in some ways, if it weren't for being so exposed to so many other shonen I wouldn't have anything to compare her to. But somehow, "she" just seems to be a weird combination of Botan and Rukia with just a sprinkle of Lum in her. Her interactions with Kenta at this point are very cute and intriguing, particularly with her Dimensional Power, her being too preoccupied with her original mission of burning the Dream Note and just the whole excitement she has in making it to our 3-D world. (which probably proves Podreams isn't really going to be heaven) Kenta's interaction with her...well, I know some would say it is standard shonen romance, I found it rather fun: a male lead so immature that he really has a hard time putting up with girls. (well maybe not Miku but more like girls like "her") Kenta's interaction regarding the strange transformation to Wingman and the power of the Dream Note he now possesses was interesting too: while "banned weaponry that shouldn't be used" is a typical story plot of shonen, just the idea of such a notebook that can make "thoughts come alive" instead of "kills people" or something sick shows that it probably belongs with a person with an overactive imagination like his. (even if "she" probably wants to use him due to this) As for Miku...well, I know I hate making more comparisons to other series, but I really see her a bit like Hinata at this time. Slightly unconfident, knowing that she may like a boy who may like her in return but has a really hard time expressing herself. And of course, really cute. (then again "she"'s cute too but more with her weird and sweet and seductive expressions)

He was a middle-school boy who still believed in his elementary school ideals of humans who transformed into heroes to save the day, whether it got him cheers or mocked by his peers and teachers. But one day, a girl and a mysterious notebook fell from the sky...who would change his world forever! From the creator of Zetman, I''s and Video Girl Ai comes the Weekly Shonen Jump sentai/sci-fi/romance/comedy/action manga that put him on the map!

Wingman by Masakazu Katsura

Vol. 1: Transform!!
Chp. 1: An Ally of Justice

Side Comment (front cover):
No--I'm tired, I'm tired. Today, somehow the condition on the Grand Birth is bad and I was up working overnight......Eh? Right, my work was work "for the cover". I'm the guy whose "Wingman" is being serialized in the weekly "Shonen Jump", so therefore after that I'm already half asleep. Patrol wasn't really fun, eh? A comment for the comic? N---well, everyone please buy this. That work?

(TN: "Grand Birth" is a fortress in the metal-hero series "Uchuu Keiji Sharivan" (Space Detective Sharivan), which ran between 1983 (when Wingman started) & 1984)

5.
Caption: Chuugaku Middle School
(TN: There’s a tiny bit of a pun: the school is called in Japanese “Chuugaku Chuugakkou”. “Chuugakkou” is “Middle School”, and “Chuugaku”, using its usual reading, is also “middle school”. However, the kanji used for the “Chuugaku” here uses the kanji “chuu” for “relationship” and the “gaku” for “picture”, so the best name for it is “relationship picture”)
Boy: I have to hurry…if I don’t transform into Wingman quickly…

6-7.
(Title page)

8.
Teacher: --So that’s why.
Teacher: Well, let’s move on. Hirono, read this.
Teacher: Hirono—
Student: Teacher! If you want Kenta, he went into the hall to transform!
Teacher: Wh, what!?

9.
Student 1: Really! He did it--!!
Student 2: Viva Viva
Teacher: Hey, what is “it he did”!
(TN: This was a bit weird but one of the students said “yatta”, and the teacher goes “what’s with the “yatta”…I tried to make it work in English)
Teacher: Fukumoto! Why didn’t you stop him?
Fukumoto: But—I can’t betray an ally of justice—
Boy: Did someone do something bad!?
Girl: Whatever he’s doing, he’s destroyed class again.
Teacher: Ah~~what is this?
Teacher: If I don’t stop Hirono quickly.
Teacher: Uh.

