NYT Manga Bestsellers: One Piece Conquers Half of NYT Top 10

+ posted by soDeq05 in Manga News on Apr 20, 2010 10:37

VIZ Media has announced that 9 of its manga titles have made the New York Time’s Manga Best Seller list for the week ending April 10th. Half of the list consists of new volumes of super awesome pirate adventure manga, ONE PIECE by Eiichiro Oda.

So, how come five volumes of ONE PIECE have appeared in the list of Top 10 this week? Well, the answer is pretty simple. As njt posted before, Viz will be releasing five volumes of ONE PIECE per month, from January through June, to catch up to the Japanese publishing schedule, and bring the latest volumes of this popular series to fans sooner than ever.

“It’s exciting to see such a wide variety of VIZ Media titles reach this level of popularity,” says Gonzalo Ferreyra, Vice President of Sales, VIZ Media. “From the irresistible bite of ROSARIO + VAMPIRE, to the high seas pirate adventures of ONE PIECE, to the romantic shojo hijinks of THE GENTLEMEN’S ALLIANCE, these titles continue to show the diversity of the manga genre and its strong appeal among readers of all ages and interests.”

So, here's the list of VIZ Media Best-Selling Manga Titles (in listed order):

1. ROSARIO + VAMPIRE: Season II, Vol. 1
2. YU-GI-OH! R, Vol. 4
3. NARUTO, Vol. 47
4. THE GENTLEMEN'S ALLIANCE †, Vol. 11
5. ONE PIECE, Vol. 40
6. ONE PIECE, Vol. 39
7. ONE PIECE, Vol. 41
8. ONE PIECE, Vol. 43
9. ONE PIECE, Vol.42

Keep up the great work, Viz! =)

But individually, Naruto unsurprisingly tops One Piece here in America. US manga fanbases, in great part, have no taste. Hopefully all of this manga will help shift american attention the way it should have been for the last 6+ years (I don't think One Piece was brokenly popular more than 6 years ago, but I could be wrong).

Either that, or too many people in the U.S. want to see any lot of ecchi from a manga that is originally serialized monthly in Japan.

Why do people like One Piece so much.
I just don't get it.

BTW, that picture reminded me of xxxHolic.
The drawing style and clothing they wear.

Rosario + Vampire II in the top place just shows how perverted people in US are...perharps most audiences are geared towards ecchi? The beginning of a new age...........

And people in US don't have taste for good manga,I mean it!OP just should rule the top 5!

I always had the impression that R +V series would be somewhat popular but this is ridiculous. I'm not bashing the series since I like reading it too.

maybe its because people prefer novelty... :|

ninjas are just more intriging then pirates for most occidental person

but seriously tho the only thing ninja i have seen people in naruto do is throw shuriken and do hand signs...
or maybe its the emo stuff..

but One piece is the most populor in japan for a reason :)

ITS AWESOMELY EPIC

ps. ecchi is great

Finally. Maybe they'll start making more One Piece merchandise now. I hate always seeing Bleach/Naruto crap without any OP stuff. :(

People seem to be forgetting that the reason why One Piece isn't as popular as it should be in the US is due to the 4Kids horror that used to air on televisions across the continent. I used to hate One Piece because of that...now I love it more than any other shounen.

OP in America is just starting to speed up,
in the past years 2009 & below,OP have slow releases,
first volumes are worse,1 volume per month
question:
why VIZ is only starting now year 2010

Can someone tell me how this is an accomplishment? Or why is this even news?
LOL at the One Piece fans celebrating consider it's not even in the top rather bottom of the list, while volumes 28-38 has never been ranked, it'll be gone by next week

@ChocoBar9: Are you saying this isn't accomplishment for OP since Bleach didn't make it on the top ten sales chart?

@KayalhawK: Something similar happened to me as well. At first I was a huge Bleach fan when I read all of its chapters that were released at that time some time ago. Then I became a Naruto fan when I caught up to it after VIZ's second skip. When VIZ announced that One Piece was going to have a huge skip, I caught up to it as well. It took me about a month to do so but it was worth it. Now One Piece is my favorite shounen manga.

Now that I think about it, why is Yugioh R! on second place? Is yugioh R! much better than the original Yugioh! manga series?

I think even if it appears on the bottom of the list it's indeed an accomplishment... I wouldn't buy 5 volumes on the same month... (I would need more money XD)

I'm jealous... in Brazil OP isn't published anymore T~T
