Chp. 276: The 2nd Door!!
147.
J: Cha…Champ---!!
148.
J: You were the greatest champ whom I yearned for and respected………………!! I will never forget your name……………!!
149.
Siegfried: Ku, that idiot Stanley! That foolish behavior!! Carry out that corpse quickly!!
Officer: Yes!
Siegfried: Well, you should choose your 2nd door!! Stanley didn’t possess the floppy disk that you had desired!!
Pharaoh: Damn it, that bald-headed f**king oldie---!!
Togashi: He doesn’t have even blood or tears!!
Toramaru: Heh, anyway, we’ve thought it out and know, don’t we---!! The middle!!
Togashi: Right!! Open the middle door---!!
150.
Siegfried: Fine, the middle door. Well, open it.
Siegfried: Fufu, that’s an amusing selection!! Inside that door have been entered the appropriate competition opponents for the two of you!!
Toramaru: Wh…what---!! He…hey, wait!!
Togashi: Wh…what: a competition opponent for the two of us…………!?
Siegfried: Haven’t I said it!? I’ve decided here that the person who selects the door will fight!! Because both of you chose it as a simultaneous pair, both of you will fight as a duo!!
Toramaru: Wha…!?
151.
Siegfried: These two---!!
152.
Hou Kintan: My name is Hou Kintan. And this is my little brother Gintan. Thank you!! You’ve opened the door of we, the Hou Brothers!!
Toramaru: Wh…what, tw….two appeared………!!
Togashi: Brothers………!?
Hakuhou: Fu…further, however I look at them, they’re an Oriental lineage…!!
153.
Siegfried: America is a country called the melting pot of races. It’s not mysterious that criminals of any race would be in this prison!!
Siegfried: No matter which Chinatown you go in throughout the world, there isn’t a person who doesn’t know the name of the Hou Brothers. That’s their true identities…………!!
Hou Kintan: Chief.
Hou Kintan: We have these words of an ancient proverb of our ancestors!! Silence invites fortune; loquacity invites disaster!!
(TN: “Loquacity”, which in Japanese was “jouzetsu”, is another way to say “talkativeness”)
Siegfried: ………Well, that’s enough. Even so, you’ll understand soon.
Siegfried: Well, can’t those two there descend quickly!!
154.
Toramaru: Mo…Momo…!!
Momotarou: I leave this to you!! This here can only be you two!!
Toramaru: Ye…yes---!! It’s…finally our turn---!!
Togashi: Le…let’s go---!!
Togashi: Do…don’t push me, Toramaru---!! Uwaaa!!
155.
Date: Is this alright!? However I look, those Hou Brothers guys aren’t ordinary people.
Momotarou: I know this: after the Tenchou Gorin Daibukai, Togashi and Toramaru have added on extra-hard training in the shadows…………!!
Momotarou: And they produce an unbelievable power when they’re a duo combination!! I’m certain that with them, we’ll do this!!
Togashi & Toramaru: Guge!!
156.
Toramaru: I…I’m Otokojuku Second-Year: Toramaru Ryuuji---!!
Togashi: Si…similar Otokojuku Second-Year: Togashi Genji---!!
Hou Gintan: ………He uses a knife? That hat man!!
Togashi: Y…you idiot, this isn’t some knife; it’s a dosu!! When I dispatch this, there isn’t a person who can appear to my right!!
(TN: I really had a hard time figuring out the expression, but it is in Japanese “Ore no Migi ni Deru Mono wa Inai”, which I translated here as “there isn’t a person who can appear to my right”)
157.
Hou Gintan: Interesting: I think that when I dispatch this too, there isn’t a person who can appear to my right. In this case, shall we test your skill with Suigousen!!
(TN: “Suigousen” = “Sharpness of a Hanging Snapping-Turtle”)
Togashi: Suigousen……!?
Hou Kintan: Don’t make this boring, Gintan.
Hou Gintan: Well, don’t say that, big brother.
Togashi: Wh…what is he doing!?
Toramaru: He’s carried out some desk…!?
158.
Hou Gintan: This is simple. We’re just going to thrust in turn a knife in the space of the five fingers of our hands that is placed on the desk like this.
Hou Gintan: But in this circumstance, we must thrust from one revolution returning to the thumb for certain.
Hou Gintan: The time we have is three seconds!! I’ll show you!!
Hou Gintan: One!!
159.
Hou Gintan: Two!!
Toramaru: He…he’s fast……!!
Hou Gintan: Three!!
160.
Hou Gintan: Well, next is your turn!!
Toramaru: A…amazing…!! It’s…as if he made the form of his hand like he struck it with a sewing machine needle………………!!
Commentary:
Suigousen…the current-limiting is in China, but it occurred in popularity as a competition of techniques and courage among people who used the skill of their fingers, primarily carpenters and tatami makers, in the middle period of Edo. Naturally their techniques used concentration power that is extraordinary, of course, and it was an everyday occurrence even in them losing their fingers. It was banned by the government upon the Meiji Restoration, but there was no end to this by those who adored this and, even in the present, there are scenes which are well seen of practice in stabbing a desk by mincing using a pen or a pencil in companies and schools.

161.
Togashi: Al—right, excellent!!
Toramaru: St…stop, Togashi: you don’t need to undertake this match----!! Wi…with that behavior, you won’t have enough fingers---!!
Togashi: Don’t be joking!! I’m not one to roll up my butt to a provoking challenge!!
Togashi: Peel your eyeballs here and watch closely---!!
Togashi: Here we go!!
162.
Togashi: Doryaa---!!
Togashi: ONE!! UO!!
Togashi: Nu!!
Togashi: TWO!!
163.
Togashi: Uoo!!
Togashi: THREE!!
Togashi: How about that---!!
164.
Toramaru: N…no, Togashi, that’s………!!
Hou Gintan: Fufu, you can’t talk. I created over a hundred holes, but, from however I see it, I say it’s twenty. With that, I’ve seen the actual battle.
Togashi: How can that be? No matter how many moves you have, you can’t defeat an enemy with the degree of power that’s the bite of a mosquito!!
Toramaru: !?
Hou Gintan: What’s that!?
Togashi: I’ll show you! The power of my dosu---!!
165.
Hou Gintan: !!
Toramaru: A…amazing, that was amazing Togashi!! Y…you opened a hole of your hand print to the desk---!!
Togashi: (to himself) It’s…decided. I’m…cool; too cool.
(TN: The “cool” here isn’t just cool but “shibui”, which has a meaning of “an aura of refined masculinity”…and we all know of Togashi’s masculine infamy by this point)
TN: You always have to leave it to Togashi to find a crazy way to turn something around unleashed by a stupid opponent. He is right though: a hundred mosquito bites mean less than ten thick stabs directly into the flesh: sure both are painful but one is more deadly even with less attacks. Strangely, though, I really don't get what would have happened if Togashi and Toramaru didn't shoot off their big mouths at the same time. Sure the Hou Brothers probably would have remained but would only one have gone out or would both have, leading to Togashi and Toramaru to go out anyway? Regardless, any fight with these two is always going to turn out epic...yeah I know I'm not complaining like I did during the Daibukai but at this point, you have to take what you're given and this is probably one of the last times they may be fighting anyway...so it's all good by me. Though...the terrors of Chinatowns does sound a tad racist but it's par for a series where the first year was mostly based on Japan's militarized propaganda.
