lol @ people thinking Samurai 8 will pull a RxL.

It's absolutely going to be a mega-hit, just watch.

It's just not anything special so far though. If it was the exact same but not by Kishi I can't see it getting much more fanfare than the standard new forgettable battle shounen, it's got nothing going for it besides the writer and being a sci-fi setting.

There's no way WSJ will let it flop of course but this is a pretty weak start, unless it significantly improves and changes style in a couple months I see it going the way of the Bort manga (big at first due to name alone but everyone gradually realises it's not very good and stops caring).

all late since i was at the indy500 so missed everything discussed here, oops.

-
Beast Children was epic start and my most favorite start of any sports manga even compared to my all time favorite Haikyuu!! and thats mainly because through the eyes of a third party participant we get the rewarding experience of seeing the lead character get to do something he always wanted and show the character in question what it is like to have something your passionate about and joyful over. I teared up like SOra.

Also comedy is on point and the series has tons and tons of heart, love sakura so much. SoraSakura otp.

Taisei is doing the weird thing again where as someone said you cant see what the goal of the series is. I guess its to make Sei become world champ and get rid of the constraint of changing at night time, will sei happen to come back at some pivotal end stage moment, or is he truly gone forever.Kind of defeats the title and all if he is gone

samurai 8 is still as boring as bricks.

Lol you guys are naive if you think Samurai 8 will have the same the fate as Robot x Laserbeam based on just the 3rd chapter. Did you all also predict Naruto would be a worldwide phenomenon when it started?

Higher expectations. But I've had my expectations near ground level ever since I learned Okubo was doing the art.

Though the people saying it's gonna be like RxL are indeed being hyperbolic.

Well, If weird things do you mean not to be a sport manga that always follows the same formula every time?
because then I agree, I think people put a very wrong expectation on that manga expecting a new hikaru in go, but apparently it will not be that.
And for better or for worse it will not be formulaic as beast children will be.
and also their predecessors mononofu and momiji no kitetsu tried to go the way of hikaru in go and ended up not working.

in my opinion personal samurai 8 will be an absurd success even being a divisor of opinions.
and he and the beast children are the ones most likely to survive.

All we've got to go on are the first three chapters, and they haven't really been impressive. Its basically guaranteed a 1-2 year run, even an anime isn't outside the realm of possibility, solely on name recognition from Kishimoto, and maybe the story will turn out to be great, but so far it doesn't inspire much confidence on the overall quality.

I think Samurai 8 “level of success” depends on what your expectations are.

I think the whole “initial sales will be huge because of Naruto, but will then drop off” would happen to damn near any follow series for a creator, regardless of quality. Well, only when that particular creator has been known for one thing for so long.

There are some people who have said “if it sells anything less than 500K 1st week then it’s a flop”, which is something I don’t agree with.

Pretty sure you're referring to my comment.
Maybe read my comment clearly.
I said 500k at it's peak, which isn't unrealistic at all

No debut will sell 500k at its first week.
Not even Oda's return.

Beast Children first chapter was amazing.

I almost teared up, what an emotional story and characters, just epic.

Decided to reread Beast Children because I was completely out of it when I first read the chapter and it is quite straight forward, its like the manga is following a check list. This in itself is not bad though, so far my opinion is just neutral I didn't hate it nor did I love it, have to wait more to see where it is going.

Not speaking on one specific person. I’ve seen multiple people on different forums and twitter(including people that are hyping up the series and think it’ll sell like 800K first week). I

Thinking at least 100-150k for the first week?

That would be my guess. I don’t think it’ll debut much better than any other successful action/adventure series from Jump on its debut

To the people trying the strawman argument of "Well Naruto Chapter 3 wasn't anything epic", I'll put it like this, it's not 1999. Times have changed, and Naruto's slow start isn't really acceptable nowadays IMO.

Also, I feel like, at this rate, 100k is becoming a generous expectation.

Well, Boruto's first volume did 300K in 2016. But barring that, most things don't really reach 100K in the first volume nowadays. I think mha was the last one to pull it off? At least as far as WSJ is concerned. And that was 5 years ago.

TPN did it, but it's still the exception. Meanwhile, while Boruto started at 350k...it's sales have not kept.

Do remember Boruto has these sales while also supporting a very popular TV anime.
