And I do want to know, I want to see why its a top anime acclaimed by so much people when, objectively talking, Season 1 deserves a quiet "Pass 5/10" at most in my list, and thats for the good animation.

Overlord is about a couple things.

Partially it's about loneliness. A guy whose friends have moved on in life. Shifting towards jobs, kids, and the many things people do as they grow older. So he finds himself playing a game by himself. Sitting alone in a kingdom they built together and in a the fantasy they once shared because he can't move on as they did. And now he finds himself in a whole world of it. Stuck in that fantasy. Utterly alone. Or is he? Is this a dream for him or a nightmare?

Partially it's about what happens should the things we create come alive. When the darkest fantasies become reality. The characters in Overlord were never meant to actually exist. They were created on a whim with no thought to the consequences of what would happen should they come alive and become self aware. Especially those that are created to be evil. Are they destined to be little more than monsters? In a way, they are godly beings, in another, they are children. Can they grown and change? Can they be.. better?

Partially it's epic fantasy. Momonga finds himself in a huge world where death and suffering are a daily occurrence. Can he change it? Should he? Or will his former NPCs and him just make everything worse? What is right and what is wrong in a world like that and in a situation like that? And how will those in this world view him and his former NPCs. Can he keep everything under control?

Well that was deep.

I might be missing the bigger picture, but Im quite sure the anime doesn't emphasize on those topics, at least not in S1. Maybe you got those messages since you read the LN.

Still the set up is rather boring. The fact that he has potentially nothing to worry about since he already says "Maybe living here isn't so bad, my real life was shit"... so his "adventures" in that world lack any kind of drive, I dont feel like following his story just because he's cool and gets everything he wants.
I cannot relate to him in any way and much less to the NPCs, which are total stereotypes of anime without life or even identity. They will probably get it, I can see that... but I cannot wait 3 seasons for that to happen if you know what Im saying.

And yet you made me consider trying S2, maybe not now, but I'll give it a shot one day.
