<Sweet Apple> This was my first one-shot. I remember I had a tough time finishing this. [SL: Oh no~] I had absolutely no time, and I made the story through Image Character Formation --> Title --> The Story, which is the opposite of how I usually do it (right now, I do it The Story---> Title ---> Image Character Formation) At first, I wanted to go for a bitter-love kind of story, but that didn't work out, so it ended up becoming completely different from how I originally imagined it...Well, I guess life's unpredictable like that. My editor told me again and again that "Girls should be charming!" but I ended up drawing a character who's a bit on the stupid side... I wonder why...[SL: If a girl like her existed in real life, I don't think I'd like her very much!]

<Shounen B> ...Since in Sweet Apple, the girls had the main focus with the guy being a bit on the plain side, I decided to make up for it in this story. As you probably noticed, even in the title it mentions "Shounen" [Young Boy] (Laughs) It's my first time drawing a main guy character who's younger than the main girl character, but it was pretty easy drawing him. I guess characters with strong personalities are easier to draw.
Pg 2: Risa: Mari---! I can't believe you!! [sign reads "Cooking Room"] Risa: Who in the world these days mixes up salt with sugar?! Mari: B-But I swear I didn't mess up this time--[SL: I did everything you told me!] //snap// [SL: Mari: Whaaa--!] Risa: Don't try to make excuses! This story has as its main imagery the transformation of a chrysalis into a butterfly. Now that I think about it though, in the past I've written a story that involved slugs. Does everyone think I'm into bugs?
To tell you the truth, I REALLLYYY hate bugs! I would never touch them and I'm scared to even look at them! Something must have happened in my past life involving bugs, I just know it! I get goosebumps just thinking about them! But don't worry, I don't believe in killing bugs. That would be mean of me.
(But the cockroaches that dare intrude my house is a different story all together!)
Even though I do hate bugs, there's just something in me that keeps coming back to them for some reason... I don't know what it is about them that intrigues me. Maybe it's the fact that I can feel such a strong energy force coming from such a small living thing... Watching them live in the single-minded way they do, even as those around them call them bad names, makes me think that there are many forms and reasons for living! ...that's what I think anyway...

Because, listen to this! Until the release of this volume, I could swear I was cursed! (cries) I ended up going to the hospital like 20 times (cries) (I had to try out lots of different kinds of medicine!) My soul even went through a beating! It really was a "Hey, God! Shouldn't I be through with all this pain already?!" moment.
But it made me realize how amazing humans are. I have nothing to fear now that I've gone through such a trying part of my life! Hehe, way to go me! Telling you this lets me say with confidence that I've finally blossomed into a butterfly. While I was still a chrysalis, I was always complaining about this and that, and there were times I felt I was worthless.

I'll be blunt. I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to draw someone who wasn't just a "cool and goodlooking" character. (laughs) But I also knew that as long as he was a jerk, I had to make him that much more goodlooking to make up for it. He ended up being such a jerk my manager tried to stop me from going through with it. Hahaha. So I tried to draw the line at a "reasonably normal jerkiness" level. (Does such a thing exist?) No matter how hard I try though, my characters always end up having a soft-side to them. I think a good quality to have in a person is someone who's constantly battling with himself. Not just in manga either!]

Ageo He was the first character I decided on for this series. He was the first character who's name I decided on. He was the only character who ended up being "normal" in this series. And he was my favorite character to draw (laughs).
While I was drawing the manga, I seriously contemplated who I would choose if I were her--- either Yanagi or Ageo. (I hardly ever think about stuff like this when it comes to my characters!) Even though Yanagi has the personality that he does, he'll probably be the more "stable" choice since he'll most likely go on to work as a teacher. On the otherhand, even though Ageo has the nicer personality, he's a musician so I'd probably have to live a life of borderline poverty (laughs). I'm such a realist. Who would you choose? (Well it doesn't really matter, but...)
Yanagi is a fox, Ageo is a raccoon, and Sekina is a kitten. Those were the images I had when creating their characters. I wonder why they were all based on animals...?]

Uumm...well this time around, I wanted to stick with a character who was easy to draw. And since short hair is pretty popular right now, I decided to go with a short haircut. Don't you think short hair possesses both an innocent and sexy atmosphere? //thump thump// Now that I think about it, the character in this story has a birthday in one of the chapters, but I've never really thought too deep about stuff like that before. The story probably takes place during the Spring (I think...). I know some mangakas are really specific when it comes to the details. They even think about what their character's favorite foods are. It's not that I don't care enough about my characters, but I'm more the type to slowly discover my characters, layer by layer so I can never decide on one set quality. It's only in the end that I think "Oooh, this person was THIS type..." (laughs)

Hello, I'm Natsumi Rin! This time around, with "Sanagi to Ousama", I was aiming for a more serious storyline. To tell you the truth, the original story I had in mind was really really dark. But I tried to make it so that it wasn't so different in terms of atmosphere from my other works. What do you think? (laughs)
I have this personality that makes me hard to write a story that's inbetween genres. So it has to be either a super serious storyline, or a super comedic storyline. That's why people are always telling me: "Why don't you write stories in the middle of the two?" Haha. But it's always impossible for me to do so so I always end up wracking my brain over it!
Anyway, I hope I can one day be able to write serious and comedic stories. As long as I have two elements in me whether it be between genres or otherwise, I don't want to have to decide on just one, and I don't think I have to. Because by leaving both options, it just opens up a whole new field of opportunities!]
