Title: Afterward Room
Umino: This short works collection is made up of things I wrote from 2000 to 2004.
Handwritten: I'm Bun-chan. This is Mommy's book.
Umino: They're works that came out around the time Honey and Clover's serialization started.
When we were going to collect them in a tankoubon like this, I thought I would make some revisions, but...
'Where should I even start with corrections?!' I thought, as I say head-over-heels in front of these crude, awkward manuscripts.
SFX: WAAA KYAAA
Umino: But on Twitter, lots of readers said 'Please let us see them how they were at the time without revising them all that much.' so it ended up... not having any drastic changes made.
So this short works collection is packed with 'My best from 10 years ago'.
So now I'm wondering if in 10 more years I'll re-read Lion that I'm writing now and feel embarassed like this... Well, I think I'm going to keep going and drawing steadily one step at a time.

Ok, here's the last one-shot. It's a story about Umino Chica speculating about a movie that came out in 2004. Now I've just gotta do the omake.

Title: While Waiting
for Innocence / Unimo Chica
Umino: I know this is out of nowhere,
but I have dreams like this all the time.
I'm standing on a train platform
and before my eyes, trains stop one after another and then pass by in an instant.
I should be able to get on any one of them, but they come and go so hectically that I can't get on.
---And this is also sudden, but
I get the same feeling when I go into a bookstore or a video store.
With all the titles jammed together in one place, my mind goes blank.
I should be able to look at any one I want, but for some reason I can't choose any.

Page 98:
Umino: And then the first thing I took in my hand was Director Oshii's work
the Patlabor Movie.
It seemed a bit complicated despite being an anime.
...And while I thought that, the reason I picked it up from all of the other videos
was this background
on the back of the package.
That was a spot from right next to the high school I went to.
'The scenery I saw every day is in this...'
----I thought. And so I couldn't help but take an interest in the video.
I went home, cheerfully holding it in my armsm
I enjoyed it,
and the next day, I went to rend the sequel movie.

Umino: And as I watched Patlabor 1 and 2 over and over again, what was left in my mind was
the image of that town
as if it were etched into it.
---And after that
from among that everyday scenery that was etched into my mind again and again enough to make me feel faint, what stood out was
the form of a character that did not talk about her inner thoughts.
What attracted me the most
was one woman called Captain Nagumo.

Page 100:
Umino: There was a scene where she was standing alone in the snow, going to meet her former lover while holding a gun in her hand.
I watched that scene over and over again like it had possessed me.
She didn't say anything or express any emotion on her face as she walked along a waterway in the snow. And as if wrapping around her,
the city's giant silhouette covered her.
Whenever you draw light in a drawing, what you actually put on the paper are the shadows.
In order to represent bright sunlight, you make the color of the shadows stronger.
The thickness of the shadows decides the strength of the light itself.
"What is behind" draws attention to "what is in front".
Thinking about that,
I somehow managed to understand those 'backgrounds' with overwhelming amount of information in them
that they tried to make stand out.
----In my own way.

Page 101:
Umino: Among the inhabitants of Oshii's works that never talk about their innermost thoughts... there is one more that stands out to me.
Batou from Ghost in the Shell.
When I look at him, for some reason, I get really sad.
He's a person who is completely artificial apart from his 'brain', but to me he was the most human character in the Oshii work and I think of him more lovingly than any other.
Handwritten: She has an artificial body just like him, but he gives her a jacket!!
He turns around when she starts to change!!!
Umino: In Ghost in the Shell, near the end, he yelled 'her name' just once.
It seemed like he was always calling her name in his mind, right?
Handwritten: This humanity......
Before I knew it, I felt embarassed and started fidgeting-----!!
But he always used to call her Major!
The way I see it, 'humanity' is basically something that dwells in the lamest part of that person.
Batou isn't one bit stylish. Rather, he's pretty clumsy and unrefined, so to me he seems really sweet to me.
Because of that, the preview of the "Innocence" movie that's coming out this Spring hurts me in my chest...
'Batou is a living doll. His arms, legs, and entire body are artificial.'
'All that's left is a little bit of brain and memories of one woman...'
'2501'... Let's make that the password for when we meet again someday.

Page 102:
Umino: When two people depart, what tears apart their hearts is 'the promise of reunion'.
---And also they put that word 'someday' in the promise.
'Someday'... It has a maddening ring to it, doesn't it? Its weight and gloominess makes it seem like it could take a seemingly endless amount of time...
Was Batou always waiting, believing that?
In his only remnant, his brain, did he keep bringing up that promise over and over countless times, fixating on it so much it got worn out?
It's like a ticket he held onto for so long it got all shoddy...
After I saw that preview, I thought a lot of different things and ended up with endless emotions.
Handwritten: Like the puppy in the Victor logo "His Master's Voice"..... [Top Right]

It kinda reminds me... of Batou... [Bottom center]
And that dog that waited forever for his master... [Bottom left]

T/N: This is a reference to the famous statue of Hashikou in Shiobuya.
Umino: I wonder if Batou will be able to meet 'her' again?
Even if he is, if it's only for an instant, then after that instant passes
what will he wait now, as his life continues?
I wonder what kind of answer Director Oshii has for Batou.
Or does he not have an answer at all?
There's something I want to find in "Innocence", and that is the lonely ghost's destination.
