Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Looking at the list of series from the last 18 months it is almost comical how poorly they have fared. Everything that debuted after Medaka and Before Magico is already canceled. Not one survivor. Check out this list:

TitleFirst IssueFinal Issue
Medaka Box#24, 2009Currently Serialized
Akaboshi#25, 2009#49, 2009
Anedoki#32, 2009#7, 2010
Kagijin#33, 2009#50, 2009
Wasshoi! Waji Mania#34, 2009#51, 2009
Hokenshitsu no Shinigami#41, 2009#29, 2011
Super Dog Rilienthal#42, 2009#23, 2010
Nekowappa#50, 2009#11, 2010
Shinseiki Idol Densetsu Kanata Seven Change#51, 2009#12, 2010
Lock On!#12, 2010#30, 2010
Kiben Gakuha, Yotsuya-senpai no Kaidan#13, 2010#31, 2010
Metallica Metalluca#24, 2010#41, 2010
Shōnen Shikku #25, 2010#40, 2010
SWOT#31, 2010#51, 2010
Ōmagadoki Dōbutsuen#32, 2010#19, 2011
Enigma#41, 2010#47, 2011
Light Wing#42, 2010#12, 2011
Dois Sol#11, 2011#28, 2011
Magico#13, 2011Currently Serialized
Sengoku Armors#14, 2011#31, 2011
Kikai Banashi Hanasaka Ikkyū#23, 2011#38, 2011

In the two years from issue 24, 2009 to issue 23, 2011, only three series were serialized for a year or longer: Medaka Box, Hokenshitsu no Shinigami, and Enigma. Only two series are currently serialized: Magico and Medaka. Every series that began serialization between issue 25, 2009 and issue 13, 2011 have been canceled. Every series that began serialization between issue 14, 2011 and issue 23 have been canceled. There have not been cuts that effect St&rs (issue 30) or any series thereafter.

Yes, but we should see this happen when actually St&rs has ended. We never know what will happen in future poll; we might see something that we never expected.
In four years I have not seen any series recover from such low sales and polling so low so often but it is not a foregone conclusion. Mago could switch magazines, an older series could end. That sustained Psyren for some time. But I have never seen a series that has been serialized as long as Magico recover from such a long run of low ratings.

Wow that's just...pitiful. I know it;s been a while since there was some that managed to maintain popularity in JUMP, but it;s sad that JUMP hasn;t had a surviving series since medaka box. If this funk keeps up, we may seriously see JUMP dusting off some old manga to animate or doing more reboots like with HunterXHunter

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

They've already started dusting off the old series: remember the Level E anime?

I personally think the poor run is part of the model. If enough successful manga begin over a short period (one or two years), it can become very hard for new series to establish themselves. This seems to be especially true of new action series, for the simple fact that votes get spread across more titles. As everyone remembers, 2008/early 2009 was a very successful year. Seven series lasted two years or more: Psyren, Mago, Toriko, Bakuman, Inumaru, Kuroko, and Beelzebub (Medaka came came out ten issues after Belze). And so far only Psyren has ended. About a third of the magazine came out in 2008 or the first half of 2009. Along with older series that makes it very hard for new series to establish themselves.

Looking back, late 2009-2011 looks a lot like 2005-2007. Only four series lasted two years or more: Neuro, Mx0, ToRa, and Sket Dance.

I suppose you have a point about the system since I can certainly see it working that way. Though at the rate things are going some of the established stuff is gonna need to end for new stuff to survive. If they do have to dust off something else to hold them though, I wonder what the next one will be since we had Level E and the HxH remake. In an ideal world Psyren could possibly be dusted off, but I know that;s just my wishful thinking.

That is exactly what happened in 2008 and early 2009. In no particular order Prince of Tennis, To Love Ru, Eyeshield, Mx0, D. Gray Man, Neuro, and Muhyo & Rosie either ended or moved to SQ. Some of the series longer lived series, such as Samurai Usagi or P2, from 2007 ending helped too. At some point something will stick, kind of like Sket Dance survived 2007 (the only 2007 series that lasted a full two years).

I agree something will probably stick sooner or later. With Naruto possibly ending by mid/late 2012 though, they need a new series to actually continually succeed and not just survive. I suppose they probably won;t be losing all that many readers with it ending and OP holding down the fort, but I imagine it'll still be a rough transition.

Good to see Beel back up and Kurogane as we'll figure it was going to be in for a decline but looks like it was just a one time deal for now.

Bleach dont even what to talk about itXD

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

If we're talking about old manga getting animes I'm still pulling for a Seikimatsu Leader Den Takeshi anime... (Beside the OVA from the 1998 Jump super anime tour).

Really, it's fairly rare for a new series to last a really long time in general. Sometimes there are a bunch near each other. But the other thing is when something lurks around the lower half of the TOC for a while it could last for a year or so then get canceled. Or you could say they're just ending naturally at that point, depending.

For a new series to do really well it need to get pretty high in the TOC a good amount of the time. There are the occasional Medaka and Kuroko types that eventually get animes while generally lurking in the lower half.

