"It was made public on November 25th that the popular manga "One Piece" by Oda Eiichirou currently serialized in "Weekly Shounen Jump" (Shueisha) recorded estimated cumulative sales of 12,700,000 (from November 19th 2018 until November 17th 2019). It is 2019's #1 manga domestically. This manga has greatly achieved an unprecedented first print of 3 million copies for 10 continuous years and it shows no signs of slowing down. In "Jump", there's one more work, a manga that has made a steady advance. That's Gotouge Koyoharu-san's "Kimetsu no Yaiba". It recorded estimated cumulative sales of 10.800.000 copies (same time period) and came in #2 after "One Piece"."

Left the last part out. I though it would be only first print too since we've followed the numbers closely but "売り上げ" is sales, I'm a bit confused.
It seems it's circulation

The title of the article said it : One Piece: The manga that sold the most this year.
So the Oricon numbers we have been seeing were wrong?

Oh I get it. Digital + physical = OP is the best selling one
Physical = KnY is the best selling one.

Jujutsu Kaisen Serie : Volume 0-7 + Novel 1 (+ digital) : 2 500 000
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Its from 18/11/2018 to 17/11/2019. And maybe he's counting digital sales too. What Oricon does not do.
It seems Jujutsu should be 3 million when the two new volumes drop in January, these are some nice numbers.

It seems it's circulation

Maybe they use that term for circulation, I don't know.

Does the Oricon Top 10 track digital?

People who have counted may have forgotten numbers (maybe they do not have access to numbers, for example when it's not in the top 50 weekly). Or, as said above, Shûeisha added digital sales.

Also, I think Oricon is independent and do their total in terms of reported sales with them. I think I'll wait til Oricon releases their data

I highly doubt you miss three million in your counting of a series sales. Digital seems infinitely more likely.

I will wait for the Oricon official numbers because there's something really off about these 13 million copies and "just" 10 million for Yaiba when it was supposed to be at 12 million based solely on Oricon numbers known by public.

At the end of the day, Oricon's only an estimate based on sample of ~4K bookstores out of a total of 12K stores.

Can't argue against Shueisha's internal book keeping.

It's weird. I mean, in digital matters I've seen more KnY topping the charts on Amazon or Rakuten. So it should be more or maybe on par with OP's. But at the end Oricon and Shueshia are different sources. (which it's kinda odd...)

I recall reading that One Piece's young (as in teen) readerbase is actually in the sharp minority, and the vast majority of Japanese readers are people who've been following for at least a decade. Perhaps the deal is that Oricon mostly follows major book chains like Kinokuniya that young readers actually visit, and Japan's aging population is the one primarily attending the rest?

13M for One Piece? GOAT. Assuming that came from digital sales then boy did that come in clutch. Lets go ONE PIECE.

Now both sides win I guess since OP wins overall and Kimetsu wins in physical sales. (maybe bad news for those that wanted to see the shit storm :cheez)

If the claim that these numbers are reported directly from Shueisha is the truth, then Oricon's numbers don't matter anymore. Shueisha's numbers are always going to be more accurate than projected estimates.

Do they release this every year or is this the first time they write an article like this and about this? It's the first time I've read this honestly. Most of the time I see Oricon as the main reference to check sales and all that.

Shueisha is so desperate for OP to be on top that they have to cope with muh "digital sales". I didn't know Sharkbait was in charge of Shueisha's sales department.
I never understood this. They won either way, regardless if its OP or Kimetsu at the #1 spot. It's not like OP lost its feat of best selling manga of all time lol.

limited data is better than no data. understanding those limitation is far more useful than shooting in the dark guess. oricon didn't count certain distrobutor/shop (like kyoani/squere enix shop) or online order. let alone digital. however doesn't mean it's totally meaningless, as they are still good measurement for series that it main audience still buy on distributor that counted by oricon.

also same argument can be given to KnY digital sales, so :catshrug.

Yall already forgot something similar happen last year? Shuiesha released their sales figure and it was way off compare to Oricon (some has higher sales than Oricon, while some has lower sales that Oricon).

Perhap one of yall Sales Ninja can recover that infos

Thats why i said is super off, by public known numbers Yaiba is supposed to be at 12+ million so how by Shueisha Yaiba is just around 10 million and One Piece suddenly jumps to almost 13 million? it just doesn't match at all, and if it includes digital Yaiba numbers should be much higher than 10 million.

I mean that's still pretty accurate sample size... I mean just to compare, TV ratings company like Nielsen in the US uses a sample of thousands to represent millions....

In related news:

The backlogs of KNY keeps chugging in....
