Story 4: Investigation (Part 3)
Page 2
Haji: ...Um...
Maybe it was out of place of me to let Kudan-san stay here...?
Natsumi: ...Maybe a bit.
Harumi nee-san hates it when things happen without her decision...
Natsumi: Uh...um...nee-sama, since you will be preparing for the ceremony...
I can show the guests around...
Harumi: You should be quiet.
Page 3
Kudan: Hoh! This is extraordinary.
All of the furniture and works of art here are first-rate.
Kadan: I can tell the owner has good taste by just look at them.
Harumi: Ah, you seem to have a discerning eye for one so young.
The Chigira family's collection is well-known for this area.
Kadan: If I may, I would like to ask you about their origins.
Harumi: Fufu.
You flatter me.
Natsumi: ...He's getting along really well with nee-sama.
Haji(above head): ...Impressive, Kudan-san
Kudan: Although I may not appear to be one, I am a journalist...so I would like to be knowledgeable in such things.
Harumi: I see.
Page 4
Harumi: Please use this room over here.
Haji-san is also staying here, but there is another room farther in.
Kudan: Thank you very much.
Kudan: ...And sorry, can I ask for something?
If internet is available here, I would like to please use it...
Harumi: Of course...I do use it as well.
Kudan: ...I'm glad.
Kudan: I feel uncomfortable if I am unable to keep up with my work.
Harumi: ...Please enjoy yourselves.
Page 5
Kudan: Hoh...there is even a detached house...
This kind of fine mansions are rare these days.
Kudan: ---However, with a house like this,
Just exactly how do they manage to maintain it?
Page 6
Haji: Who knows...it was probably an inheritance.
Since it doesn't feel like they're doing any sort of business.
Haji: By the way---
Haji: A while ago you said you'll thank me if I find you a place to stay.
I just want you to lend me a little bit of wisdom---
Haji: Kudan-san, do you know of something called "Monoimi"?
Kudan: ...You didn't seem like you would be interested in this sort of talk.
Kudan: What brought up this particular subject?
Haji: Actually...I heard that the practice of "Monoimi" remains from ancient times...
Haji: If memeory serves me right, in the past, on moonless nights, people would confine themselves in their homes. (side)Although I don't know much about that...
Page 7
Kudan: That would be Monoimi from Onmyoudou.
Originally, "Monoimi" was a form of fortune-telling, and went all the way back to the period of the first written Japanese literature.
TN: Onmyoudou is a traditional Japanese esoteric cosmology, with Chinese influences.
Kudan: It is about predicting the future by listening to the "voice of god".
Kudan: It helped the persons who became the new ruler.
Kudan: According to the ancient works, those one chosen by "Monoimi" were the younger sister of the ruler---
Haji: !
Haji(thought): ...Younger sister...?
Kudan: They were treated like the other offerings to the god---
Page 8
Kudan: ...What's wrong?
Haji: Ah...well, it's just that my friend's last words had something to do with his younger sister...
Kudan: ...Interesting.
SFX: *Click*
Haji: ...Oh.
Haji: Sorry, it's almost time for the funeral...
Let's talk again afterward.
Page 9
Kudan(thought): ...Time to confirm something.
Kudan: It would be nice if this is the house in question...
Fuyumi: I can't stand it anymore!!
Page 10
Fuyumi: I won't!!
Fuyumi: I only said "yes" before because I didn't know what's going on and was told that it was for Hatsumi nii-san's sake!!
If Akihito becomes the head of the family, he'll start doing "that" again!!
Woman: No...Harumi-sama looked into Hatsumi-sama---
Fuyumi: Anyway, I don't like it!! I hate Harumi and Akihito!! And I won't go to the funeral!!
Woman: Fuyumi-sama, I understand your feelings, but please bear with it---
If the Chigira family falls, the one who will suffer is you...
Page 11
Haji: Ah...
Haji: ...Um, it's Fuyumi-san right?
Haji: Your brother's ceremony is starting.
Fuyumi: Why are you eavesdropping!?
It has nothing to do with you!!
Woman: Fuyumi-sama...!
Haji(thought): ...Nothing I can do.
Page 12
Nothing

Box: Chigira Second Son/Akihito
TN: Aki means autumn, so it appears that other than Hatsumi (hatsu means first), the other children are all named after seasons.
Box: Chigira Ryouko
Box: Servant/Nire Shuichiro.
Page 14
Ryouko: Hatsumi...
Hatsumi...!
Ryouko: Even you are dead...
In...in that case...
Nire: Ma'am...please calm down...
Natsumi: Mother...
Natsumi: It's alright...I'm still here.
Ryouko: Oooh...Natsumi...
Nire: Excuse me...
I think I will let her rest in the room over there...
Page 15
Haji(thought): ...I see... She she is Hatsumi's mother...
