Yep. If Kingdom is above OP at the end of the year, we'll have to declare it an OP-tier phenomenom.

I also wonder how high will TPN get. Will It stay in the 500K a month range like MHA and HQ? Or can it go beyond that? Because that will really tell us what's the 'normal' ceiling for modern successes.

I mean, it deserves that reputation. Kingdom is awesome. It's basically the OP of Seinen manga.

This doesn't make any sense.

I hope Kingdom beats OP this year but how will it? I don't see the movie boost lasting that long (or will it?) and it obviously doesn't have an anime.

They should do a Kingdom anime reboot (similar to HxH 2011). Whether it may or may not give the manga a boost, it certainly would provide profitable merch and help the franchise grow even more.

It’s not complicated. It’s cowardice to ignore what he’s done because people wanna “separate the art from the artist”. People who wanna keep reading his stuff need to knuckle up and admit to themselves and the world that they’re happy to read a convicted pedophile’s work, as long as they like the work. It’s weaselly to hide that (admittedly gross) truth from others by wrapping it up in the same old line about keeping art, something inextricably linked to the person who created it, separate from the artist, the singular person capable of having created the specific piece of art.

Even with lesser or more nuanced crimes like Shimabukuro’s attempt to solicit a 16 year old for sex, you kinda have to come to terms with it in some sort of fashion.

My bet for end of year:

1. One Piece
2. Kingdom
3. My Hero Academia
4. The Promised Neverland
5. 5toubun
6. Haikyuu
7. Shingeki
8. Slime
9. Nanatsu
10. Kimetsu

5toubun retaining the 5th place would be magic.

I see you're not a believer in Death of the Author, Maxy. I mean, I'm not disagreeing there, I don't like Death of the Author either. I will say though, I feel dismissing Kenshin entirely because of what Watsuki did is almost as sweeping a dismissal as outright ignoring what he did. Watsuki has plenty of nuaunced thoughts and ideas separate to his, uh, unsavory side.

One thing is going after the author, but I think it's pretty ill-intended to go after the readers.

I fail to understand this. Said work is completely void of any trace of maliciousness the creator might have, and given the nature of the medium it's fairly easy to enjoy it whilst acknowledging the sick person behind it.

Starting a crusade on a work that's 25 years old and pointing fingers at people doesn't really amount to anything besides stroking one's ego.

Deciding to not officially support it or engaging with it is an acceptable position (looking at Viz) but suggesting that people should change their opinions on the quality of the work is like saying that if an athlete breaks the world record it doesn't count if it turns out that they're a piece of shit (that Watsuki indeed is).

Regarding Kenshin, when I read your comments yesterday, everybody said you found Kenshin boring, and it basically was the only old important manga which seems almost nobody enjoyed (explaining as motive that Kenshin had boring characters, boring action, and old shonen stereotypes that are boring in current day). However, almost everybody said Yu Yu Hakusho was very enjoyable. Why would that be? I mean, both YYH and Kenshin drink from very similar standard shonen tropes. I'd say from both manga the most enjoyable character (for me) was Sanosuke tbh

Meanwhile, if datamine is correct, Kenshin is getting a 3rd character in Jump Force (Saito), while Yu Yu Hakusho, JoJo and Saint Seiya remain at 2. And HnK still doesn't get Raoh :emobirb

No one is "separating the art from the artist" due to cowardice. Maybe you're not realizing that we've all already admitted to ourselves, yes we're happy to read a convicted pedophile's work.

If Shakespeare was discovered to have raped a child, do you think we would stop studying his works?

This. It's just virtue signalling and nothing else.

Kenshin is literally "rule of cool". It was innovative for its time but looking back all it did was have characters win using increasingly powerful "final moves". It's so linear that there is no suspense whatsoever. It's the same formula repeated over and over again.

Yu Yu Hakusho was at least clever. The extent of clever battles in Kenshin is like, use an explosion to blow yourself up to the hot air balloon to reach the enemy, or some guy who uses gas in his skinny body to fly or something, I forget. That's like BnHA tier, using an explosion to propel yourself forward. It's dumb smart tactics, e.g. "I'll pretend to attack from the front but actually attack from the back!"

Yu Yu Hakusho's "letters disappearing" battle was so clever man, and that wasn't even a fight, but an intellectual contest. And it was still exciting and fresh.

And even before it became a battle manga it had some great, great stories. Actually, it's possible the best stories in YYH are the ones that aren't battle ones. Even the bomb wire-cutting ending was so beautiful and that wasn't a shonen fight thing.

---

Also the characters in Rurouni are extremely shallow. They basically have three modes: "cool/dignified/mad", "happy/peaceful" and "sad/in a slump". They don't convey the full range of human emotions. Most of the time they just feel super cliche.

"It was the friends me made along the way!" that feeling throughout the whole series.

And also the author wrote in his volumes that even though things were looking bleak RnK was going to end up a happy ending anyway so all the tension was already gone lol

In this situation is interesting to point it since is surprising to see Kenshin receiving more support than other Jump titles after what happened.

BTW Rain, I'm still waiting your opinions about the Jump classic titles list I left yesterday.

Haven't read them enough to really care. Yes, I'm a Neo-Jump Era guy XP