10.
Kenta: CALLING WINGMAN
Teacher: I’m too late.
Narrator: Well, how did he transform into Wingman? I’ll show you the process. (It should be kept secret…)
Kenta: I have to hurry… if I don’t transform into Wingman quickly…
Kenta: Chaing!
Caption: Compound word of “Change” and “Wing”

11.
Kenta: Ah, damn.
Kenta: Well even if I really attached it, it came off easily—
Kenta: Complete

12.
Students: Hey, we’ve waited for you!!
Teacher: Hey, hey.
Students: Hi-ro-no—great—Wa—cool—gya—Ah—Wha—
Teacher: Well—please. Whatever you’re doing, you can’t do it during class.
Kenta: I can’t go when I see evil.
Teacher: What, who is it you say is doing it!!
Teacher: N

13.
Teacher: Isn’t he just dozing!
Kenta: Just? You say dozing in class is good, teacher?
Teacher: We, well, it isn’t but…
Kenta: Hey, Masaki, get up.
Masaki: N~~
Masaki: Uh, u—m, OK, um, well—
Book: History
Kenta: Whose turn is it to read?
Masaki: Ge, Hirono.

14.
Masaki: Um, well, last night I was studying overnight. And I was just
Kenta: No matter…how much studying you do overnight, you shouldn’t doze off in school.
Kenta: Don’t doze off again or I’ll punish you!!
Girl: Hirono-kun!
Girl: While we’re at it, could you please not disturb our class? I have nothing to do with that dozer or anything, but you shouldn’t be doing that during class.

15.
Boy 1: Fall in line, studyholic.
(TN: “Studyholic” is a variation of the Japanese word “Gariben”, which is a short version of the expression “garigari benkyou suru”, which is “a selfish studier”)
Boy 2: Hirono was right, we shouldn’t have dozers!
Girl: Please quiet. All of you are slowing the class with this.
Boy: Oh—no no, you’re a studying robot due to these exams—
Boys: Cave in~~Wha—law-abider~~
(TN: One of the screamers calls the girl “Hooki Atama”, or “law head”, but somehow I thought “law-abider” worked…personally I wanted to use “straight-laced”)
Girl: Wh, what’s that!!
Boys: Wha—wha—gya—
Boys: What, ugly!
Teacher: ……………

16.
Students: Gya—wha—wha—great—pi—pi—
Students: Yay yay Oh—I—hihi—e—hehe-o—hoho—pi-chiku pa-chiku Gaya gaya Uh—
Homeroom Teacher: The class next door is noisy. Actually, next door is my class…its Kenta-kun again…
Homeroom Teacher: Do some self-study for a bit.
Girl 1: Hey, it’s that Hirono-kun again?
Girl 2: It is, I’m sure.

17.
Boys: Do it—Kenta. Wa—wa—
Kenta: Now quiet down or I’ll punish you!
Homeroom Teacher: Hirono-kun.
Kenta: N?
Homeroom Teacher: You haven’t failed to embarrass
Homeroom Teacher: YOUR HOMEROOM TEACHER!!

18.
“Author”: It’s now lunch, fufufufufufu
Jacket: KASHOU
(TN: There’s quite a bit going on in this panel, so I’ll try to explain it all. First: the two kanji at the top of the jacket is “Gashou”, which is Japanese for “Happy New Year”. However, below is the word “sakusha”, which is Japanese for “author”. Take into account that the second kanji is the same kanji as the one in “Masakazu”, the first name of Wingman mangaka Masakazu Katsura and you can read it subsequently as “Congrats, Masa”. As for the pictures in the background, they are all references to several Toei-based tokusatsu heroes notable in the era, including:
-Goggle V, a reference to 1982-1983 Sentai series “Dai Sentai Goggle V” (Great Warriors Goggle V)
-Gavan is a reference to “Metal Hero” tokusatsu “Uchuu Keiji Gavan” (Space Sheriff Gavan), which ran in 1982-1983
-Dynaman is in reference to “Kagaku Sentai Dynaman”(Scientific Warriors Dynaman), the sentai series running by the start of Wingman in 1983 and running through 1984.)
Kenta: Nn.
Kenta: N?
“Collaborator”: Toei
Girl: Ah, are you conscious?

19.
Girl: Are you OK? Matsuoka-sensei was mean as well.
Kenta: Was she.
Girl: Hold on now. The nurse isn’t here.
Kenta: Well.
Girl: Here.
Girl: It’s already lunch.

