Re: Weekly Shonen Jump [2011] - Discussion and TOC Talk - Part 2

What's really bizarre on this cover is how Oga's and Ichigo's expressions mirror each other...Kon even makes a cameo appearance to heighten the similarity with Oga and Beel-bo.

Good cover! I do think it's a bit unfair that half of the protagonists are decorating the three while the other half are small enough to be mistaken for ornaments. Its like Jump is telling us which series are worth the pimpage and which aren't -- which conflicts with the popularity of Mago, Medaka, Reborn and Kuroko. For Beelzebub to be bigger than say, Reborn is awkward considering it was in the bottom of the TOC for the past two months.

i think it was done to reflect on whats selling the best currently which would explain why medaka and such are on the tree as decorations...although if that were the case hxh wouldnt be a decoration so i guess it could just be a random order. anyway very happy with beelzebubs ranking it seems like the training arc(s) were just being ranked bad and the current arc is being recieved well...though i am wondering why the hell its pacing is so bad now since it feels like their rushing the arc. im surprised to see gintama first im not caught up with the manga but im loving the anime currently and if there is a serious arc going on now then i hope sunrise adapts it sooner or later. sad to see mago so low but i dont think its in danger if it comes too it then it probably will be moved to SQ.

Mirror World hanging in there but will be next to go after ST&RS. Really interested in reading Pakki no scan group has picked it up yet tho sad face:/
Magico is protecting Kagami right now. Kagami has been erratic, some weeks it is in the middle, some weeks bottom five but it rarely polls low more than two issues in a row. It reminds me a little of Medaka, when Medaka was new. Because it does not rank in the bottom 5 every week and is not tournament, Jump will likely be more forgiving. Magico polls low every week, is a tournament manga, doesn't sell that well, and is old enough that Jump knows what they have. It is likely that St&rs and Magico are the next out with Kagami relatively safe. The one shots and Hunter x Hunter (assuming it is going on hiatus soon) will protect two series.

It's amusing how people were singing praises for Double Arts's sales (which sold up to 40~50k on second week), but are now bashing Magico for not selling good (Volume 3 sold 46k by week 2).

Sket Dance Vol. 3 didn't even make the list (meaning it sold less than 16k in week 1), and Vol. 4 sold 31k by week 2.

If you're going to rate how well a series is selling, try to compare apples and oranges. There weren't many first series by a mangaka out there that sold better than Magico, and many of the now entrenched series had horrible sales. In recent memory, the only thing that sold great right off the bat was Mago.

BTW, while the currently "arc" in Magico is in a tournament, but it is in no way a "tournament fighting" until 3 chapters ago. Calling it a tournament manga is like calling manga with one tournament like Naruto, Mx0, and Sket Dance tournament manga. I mean, jeez, even Beelze could be called a tournament manga by your standard.

IMO Jump will be more lenient on Magico because of its length. It will have to crash and burn like Enigma in order to get cut, and even Enigma had a lot of leniency towards it. If it continues the pattern of dipping to the bottom and rising soon afterwards, I don't think it will ever get cut.

Magico's sales seem pretty good to me too, at least for a newcomer.
It can't be called a Tournament manga, I agree with you there but it is definitely a rather cliche shonen story. There was nothing really stunning yet, the only difference would be (for me) that the story is handling the love between the main characters more agressive than most other mangas. They obviously love each other and you could even see them kissing in the last chapters.
I would rate Magico as an "okay" manga, it's an enjoyable read (most of the time) but there's nothing that makes me hooked.

Dooming Magico seems a bit too soon though, it will definitely live through the next round of cancelations as there is absolutely no sign of it ending yet.
It is pretty much confirmed that Medaka Box is going to end before april of next year
which should be around the next cancelation time. That's one more spot + you won't know how let's say Kagami and Magico fare until April, I could very well see Magico surviving if its ranks improve a bit.

The next round of cancellation probably will be around issue #11.
Issues #11, #12 are common to start new series. So probably some current series will be axed since Jump has 21 series running.

What about that information of Medaka Box ending before april? Where did you get it?

He flat out said that was his plan at the end of this week's chapter. The series does a lot of fourth wall breaking and meta talk, so even though a character said it, it probably is what NishiOshin plans to do.

I think ST&RS will definitely be canceled, aside from that I could only guess. It will not be Magico though. that seems pretty certain.

And Divinenega said it, the main villain "announced" that the Manga will end before the Anime starts (which is in April). Knowing Nishio he didn't say that just for fun, it's his actual plan and makes sense, because this definitely is the last Arc of Medaka.

If I remember one of his post correctly, for Kaiten a tournament manga is not a manga with tournaments but a style of manga where the hero evolves in RPG style, beating more and more strong enemies.

Isn't that kind of referring to every action manga. If we take that characteristics, that means One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Reborn, Nurarihyon, Toriko, Beelzebub, and Medaka Box are also a tournament manga.

Well the advanced search doesn't work anymore so I can't retrieve the post I'm thinking about so Kaiten will have to answer himself. Maybe I remember wrongly.

