Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

I'm currently readin Ultra Red, a martial arts manga which ran from 2002 till ???? in WSJ.

It's rather obvious it got cancelled, now my question is what Ultra Reds competition was. What other 2 (more or less) series started equally with Ultra Red.

UR has 4 volumes, it went on for at least 34 weeks, so it was not a "strike and a miss". But well, Medaka's not doing great and it's already in it's 30 too. So I guess that doesn't say nothing..

Ultra Red ran from 2002 Issue 45 - 2003 Issue 29, like you said with 34 chapters.

Ultra Red started right after AON (got axed pretty quick). Around 8 weeks before Ultra Red, there was ES21 and Sword Breaker (axed 16 chap), and another 8 weeks before it had Pretty Face and Number10 (axed 10 chap).

seems like it was on direct competition with ES21, Pretty Face and maybe even Ichigo 100% which was serialized early 2002.
Pretty Face and Ultra Red both ended pretty much at the same time.

seems like 2003 was an extremely bad year for WSJ considering how I can only recognize Busou Renkin out of 10 new series that came out that year.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

This is the number of how many times a series has had a break in an issue since their serialization . As in no chapter released in Jump for that week.
One Piece - 25
Bleach - 19
Naruto - 6
Jaguar - 5
Toriko - 2
Gintama - 2
I believe all the others have zero, I didn't count HxH and Kochikame.

Bleach has quite a lot considering how long it has been on.
OP had 7 breaks on 2009 alone, so I guess its forgivable?
Kishi and Sorachi works hard :D

Wow, Naruto really had small amount of breaks - I thought there were a few more, I'm really surprised it's so few, hyhy ^^

Hmm, yeah, I never heard of AON, but it seems it had E21 as it's rival. Being sport series and all. Too bad, I enjoy Ultra Red a lot.

But I loved E21 too! :p

Some series really need more breaks to figure out what the heck is doing and considering the long insane grind of a weekly series...but of course some mangaka can handle it better than others. (though with someone like Kubo, considering how much "nothing" happens per week, you sort of wonder what he does with those weeks)

And let's remind ourselves that Oda worked on two other projects besides the manga this year. The movie probably took a lot of his time, and Volume 0 probably took 1 week or so too.

He's much more public, he went to US, and appears on tv etc.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

After reading some past discussions I have a question. How do people feel about WSJ in its current state/line-up? Do you think it is missing anything? If so, what would you add genre-wise?

Do you feel like it is becoming a better quality magazine or weaker? Any thoughts on how it may be a few years from now when a few more long runners could possibly end?

For the past 18 months or so it has been getting better overall to me despite my gripes here and there. If they went back to giving even the lesser known series the cover more often to help get them out there and it would be close to perfection to me. As much as they may have over colored some series, they at least gave some of the newer series that started in recent years a bone more often.

I think jump should get a good detective serie, like it was already hinted in Bakuman.

But I'd rather want one of the latter one shots (with the bunny as main character) being serialised. I think with Psyren, Mago, Kuroko, Toriko, Beelzebub,... jump has introduced fresh new series which seems to have an audience who like these series but the fight for the spots is harder on the other hand (akaboshi, kagijin and who'll be next?)

I think right now, Jump's current line-up is very strong, with success of 2008 and not bad year for 2009.

And I agree with koenosaki, I think Jump should have another detective story. With the success of Neuro, I think the editors should give another try on detevtive series. Also, I want to see medical manga in Jump, but after the failure of Asklepios, I'm not sure the editors going to put another medical series.

Furthermore for one shots, I want to see Kuromitsu-sama Mairu!, SWOT, and Oumagatoki Doubutsuen to be serialized because I really enjoyed those one shots.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

hmm I don't know. I'm really enjoying the semi-new manga like Nurari, Beelzebub, Bakuman, Psyren, and even Kuroko isn't all that bad. but I'm quite disappointed by the newest series.
Medaka and Ane Doki are both so-so, and I dropped Neko Wappa, Hokenshitsu, Rilienthal and Kanata. too many comedy, and not much of a plot going on. I hope WSJ comes up with a better line-up next time.

strangely, I actually want a new action manga, since I'm tired of all the comedy, and hoping for some fresh action. getting a new detective or mystery series would be nice, and maybe even another sports to give kuroko competition.

also, I will never be satisfied till Naoshi Komi comes back :D

I am pleased for the most part with Jump's current line-up, though like everyone else I would love to see a good detective series starting up as well as some new sports series.

As for one shots, Oumagatoki Doubutsuen is a must. I would also love if the Monsters one shot got serialized, but its been over a year since it ran...might be too late.

I'll be waiting for something to surpass Naruto and One piece. Hopefully it comes along soon.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

Could be a long wait for something to surpass those two. None of the current series are even close, anything close is in another magazine. Naruto won't be surpassed, it will end first. One Piece would need to decline, possible depending on how much longer it is serialized.

The current Jump line up is okay. There are some interesting series. Other than One Piece there isn't any super amazing all time classic series. Hunter x Hunter comes close but all the hiatus are to annoying. There are better anthologies out there.

Imo Toriko is the next One Piece. It's just getting better and better and it was already awesome in the first chapter.

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

its okay to discuss Akamaru here right?
did anyone check out the Winter Akamaru scans on Raw Paradise?

I liked all 7 oneshots :D especially 1 Byô Tenshi (Mori Haruto), An-nechan Tarô (Teppei Fukushima) and Hanasaka Ikkyû (Kawada Yûya).

An-nechan Tarô, the one by the mangaka of Samurai Usagi, had a pretty nice romance/comedy. now I feel like reading Samurai Usagi (if only there were more scans)
Hanasaka Ikkyu was really interesting too, and I liked the story telling. its pretty unique, and quite witty.

Zip-per (Fukuda Eizi) and xAMQx (Ao Tojô) seemed to have nice potential too.

I hope at least 2 or 3 of them get serialized :) (wishful thinking)

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2010] - Discussion and TOC Talk

I've enjoyed Fukushima Teppai's new work. If Ane Dokii got axed (and it looks most likely), I think this work going to be good one to replacement Ane Dokii's place.

Also, Kawaguchi Yukinori tried another sport genre. I think it is not bad, but I can't say it is better than Hoopmen.

Also, Medaka and Seven Change are included with other Jump's current hit series. Is that means Medaka is safe from to be axe next, also is that means Seven Change is doing good on the ranking?