20.
Kenta: Ah, really.
Girl: …………
Girl: Hey, Hirono-kun, I thought what you were thinking was correct.
Girl: But, I think it isn’t right to do that during class. You could get expelled for this.
Girl: Ah…I’m sorry, I said it selfishly.
Kenta: Um, no.
Kenta: Well then, what are you doing here?
Girl: Eh?

21.
Girl: Ah, I’m on the health committee…
Kenta: Hm—m. (to himself) …that girl is in my class…
Girl: Well then.
Girl: Ah, from here, Matsuoka-sensei wants you to come to the staff room after school.
Girl: Bye.
Kenta: O*K.
Kenta: …..Women are nice.

22.
Sign: Staff Room
Matsuoka: Understood!? If you do that anymore, then you’re no good!!
Kenta: Women are horrible.
Matsuoka: Really, you’ve been acting like you’re in grade school for a long time. Please stop this random “ally of justice” make-believe!
Matsuoka: You will forfeit this.
Kenta: Th, that’s--!!

23.
Matsuoka: When you graduate, I will properly return it.
Kenta: Why can’t I think of your behavior when I play this ally of justice? Thus, this happens.
Kenta: If I have a future, then I think I really want to become an ally of justice.
Matsuoka: What are you saying? You have a reason to become some ally of justice?
Kenta: Wh—y can’t I have this!? This is just growth in science! In the future, there may be a drug that can clothe one to become an ally of justice!
(TN: I'm not quite too sure about this, but Kenta's "scenario" is slightly similar to the concept set up for the Dynaman series airing at the time of Wingman's start, involving 5 special "inventors" recruited and given the power to become the sentai heroes of the season)
Matsuoka: It’s unfortunate, but that sort of drug will never be made.
Matsuoka: Well, TV and reality are completely different. Its better in the public to become a policeman, understood?

24.
Matsuoka: No matter how much science progresses, you should choose to strengthen into being a policeman than to give birth by yourself to a superman like on TV.
Kenta: If it came now, I would create a drug like such.
Matsuoka: No--way, it’s impossible to have those results now—
Kenta: …………
Matsuoka: That’s enough…understand? Please stop with your “ally of justice” make-believe during class.
Kenta: …………
Matsukoa: Please go home realizing that.

25.
Kenta: That id—iot rockhead! Empty-head! Ugly! Blockhead!! I’ll bash that top horn in the head and kill her!!
(TN: The "blockhead" part is actually in conjunction with an expression only used in Wingman of "Paatare".
Kenta: Really, doesn’t she have a bra—in? (HA HA)
Voice: Hirono.
Kenta: What is it!!
Kenta: Ah.
Boy: What is that? I’ve been waiting here a while—

26.
Voice: Gyahahaha!
Boy: So you’ve finally shown an interest in girls too?
Boy: How-ever, it’s strange that there are people you don’t know the name of in class.
Kenta: …………
Boy: She is on the Health Committee actually. Miku Ogawa.
Kenta: Miku Ogawa.
Boy: You’ve fallen for her.
Kenta: N, n, no!

27.
Boy: Of—course—a hero can gain an opening with a girl. So they don’t have time for them.
Kenta: Uh.
Boy: WA—HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
Kenta: We—ll, ri—ght.
Boy: Well, that isn’t favorable for the behavior of an ally of justice. But it’s too bad that you can’t close your eyes to it in class.
Boy: If you can be an ally of justice even in middle school, then it will cut you off from Miku-chan.
Boy: That’s all for now, see you tomorrow.
Kenta: Right—

28.
Kenta: Ri—ght.
Miku: I think it isn’t right to do that during class…
Kenta: Of—course. If I look strictly at reality, then I shouldn’t be familiar with any sort of ally of justice--.
Kenta: No. But perhaps, I may be familiar with this. (worry, worry) U—mm.

29.
SFX: KYUIN KYUIN
Kenta: N?
Kenta: Wh, what’s that sound?
SFX: KYUIN KYUIN
Kenta: Above!?
Kenta: !?
Kenta: ?
Kenta: EH!?