Exactly. Most shonen action manga fall into this area. A lot of sports manga do to and sometimes others do as well. Jump has always been loaded with "tournament manga".

The furor over Double Arts sales had more to do with fans desperately trying to find reason for it to survive in the face of consistently horrible toc position. The fact of the matter was that Double Arts was canceled a month after volume 1 came out, and while volume 1 did chart, I do not believe that sales had any baring on the decision to cancel. Canceling a series based on sales with only a months worth of data would defy common sense, canceling a relatively new series based on consistently poor TOC performance is much closer to business as usual at Weekly Jump. In truth all three volumes of Double Arts did chart, though volume two and three were not released until after the series was canceled.

While there was a period when Sket Dance polled consistently poorly, it's TOC position had much more in common with Kagami or Medaka Box. Some weeks it was low, sometimes in the middle but usually just erratic. Sket polled just well enough that Jump was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, as is not uncommon with titles that have the potential to appeal to older teen audiences.

Magico has not charted since the first week volume one was on sale. Had it been maintaining respectable TOC position this would not be a problem. The editors generally seem to take the stance that new series by new authors can take time to sell, retailer skepticism can take a handful of volumes to overcome. But they generally seem less inclined to allow a year old series with consistently poor TOC position to remain unless it has established itself as a strong, or potentially strong selling title. Magico does not poll well, nor has it polled well in a long time, but can not justify it's continued existence by demonstrating sales potential.

Magico is certainly a supernatural/fantasy/tournament shounen manga, following genre tropes fairly closely. A gruff but kind hearted early teen imbued with magical powers embarks on a magical quest, confronted by enemies or obstacles which require an increasing skill level to overcome, resulting in the hero to train body and mind if he hopes to defeat his enemies and protect what he holds dear. There is nothing wrong with a manga following these tropes, there are many recent classics that barely deviate from this path, but it is appropriate to categorize Magico with the likes of Naruto, Bleach, Reborn, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Mago, and Toriko. I dropped Medaka and Beelzebub long ago but in their early days neither had much in common with typical Jump action, even if neither were particularly ground breaking either. Medaka always had more in common with light novel tropes than manga. Beelzebub was a yanki manga with a supernatural twist, closer in plot to Crows than Naruto.

That is correct, and as I mentioned above, Magico falls directly into that genre. Tournament manga is what Jump does, as Negative Syndicate pointed out most Jump series can be considered tournament. There is nothing wrong with it, unless a series fails to poll well or chart. With so many titles that fall into the same genre, even if execution varies wildly, it would be bad business to allow one to continue that has not established itself as a fan favorite or shown any sales potential. There will always be another mangaka submitting another tournament manga; given the policy of canceling series that do not poll well there is little reason to get sentimental about a series that preforms poorly. Other genres get more benefit of the doubt: Jump has struggled to find popular comedy, slice of life, sports, romance, and ecchi manga in recent years. A series that can appeal to older teens always has an advantage, as there are always so few titles and everyone is a marketing opportunity for Jump.

Before lumping Medaka in with tournament we should remember that the ecchi and school life aspects of the story were more important during it's first six months or so. By the time any action tropes were introduced it was fairly well established, if not thriving. Beelzebub was also a popular manga long before it began emphasizing magic of fist fights.

The other question becomes: if two manga are canceled in January, what is the second? Not Kuragane, nor Kagami. Jump has never canceled new series with similar chart positions. Nisekoi and Pakki are still to new to be canceled in January, neither have reached eight chapters yet. Because of the Christmas and January double issues neither will have more than twelve chapters by the end of January. We all know that a series has to be spectacularly unpopular to be canceled that quickly, and while possible, history tells us it is unlikely. That leaves Magico as the next to follow St&rs, nothing else polls as low as often. And if only one series is canceled after the January double issue then Magico will need at least three series newer than it to drop to the bottom of the TOC before the next round of cuts.

I don't think Jump needs another comedy series since it already has two successful one (Gintama and Sket Dance). Plus, I don't think slice-of-life will work in Jump because slice-of-life is usually slow-paced and Jump is very fast. The only series that can consider to be slice-of-life in current Jump line-up is Bakuman.

The other question becomes: if two manga are canceled in January, what is the second? Not Kuragane, nor Kagami. Jump has never canceled new series with similar chart positions. You should also consider about Hunter x Hunter. It is just one chapter left until its 20th chapter after hiatus; there is a possibility that Togashi will be return to hiatus.

i would mention, that bakuman is also a tournament manga. which each new serialization, ashirogi get's better in story telling and drawing, also the antagonist are getting better. there are several battles in their toc's each week, also the typical shonen like reason for the strong will of the main hero.

I'm towards the side that Magico will stay. Despite it being cliche and so, I still think it has its chances.
It hasn't been faring that badly in the toc, sometimes it even rose quite high. And besides, when it comes to cancellation
there is still st&rs and hxh future hiatus. It's still too soon for magico to be axe'd.
