They were both from some old acquaintances of mine. Both letters arrived from New York.

One letter was from Maiza, a fellow alchemist.

In the letter, he wrote: “Szilard’s existence has been erased from this world, so you can live without any worries now.”

114
Szilard Quates.
That is the name of the despicable old man who betrayed us right after we achieved immortality and he began devouring our comrades 200 years earlier.

Because of him, our comrades scattered. Now the few that remain are living out their lives quietly, fearing this “cannibalism”. Naturally, this includes me as well.

Honestly, what a nuisance he was. He didn’t trust me in the least bit.

The things I least wanted to see, the visions that made me sick to the stomach encroached into my mind.

The feelings of being betrayed and the memories of the betrayer.

I’ve continued to live all this time in the agony born from possessing these two conflicting feelings.

119
I realized just how pathetic, filthy, and puny people’s existences are in this world.

Szilard was a man who devoted himself to his passions and I used to look up to him, but that damn old man probably only saw me as his food.

That’s fine with me. I only mentioned that I wanted to see him.

I picked a date and time to meet him. We agreed on the meeting date in another letter.

The other letter had also come from an old acquaintance of mine in New York.

I contemplated telling Maiza about it, but I decided it was none of his business anyway.

The contents of that letter requested some “explosives” that were a side-product from my research.

121
Talk about a stroke of luck.

On top of earning a vast amount of money, I’ll be able to eat both Maiza and that person.

If I devour Maiza, then I’ll also be able to obtain all the knowledge Szilard accumulated.

SFX open/ka-click

122
I selected a train to transport the explosives: the “Flying Pussyfoot” ---- a unique train that’s managed by an enterprise independent of any railroad corporation, a convenient train which was used to smuggle contraband alcohol.

I gathered up the money I had at home and successfully loaded a large amount of explosives onto that train.

I became lost in my fantasies where my wishes came true,

And when I came to my senses, I was grinning.

SFX close/click

123
Part 3: “The Masquerading Robbers”

December 1931
Inside a mine in California

SFX thunk thunk

Hey, Isaac.

People normally look for gold in a river,
so why are we digging a hole?

Hahaha!
That’s only ‘cause the guys here have no idea where to look for the gold!

‘Sides, if we try panning for gold in a river, we’ll get yelled at about it being someone else’s turf and stuff.
By a stranger, no less!

That sure was embarrassing!

124
However!!
On the way to this abandoned gold mine, I saw a centipede!

A huge one with hundreds of legs!

Eeeek!
