Based on the feats that Freed showed me, I agree with @Selly that he should be a S-Class Mage. Tbh, I'd say he should be S-Class and Natsu shouldn't.

Freed's magic isn't only powerful as hell, it's also quite hax. Remember the Battle of Fairy Tail arc when he tortured Elfman? Yeah, he was about to use a spell to kill him. First of all, his Dark Écriture: Pain gives him the ability to be on par with Kyôka since they both use torture magic. But this is just one of Freed's spells.

Dark Écriture: Absolute Shadow give Freed feats that bring him above Elfman and close to Mirajane's Satan Soul power level. Rustyrose was without a doubt the strongest opponent close after Azuma. In the end, he was quite easily overpowered by Freed and Bickslow, while Erza needed ultra PoF to defeat Azuma. Freed could solo Rustyrose if he didn't cast Tower of Dingir. And we all know that Rustyrose is more or less equal with Rufus.

We also have Jutsu Shiki, which is the best defensive spell that anyone from the Fairy Tail guild uses. We've seen that he can cover whole Magnolia with this spell, so the AoE is really high. Plus, he could use this for a large amount of time.

If we compare Freed's feats to other S-Class Mages:

Attack: Laxus > Mirajane > Mystogan > Erza = Freed

Defense: Freed > Erza > Mystogan > Laxus = Mirajane

Stamina: Laxus > Erza > Mirajane > Freed = Mystogan

Intelligence: Freed > Mystogan > Erza > Mirajane > Laxus

Speed: Laxus > Erza > Mirajane > Freed > Mystogan

Spell diversity: Mystogan > Freed > Mirajane > Erza > Laxus

AoE: Laxus > Mirajane > Freed > Mystogan > Erza

If someone disagrees, tell me why. No fanboying or fangirling please.

Freed is without a doubt S-Class level. I'd say he is close to Erza/Mystogan level.
I agree with everything except for the Intelligence stat, both Mirajane and Erza haven't shown display's of intelligence that put them above Laxus, no way should they be ahead.

Yeah I should switch Laxus with Mira, but I'd still say Erza should be above them. She showed me more intelligence feats than Laxus, like using water to attack Ajeel's sandbody.

That's common knowledge though, sand isn't intangible to water, she hasn't shown any strategy when it comes to fights and she also hasn't had many intelligence feats at all, Laxus' strategy/plan against Wahl >>> Erza's use of water against Ajeel. Laxus also planned the fighting festival, I know a lot of people will say that Freed planned because they think Laxus isn't smart enough to do it, but it was said to be Laxus' plan so we have to take it as Laxus' plan until stated otherwise.

People kind of underestimate Laxus's intelligence, to be honest, since he comes off as some brute that fell off the turnip truck who relies only on pure muscle, lol.

But he's shown enough battle smarts to put him above Mira and Erza, in my opinion. His strategy of using Wahl's own magic against him speaks volumes of him actually using his head in battle.

I agree with @Stormsfury. Erza is more of a counter-fighter, in my opinion. She requips armor that would be effective against her opponent - e.g. water vs. fire, speed armors against tanks, etc. That doesn't require too much brainpower, unlike Laxus who actually made up an elaborate plan that involved thinking several steps ahead of Wahl.

The only closest intelligence feat of Erza's that I can recall is her busting out her morning star armor against Ajeel's sandstorm, so that Bisca can see her through the clout. That doesn't top Laxus's ruse, though, in my opinion.

Of course, I could be wrong, though, so feel free to refresh my memory.

I can somewhat agree here. I will definitely say that you are right when you say Natsu has high attack power and low intelligence. To me, an S-Class wizard needs both but if one doesn't meet the strength requirement first, then I don't think they are S-Class level regardless of their intelligence. I mean by that logic, Levy should already be one. But the reason why I think Natsu can be S-Class is because even though he does have low intelligence, we know that Laxus is similar in a way. His raw power just compensates for his lack in thinking straight.

The reason why I rate attack and defense high is not because I like strong characters only. I mean if we think about it, what is the purpose of being an S-Class Mage? To take on S-Class missions, right? And what makes those missions different? Well, they're harder because the opponents are stronger. So basically, my opinion is that Freed has the intelligence but just not quite enough power yet.
Agreed. But Laxus still has some intelligence, while Natsu just has none. I'm pretty sure Makarov didn't made Natsu a S-Class thanks to this, since the only thing he does is destroying things.

Okay. I respect your opinion but in my eyes, anyone who is a high tier mage would be able to tank the spell. Assuming they have low durability though, I still think a decent wizard should be able to dodge it. I can see Freed being somewhat strong for a mid tier mage but anyone high tier like Kagura should destroy him.
I don't think any high tier mage could just dodge Dark Écriture: Death. He writes it on someone his body before he even knows. Only mages with a pretty high speed could blitz him before he'll cast it. I do agree with you that Kagura > Freed, because I still rank her above Erza. But Kagura could only defeat him with high diff imo.