Box: ---Hatsumi,
Box: What exactly did you want me to do...?
Page 16
Man: ...
Harumi: Thank you everyone for taking time out of your busy schedules to gather here today.
Harumi: Dinner will be served after this so please relax and enjoy yourselves.
I shall be absent for a little while to perform a Chigira family tradition---
Page 17
Harumi: The new family head, Akihito, will be saying a few words.
Harumi: Now if you please---
Haji(thought): So that's Akihito...
Akihito: Uh--- Yo, everyone.
Akihito" I'm Akihito, the new head.
Haji: ...
Akihito: Um--- Well, let's get along.
Haji(thought): ...He gives a completely different impression compared with Hatsumi... (side)In many ways...
Page 18
Haji: !
Akihito: Yo, who're you? Never seen you before.
Haji: Ah...I'm Hatsumi-kun's friend, Haji...
Akihito: Ah...ah, I see I see. So you're the one who brought back bro's remains.
Thanks for your trouble. So you're from overseas?
Haji: Yes...
Akihito: Geez, he should've stopped being so stubborn and just came back quickly.
Akihito: Well, though I do understand how he'd hate having Harumi-nee hovering over him all the time.
Haji: Huh?
Akihito: What, so bro never told you anything about his family?
Page 19
Akihito: To be honest, this house is looked after by Harumi-nee.
Akihito: She upholds all the shitty traditions to make this place prosper.
The rest of us live with freedom in this countryside.
Akihito: Here, I can get all the cars and clothes I want.
Akihito: I dunno why anyone would wanna leave by choice.
Haji: ...It certainly makes me envious.
Haji: Besides that, Harumi-san...said something about "tradition", but where is she going at this hour?
Page 20
Akihito: Oh...she's going to the shrine of Otobiki Stone to announce the change in family heads.
Should be back in an hour and a half or so.
Haji: ...I see...So I can see her after that.
Akihito: Hm--what, what? Don't tell me you have a date with Harumi-nee?
Akihito: Hahaa, well, I can see that. She's got quite the style and the pretty face <3 (side)Although she's a bit scary.
And recently the guy at the station also has his eyes on her.
Haji: Ah... (arrow)So it's that person...
Man: Akihito-san, come over here-!
Let's drink together-!
Akihito: Alrigh then,
I'll see ya later, Haji-san.
Haji: Sure.
Page 21
Will the family be alright with him like that?
I say the Chigira family's era will no doubt end in the future.
Page 22
Kudan: What an outfit...
Where are you headed to?
Harumi: Kudan-san...
Harumi: Because we have a new family head now...
I have to go inform our god---
Harumi: ...It must seem funny to you, how we keep such an old tradition in this remote place.
Page 23
Harumi: Offerings to the god...holding events and festivals...performing purifications and exorcisms...they are all such stupid customs.
Harumi: But I have given up everything to this family since I was a teenager--- And even now, that will not change.
Kudan: That is quite applaudable.
Harumi: !
Kudan: I will not ask how you do it, but you are holding together the home all by yourself.
Kudan: It must only be possible because you have conviction, is it not?
Harumi: ...Thank you.
Harumi: You are so kind, Kudan-san.
Kudan: By the way, I heard that there is a storehouse...would it be possible for me to take a look?
Harumi: That is fine. The servent named Ayae has to key to it.
Page 24
Kudan: I see.
---Well then,
Kudan: The mountain path at night is dangerous...please be careful---
Page 25
Haji: Traditions...I see...
Natsumi: Ah, Haji-san, so you were here.
Haji: Yes, I was looking for a place to have a smoke...
Haji: It must have been tough...with the way your mother was.
Natsumi: Yes...She has been worried about brother ever since he left home...
But now she no longer has to.
Natsumi: Oh yeah!
Tomorrow would be fine, but will you tell me stories about brother?
Haji: In the Middle East...?
Natsumi: Yes. Mother seems to want to know how he fared over there as well...
Page 26
Haji: Well...you can probably tell by the way I look, but drinking, smoking, gambling, I did them all.
Haji: Middle East is an abstinence society, so I was wondering if Hatsumi was really Japanese.
Haji: Unlike me, he was a serious guy, and you hear absolutely no rumors about him---
Haji: Once during a patrol, he saved a beauty who was being attacked by thugs, and she thanked him profusely...
Haji: But if it were me, I'd definitely have made a pass at her.
Natsumi: I see... (side)Please don't mention that in front of mother...
Natsumi: ...But I have never left this home...so I envy those who work abroad.
Haji: Haha...you'll have plenty of chances in the future.
Haji: If it's alright with you, I can show you around.
Natsumi: ...Huh?
Page 27
Natsumi: ...Really?
Haji: Yes, if you're fine with it.
Box: ---At that time,
Box: I still didn't know.
Page 28
...That curtain of tragedy has been lifted.
