I will disagree with your perception of Elizabeth because regardless of her "damsel in distress" status, she displays both wisdom and maturity in many situations, even in her princess incarnation. She's not just some stock standard Orihime who heals the enemy and cries helplessly. Se makes an active effort to fight against powerful enemies, supporting her allies and offering comfort for her allies when things seem grim. She fights to protect others, takes active note of enemy abilities to assist in any way she can, and definitely demonstrates wisdom and a willingness for self-sacrifice. Meliodas is toxic to her character in many respects, but definitely offers dimension considering her most selfish aspects come out when regarding saving him.Elizabeth is just Mel’s girlfriend. Doesn’t even seem to have any importance to her own clan beyond being the SD’s daughter. All she does during confrontations is cry, call for Meliodas, say she’s going to do something but really not do anything, and heal occasionally.
The only one I think is a well written female is Merlin. She doesn’t cry for others to come rescue her, can handle herself in battle, doesn’t need saving, isn’t obsessed about love, and is mostly confident when confronting most situations.
At least as long as the situation doesn’t involve. Arthur. If it involves Arthur, she melts down. But we don’t know why yet, and the reason clearly isn’t nt because she’s in love with him.
Needless to say, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Merlin
and will add that her breakdown about arthur is almost definitely based on a maternal instinct. Plus, Nakaba's handling of her inability to understand grief after such an insanely long lifetime being restored by Elizabeth's touching gesture was done with such aplomb and was one of my favourite moments in any manga series