Fair enough. I acknowledge that Freed did have to protect Yajima in that battle but Bickslow and Evergreen could have done that since it wasn't just him alone. To a certain extent, losing a 3 on 1 battle means you aren't quite at the level of your opponent despite having to protect someone. If it were a case like Simon protecting Erza against Jellal in the Tower of Heaven Arc, I would understand that because he was the only one there who could save Erza right then and there. But in this case, we have 3 decent wizards protecting only one person and I still believe that if Freed were truly that strong he would either be able to block Tempesta's attacks or tank it.
Did he even had his sword by hand? I'm sorry I don't remember a lot from that fight lol.

Hmm... I happen to think a little differently. I never was a fan of Azuma especially with the plot of the Tenrou Tree being uprooted as it powered FT because by that logic, Acnologia can just destroy it, causing FT to be doomed. But for the sake of discussion, my list would be as follows:

Azuma [With Tenrou Tree] > Ultear ≈ Zancrow > Azuma [Without Tenrou Tree] > Rustyrose > Meredy ≥ Caprico > Kain
I don't think Azuma is above Ultear, even with the Tenrou Tree. Ultear's magic can do a lot more than Azuma's Arc of Trees. In the end, it's more like a weaker version from Warrod's magic.

There is no way that Zancrow could be equal with Ultear and above Rustyrose. Arc of Embodiment is capable of a lot more than anything Zancrow showed us.

Even without Jutsu Shiki and just Dark Ècriture, I find it hard to believe that he can beat a high tier wizard. Mid tier? Sure. But not high tier. This could be because I tend to be strict and refuse to put many characters as high tier unless they have shown to be at that level or deserved it. But to quickly explain my ranking, I would place Freed around Orga's or Rufus' level. Just a little below Sting and Rogue, individually.
I'd say Freed = Sting/Rogue. Freed could defeat high tiers with a low rated speed thanks to his Dark Écriture spells.

I honestly can't agree. I mean, again, you have your opinion and I have mine but I would place Freed above Erza in intelligence by just a little bit and versatility by a decent amount.
Freed's intelligence is a lot higher than Erza's intelligence. This seems like a fact to me.

The only problem I have with this is that those attacks or spells listed were all quite underwhelming in feats with the exception of Jutsu Shiki which I would rate as a strong spell. The only downside is that it's casting time and preparation is a little long. Don't get me wrong, Freed has the hype as seen in the Battle of Fairy Tail Arc, but he just doesn't have the feats to back it up.
I disagree. His Dark Écriture showed me a lot impressive feats during the series.

Natsu's intelligence in the battle has been potrayed high. But outside battle you know what.

Well if it's about getting through the trials, I agree. The hard part would be battling fellow participants. Facing the S-Class members should be easier if Gildarts is anything to go by. He let Tenrou-Natsu through, thought his power was enough. So if you're above that level an S-class proctor should let you through.

But if it's about being an S-class, like doing missions, then what I said before stands. This would change if only a fixed number can be S-Class or something.

I don't see S-class as a meaningful power title anymore. Just like the WS. There's people who have no title that are vastly superior to those with a title.

I find it really really bad that the gods of ishgar are viewed as fodder and so many wizards that we are familiar with are viewed as many times stronger than them, we all held them in such high regard a year ago and now..........this is worst then if Luffy came back from the timeskip and could just wreck one of the admirals.

You continue to seem ignoring facts lmfao. I'm going to post this the third time now

That's all I'm going to say here. I think I've explained my points enough and they can be supported by canon material perfectly well. You keep draggng Kagura into this and many of your arguments still seem like some desperately sought out excuses to me. Here, have this panel a third time. You basically shot yourself in the foot with this statement of yours now.

He said "S-Class missions are harder because the opponents are stronger", he is still only thinking in terms of combat strength and refuses to take other things into account. Makes you wonder why the hell Levy was up for S-Class, using his logic it should have been Gajeel since he knows how to punch things better.

I think this a reasonable discussion to have as I am often one of the people who underrate/downplay/under-estimate the GoI compared to others.

I see Fairy Tail as a battle manga, and most of the displays of power/skill happen during fights. So when I do a power ranking/list I am essentially rating peoples ability in a fight. I find this to not only be convenient/easier, but it fits with how magic is used in the manga. Rightly or wrongly, I am equating the power of a wizard as the same as their abilities as a combatant. So it really comes down to this question - what makes a wizard powerful?

If we're taking magic power, or knowledge, or talent with magic, it might just be that the GoI are still superior in Isghal. Warrod summoned a tree that traveled 2000km. That's an amazing feat of magic power in my view. That probably impresses me as much as Natsu melting a lake with mere presence, or Jellal exposing the skies to prep his magic, or Wahl firing a cannon 400km. August was impressed with Hyberion's skills. I could even go as far as saying the GoI level of MP is still supreme in Isghal. So by the measure of how impressed I am with their magic relative to others, the GoI do rank highly to me. But like I said before I generally roll with combat ability because there is a lot of fights that happen.

we all held them in such high regard a year ago and now..........this is worst then if Luffy came back from the timeskip and could just wreck one of the admirals.
The power scale has been wrecked a few times and the GoI were among the casualties. I only have to think about my predictions for S12 battles before they arrived in Fiore. I remember thinking the GoI/Jura might take 3 Spriggans. Mashima obviously wanted to hype the Spriggans by having the GoI be a long way below God Serena, but I do believe he could have still maintained the hype of the Spriggans by having the GoI/Jura lose mid diff to the East Spriggan trio. With the hype of August, that would have conserved the status of the GoI and Spriggans. But we got Serena >> GoI/Jura instead.

