Like, I don't deny that. Doesn't change that there are a lot of lemmings who really liked rambling poorly written Mormon sanitised wet dreams masquerading as young adult fiction. At best, that just spells doom for Samurai 8 since it means the series will have zero growth.
Okay... but why are you expecting so much from Samurai 8 then if you weren't a big fan of Naruto? Are you self-identifying as a lemming?

No, I just thought, based on the sheer amount of hype given and the many comments from Kishi in the lead-up (some of which genuinely interested me), that Samurai 8 would at least be interesting, not a mediocre adventure manga that reads over a decade out of date.

So you bought into the blind hype even though you didn't like the mangakas previous work?
Not to mention idk why you'd expect anything other than that given Kishi only has one successful series that started over two decade ago.
Sounds rather lemming-ish.
This is where I drop this. Let's talk about Jump

I more just got intrigued by things such as Kishi's view of Samurai being entities of death, or the use of certain pieces of Samurai literature as inspiration that he mentioned in interviews.

Anyway, yeah, let's do that. Anything anyone wanna discuss?

Speaking of authors returning, I was randomly looking through Toriko volumes and saw:

See, here's my thought process on the subject. Previously, Kishi was writing week to week, and doing all of the work himself, in regards to Naruto's serialization. Very little planning was involved. He was just making shit up on the spot.

Samurai 8 is different. He's had years of planning, and he's specifically only doing the writing this time. Having to only write is easier than having to write AND do artwork AND everything else involved.

My point being, multi-tasking is harder to pull off than just doing one dedicated task. It's for this reason alone that I'm willing to give Kishi the benefit of the doubt in regards to his writing, despite not liking Naruto's writing for the most part.

Also, Kishi gets more free time now to exercise, which he admitted in an interview helps him to come up with better ideas. He enjoys walking, which increases blood flow, which he states directly improves his ability to come up with ideas. And you know what? I think that's perfectly sound reasoning. I too think better when I'm walking my dog, etc.

That's a fair response tbh.
Although I wouldnt expect much from Kishimoto regardless of what he says he's inspired by. He's a rather surface level dude. Plus he incorporates his inspirations about as well as Tabata does.
And yes. When is Yusuke Utsumi coming back?

Kishi lives rent free in you dudes heads, the last 20 pages is just s8 discussion.

At the end of the day, this series is gonna live and die on its action, thats what sells. Naruto and DB aren't well written series at all but due to their fantastic action are the #2 and 3 selling manga of all time. People don't read wsj for super deep compelling social commentary, lets see if kishi and okubo can deliver action

As a note after giving it some thought, I think Golden Kamuy is very much the future of "semi-gag" manga in the vein of Gintama. It has the same propensity for insane situations mixed in with genuine drama, tension and character development, but it has a much more serialized and exciting narrative.

Plot twist, it isn't 2005 anymore. If that sort of logic was relevant nowadays, then Bozebeats would be a Top 10 bestseller.

I meant that selling a series on action with nothing else simply does not work, since without story or meaning action is equivalent to turning on a loud horn. Arguing that Samurai 8's action alone is gonna be what sells it is nonsense.

Calling a manga a failure 4/5 chapters in is nonsense

How Samurai 8 is generating so much debate lol We changed from BC and MHA to this haha

And at this moment it's a meh series to me, not bad but not good either. Still, I'm reading for Kishimoto and to see how this is going to be as with 6 chapters, it feels like a prologue to me with much more things to be said.

People keep saying that while forgetting that Samurai 8's first volume is six chapters. I was giving the series a fair critique because the series had basically given me it's first full impression. If Vol 1 isn't good, what reason do I have to buy Vol 2?

I believe Samurai 8 will go from “meh” to really good once more characters start entering the series, and we begin to get actual villains.
I just wish the opening chapters were stronger, and hate how quick Kishimoto fans are to call it phenomenal right out the gate, but equally hate how some are giving some unnecessary over the top criticism as if it god awful.

I’m also grew up a die hard Naruto fan though, so my expections are a bit bias

But Bozebeats had terrible panelwork and confusing fights?

Only good things that came out of Bozebeats are Monks with Guns and the dragon from chapter 1.

I think it’s a bit too harsh to say that DB and Naruto aren’t well written. Well the writing isn’t particular phenomenal or great. But I think it goes beyond just great action.
I think Naruto and Dragon Ball also had great worldbuilding, great characters that readers could get attached to, great chemistry between characters that lead to fun interactions, interesting concepts and unique ideas, great sense of character design and great art, good character growths, and both had a lot of urgency.
So far I’d say S8 has most of these things.