30.
SFX: KYUIN KYUIN
Kenta: WH WHAAAT~~~!?

31.
Kenta: WA--!
Kenta: Wh-what!! Wh-what!!
Kenta: Wh-what!! Wh-what!! Wh…

32.
Kenta: Anyhow, I have to go home!
Sign: Hirono
Kenta: Should I take her to a hospital? It’ll be terrible if my parents see her.
Kenta: But what is this woman?

33.
Kenta: This is some sort of notebook…
Kenta: This is a very cool notebook.
Kenta: N.
Kenta: What is this pen? Do I write with this?
Kenta: Oh—this writing feel is neat.

34.
Kenta: This notebook is new. Nothing’s written in it.
Kenta: With a cool notebook like this, I’ll just, just draw up Wingman.
Kenta: This is Wingman—I say.
Caption: This is Wingman.
Kenta: Tra-nsf-orm-ation Ye-ll—is…um, Ch-a—Ch-a-i-n-g.
Kenta: Chaing!! OK, decided.
Kenta: His Certain-Kill Technique is…
Girl: Nn…
Kenta: Uh.

35.
Kenta: Uh uh
Kenta: Aah, it hurts.
Kenta: My, my body hurts!!

36.
Kenta: Uuuh~~

TN: Hello there, those of you reading this, and welcome to another one of my silly little translation projects. To tell the truth, I actually didn't really expect to start this project so soon (and somehow am already starting to expect someone to shut me down within one or two days for some such reason whether it be my translations sucked or they wanted to do it or they already were doing it or...well, pigs flying), but welcome to my silly translations of the Masakazu Katsura classic "Wingman"! It's strange that after finishing up with one manga that put a mangaka on the map (Takeshi Obata's "Cyborg Jii-chan G") that I would start another one that put another notable mangaka on the map. Heck, considering that Katsura is one of the more well known mangaka out there, I expected this series to have already gotten a complete translation! But somehow or another I haven't seen too much or too many interested in looking into this series...maybe it isn't a pure romance series akin to I''s or not the latest series he's doing like Zetman, but somehow I think such a notable and important Jump series, both in content and in connection, really needs to get out there amidst everything else.

So where does one exactly begin in regards to Wingman...well I guess the best place to start is the concept. To many shonen readers, a story where a mysterious "being" from another realm arrives with a mysterious object or meeting with the lead is probably old-hat in shonen. But in 1983, when the series started, it probably was still a tad more novel than it is these days. We really don't have much to stand with regarding "the mysterious girl" at this point (but I'll have plenty to say about her in the next couple chapters...), but note in particular that the key to the series (well, the origin of Kenta's powers) is "a magic notebook that falls from the sky that gives a protagonist who finds it and who has a weird sense of justice a unique power"...now where have I heard that before? Aside from people who probably are going to ask when L and Misa are going to show up (well since "she" is technically Ryuk...well more like Rukia but as I said, that's another chapter), it does seem rather ironic, maybe even tributing, that the concept of "the magic notebook falling from the sky" came out of this series which appeared 20 years before Death Note took over the world! It probably goes back even further, but it is strange that such a concept would appear in two different series 20 years apart.

Most of the chapter prior to that sequence of Kenta finding the notebook and "the girl" is mostly a nice set-up to his character. I do seem to like that he has a sense of 'juvinille justice', desiring to do the right things but at the same time still liking things he had and did as a kid. His interactions with his teachers, particularly homeroom teacher Matsuoka, shows that he does respect them but at the same time doesn't want to be bound by what they say "justice" is and the ideas that he had being stuck in his kiddy mode. (probably a parallel, going back to my "Death Note" comment earlier, of Light just being a tad "too mature" in his concepts of justice and the black-and-white nature of man...Kenta is black-and-white too but more like a tokusatsu superhero than...well, Light) Another nice introduction is the first appearance of Miku, who shows herself to respect Kenta but thinks he is a tad strange and over the top with his strange views of the world. She's obviously the "concerned cute one" compared to the mysterious girl at the end. Another interesting girl, who sadly dissappears after this, is the glasses pigtailed freckled one who takes Matsuoka's concepts of Kenta being a blockhead...but sadly, as I said, what would have been an interesting character is thrown away after this chapter. Wish somehow Katsura could have used her cause she wasn't that bad looking...but somehow the nerdy types weren't popular in manga at that point I guess.