Agreed! And even then Freed has his Absolute Shadow Mode and the forbidden Demon form (Dark Écriture: Darkness) in which he was even able to perform a take down on Mirajane. Hand-to-hand combat specialist. He just has like so many possibilities. His magic is actually kinda unfair even.

So it is okay to say that Natsu has low intelligence in general but one cannot say Laxus is the same as well? What has Laxus done to prove that he is smarter than Natsu, who you claim to have low intelligence? Everyone has a downside in their abilities. It is not an insult to say someone doesn't meet the average level for attack, defense, speed, intelligence, versatility, etc. Especially when it is the truth. Besides, not a single character is perfect. Even Acnologia has some flaws as he will eventually be defeated.

For your information, I have enough evidence to say Laxus wasn't very bright in the first place. I'm pretty sure others will have more reasons as I can't remember all of them from the top of my head, but here are a few. His solution to making Fairy Tail stronger by going to war with each other was not smart whatsoever. He even ended up admitting his mistakes which led to him being banned from the guild. Also, he attempted to use Fairy Law without even understanding why it didn't work in the first place. Hiro Mashima has already portrayed Laxus as an arrogant and stubborn character who knows no limits since he is always in denial even when he clearly cannot win in certain situations. For instance, Laxus always jumps to extreme measures without taking into account the after effects and consequences.

Even Makarov acknowledges this. So here is my point: What is wrong about saying that a character is not thinking straight? I never said he was mentally unstable or something...
Ok, I'm sorry bro, but this is ridiculous. Why are you using the power hungry reckless FF Arc Laxus to prove your point about current Laxus. Is there not a difference to you in the mindset between FF arc Laxus and current Laxus??? Do you honestly think that Laxus still thinks the same way he did back in then?? FF arc Laxus's crazy decisions were fueled by his power hungry recklessness, not his idiocy. Back then he wasn't thinking straight, but to compare himself back then to himself now is simply laughable.

I'm saying that Natsu has low intelligence because that's the way Hiro consistently portrays him for comedic purposes. It's bassically a gag in the manga. It's just that in battles, he's a genius. On the other hand, we don't see Hiro making a fool out of Laxus on a regular basis. He portrays him as slightly arrogant nowadays, but doesn't mean he can't think straight. I already showed my example of Laxus not only thinking straight, but also thinking ahead when he was in a fatal position in his fight vs Wahl. You talking about FF arc Laxus's reckless decisions isn't gonna help your argument here.

You don't need to post it again. I already saw it but I ignored for certain reasons. Because I am the type who goes by feats and not hype. If Freed's feats would show that he is S-Class Level like those words, then I would agree but that is not how it works. Like I said, Feats are the primary source for fairly ranking characters. Hype is always secondary.

This panel is no different from someone like Erza commenting on other people's strengths, like Pantherlily. Does that mean he is a high tier wizard in FT?

And I'm the one ignoring the manga? While I ignored hype, you are ignoring feats. Mirajane wasn't going to lose against Freed nor was she close to. She easily took him even mental pain as she saw her brother and her guild mates tortured. Don't even compare the two for your own benefit, because they're totally different.

He said "S-Class missions are harder because the opponents are stronger", he is still only thinking in terms of combat strength and refuses to take other things into account. Levy is not S-Class level. That is so absurd. Sure, as an S-Class, you need intelligence. But like I said, you also need a certain degree of power too and I would rank this as one of the more important ones especially since that is the trend that we see among the S-Class in Fairy Tail. Something that Levy and Freed are incapable of. If Levy cannot even beat Kawazu and Yomazu, what makes you think she could handle an S-Class mission. We already know that the highest of S-Class missions [SS-Class] is dealing with Acnologia. So stop twisting my words.

To be honest, Acnologia is far above SS-class. I'm thinking Gildarts might've just encountered Acnologia instead of the mission being about him. Many characters in FT are / already surpassed S-class.

Fine, you want feats from the current arc that proves Laxus has low intelligence? You are the one who brought up "in general" so don't blame me for it. Here:

Freed had the choice to either dispel his runes or die right then and there. So what did Freed choose? To live and at least have a chance to defeat Wahl's prototype like he did at the end. What did Laxus do? He blew up at the fact that Freed chose to let go of the shield. If Laxus isn't there at the scene, he shouldn't interfere and tell Freed what to do. It's that simple. Freed would have died had he stood still. You're totally twisting my words at this point. All I said was that Laxus doesn't think straight which he doesn't. Just look at his temper. Laxus is the type who always jumps the gun whether it is his words or action. It is known that this will eventually lead to you saying or doing something that is not so bright.