They talk about it in Bakuman a few times, that there are people who have "talent that only comes around once every 10 years" or "5 years" and such. The other thing to consider is that most highly successful authors will do a series that doesn't last too long, then their next series does really well. Like Zombie Powder and Bleach, things like that. So don't count the authors who got canceled out. Especially ones like the authors of Houkenshitsu no Shinigami, Enigma, or Oumagadoki Doubutsuen.

Well, people seem to like Kagami no Kuni no Harisugawa and Nisekoi so far, though both haven't been around for too long (and Nisekoi isn't ranked).

November 28th-December 4th Jump Comic Sales

*2 -- *,248,429 *,248,429 BLEACH #53
*3 -- *,130,112 *,130,112 Nurarihyon no Mago #19
*6 -- *,*87,212 *,*87,212 Beelzebub #14
*7 -- *,*85,396 *,*85,396 Kuroko no Basket #15
*8 -- *,*71,684 *,*71,684 Medaka Box #13
15 -- *,*50,300 2,783,631 ONE PIECE #64
17 -- *,*45,600 *,*45,600 Kochikame #177
22 -- *,*36,684 *,*36,684 Kochikame #999
34 -- *,*23,857 *,*23,857 magico #3
39 -- *,*20,711 *,*20,711 enigma #6
41 -- *,*19,969 *,986,182 NARUTO #58
?? -- ?????????? ?????????? Kurogane #1

The numbers above are only 3 days worth of sales, with the exception of Naruto and One Piece

Kurogane's exact sales are unknown, however it sold less than 18,142 copies.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

37 -- *,*21,622 *,*21,622 *1 3 magico #2

Magico's first week volume sales have increased by 2235 from #2 too #3, which is very small. (both volumes were on the chart for 3 days)

With the way Magico is ranking, coupled with the small volume sales and small sale increases, I think it will be cancelled with ST&RS.

It's a shame, I found the first 13 chapters of magico very charming, but halfway through chapter 14 and onwards i just completely lost interest in the series.

A Rookies adaption would be cool, the live movies have been really popular. JoJo's has never had a full anime, only OVA's if I am not mistaken. An anime for at least Stardust Crusaders would be very cool.

Psyren and Muhyo & Roji would be fun to see animated. It would also be nice to see some later arcs of certain mangas get animated (Jinchu arc of Kenshin and the rest of Neuro for instance). As for the TOC, it's good to see Harisugawa pulling itself back up in the ranking and sad to see St&rs so low. If I could choose one series to end out of all the new ones I'd pick Kurogane as I have found it rather boring. A mediocre series at best imo.

I was not a fan of either but it was kind of a shame that Muhyo and Psyren did not get anime. Psyren lasted just long enough to get canceled right around the time a manga usually gets an anime. Mx0 too, had it lasted a little longer it might have had an anime. It still seems strange that Muhyo lasted almost four years and never got an anime.

I like that cover but I am not sure why...

Must be a subliminal message or something.

Muhyo did last four years, but its tank sale was very low; I think that's why.

How come nobody's talking about Packy as a cusion that might hold St&rs for at least 8 more weeks?

Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

Tank sales do not have anything to do with getting an anime or not. Many, many manga that have never ranked in the oricon 30 or always rank low have been adapted into anime. Publishers don't even have any say in what is animated, it's a studio decision. Publishers may offer titles they want to promote to studio's, but it is ultimately up to the studio to decide whether to adapt or not. Obviously publishers can say no, but that would be silly and could offend important business partners. And no publisher would refuse to animate a title because sales are low. If the purpose of licensing a manga to an anime studio is to promote the title and boost sales, refusing to license a low selling title and potentially boost sales would be idiotic beyond comprehension. The likely reason is that there was no interest from studios, having nothing to do with tank sales. As we have already established studio's fearlessly adapt "low" selling manga to anime on a regular basis.

Pakky is a short gag manga, like Inumaru or Jaguar, no? If so it needs at least 15 chapters to fill out a volume and probably won't be canceled in time to save St&rs. If it does not poll well it would be part of the next round after St&rs.

Yes, the studio decides which series to be animated, but do you think Muhyo is a material which can bring profit to the publisher, the anime studio, and the sponsoring company? The publisher and the anime studio have to decide whether this series is a good material which they can bring profit for them.

Also, the magazine like Jump, they should also consider the popularity and the tank sales because it is highest selling manga magazine in Japan. Since 2000 series, there aren't any single series, which last longer than 1 year with low tank sales, have gotten an anime.

Other than Jump, most magazines' series are very difficult (and unfare) to determine the animation by just tank sale because they are difficult to have high tank sales, like Jump series. Therefore, the anime studios has to adopt the low-selling series which may become hit after adaptation.

They should move G-Maru form JUMP SQ 19 to Jump or Jump SQ. I think that Jump is the best option. It sold 21,226 copies in just two days and it runs in a very little and unknown magazine like JUMP SQ 19.
With a regular serialization in Jump it can become an hit. And is exacty the manga that Jump needs.
I'm very sad for Kurogane; is by far the best series of 2011.
