Because you can not promote something as "best selling manga in the world" if it isnt best currently selling manga in the world :cheez
But it still is the best selling manga in the world..... anyways congrats to One Piece and Oda-sensei for placing 1st for 13 consecutive years

Nothing actually makes sense except if they took numbers from like end of September

If you wanna say its digital sales, how is kimetsu 1.2 million less than the oricon number which is physical only

If you wanna say its circulation. Kimetsu was 3 million at the start of the year and was 16 mil mid to late October. Already thats 13 mil, more than 10.8 mil

If you wanna say its Shueisha's internal sales numbers... then again how would it be lower than Oricon's by 1.2 mil for kny when its higher by almost 3 mil for OP

If they're counting more stores, then they're counting more stores for both so both their sales should be higher

So yeah I'm pretty much convinced its data from the end of September or start of October

Oricon's yearly charts should be coming out anytime this week or the next one. We need them more than before lol.

So we are going to start conspiracy theories now? lol
One Piece won, fair and square, please don't undermine it...
IMO It would be in Shueisha's best interest if Kimetsu No Yaiba would have won, the tankobon's would all have "Best selling title of 2019" or something, and now.. It wont have that lol
No need for Shueisha to do anything sketchy, they would be:
a) Lying to their customers
b) Paying extra taxes (For the supposedly 2+ million "fake" extra One Piece sales they put out of their hypotetical asses)
c) Shooting themselves in the foot by not allowing Kimetsu to overtake One Piece and get a HUUUUUUUUUUGE PR boost (Not that it needs it anyway).
It's not conspiracy theories really, but a lot of things don't fit. I'm almost sure that Oricon's numbers will show a huge discrepancy when compared to Shueisha's. Even when you consider a lot of situations into this, it still doesn't make any sense.

They don't pay extra taxes because this Shueisha number looks like reversed Oricon number.

That's the point. It wouldn't be able to tout that streak otherwise.

Shueisha is so desperate for OP to be on top that they have to cope with muh "digital sales". I didn't know Sharkbait was in charge of Shueisha's sales department.
If this is true, then that just shows the general incompetence of the editorial department, once again. If they're counting OP's digital sales, then they should be doing the same for the rest of the magazine. What gives? :hmm

Even though it's supposed to be a GOOD THING if a series manages to dethrone OP, because it shows Jump is in safe hands in the future. It's like they're reacting as if it's the end of the world for them.

No reports of other series? What about TPN? This manga also had a great boost and it seemed in the beginning it would have fight ops first place.

howdy,

by those number with those range:

a) If circulation:
i) OP physical only : make total sense
ii) OP + digital: possible giving how we just learn about digital sales a month ago
iii) Kimetsu physical only: the most possible explanation, since it was at 3M last year (#52 2018) and latest number is 16M ( series including digital, not counting the 20M because that should include 18 and reprint recently which are after the cutoff)
iv) Kimetsu + digital : unlikely since 16M series including digital, even if we give 2M to novels + fanbook (which is too much), that is still 14M-3M, just barely fitting it.

b) If Sales: lol nope:

if OP is digital included, why not KNY?

also, given what we just learned about Digital, top series are only doing around 20k per month digitally

Continuing on per Buranchi's request, the Twitter account belongs to a guy calling himself "Nakaji" and says he worked as an editor for Jump from 2004-2017, and then on Jump plus since 2017. He says he's worked with the following series (many I'm not aware of, sorry if I get the titles "wrong": Blue Flag, Maiden Empire, Amnesia Battery, Lycopene the Tomatoy Poodle, and Torture Princess Time, as well as the official Gintama app.

The second link was to a series of tweets that actually lead up to it, and it does change the context quite a bit. I hate that Twitter puts everything backwards. Here's the whole thing:

Which now brings us back to the original tweet, which I'mma edit a bit to account for knowing the context better:

So out of context, the first tweet made it sound like "man, Shounen Jump doesn't make much from digital sales", but in context it's more of a "damn, Shounen Jump artists don't even rely on digital sales, and look how hard we're going to have to work until Jump+ can compete with that!".

And this has been your marketing moment.

People are not starting conspiracy theories they stating that everything is quite fishy about it, specially the "10 million" for Yaiba, it's off compared to what is known so far, and in the end of the day most of people will consider Oricon numbers above Shueisha intern numbers since is the number 1 source for sales used by everybody for over a decade, so if Yaiba gets first on Oricon yearly sales what you will gonna say about it? (since it means a inconsistence and OP not winning fair and square anymore)

How does Shueisha to compare One piece's sales to the sales of mangas published by other publishers while they do not have access to their numbers...

Nope. That's the only news that is out.

If it's only circulation Shueisha's only fooling the public for no reason at all. Would they be that freaked out by OP not being the actual best seller of the year?

Okay, this is extremely confusing. Based on everything we currently know, KnY should be ahead right now. But it stands to reason that Shuiesha has more accurate numbers.

I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist, but something definitely seems off about this entire situation.

Well if Oricon says Kimetsu beat One Piece then Kimetsu beat One Piece, but as others have stated even when not taking digital sales into account it seems like conbinis aren't counted by Oricon either and I can only assume a "normie" manga like One Piece is a huge seller in conbinis...

I don't know what to say about Yaiba's missing 2 million that Oricon reported but Shueisha didn't is just weird.

But I will repeat this, Shueisha wouldn't lie about this data, in a sense it would be like tax evasion since they have to pay taxes (And authors) and stuff like that, I just don't see them lying (Either by increasing One Piece's sales which would mean paying Oda for the extra hypotetical fake 2 million or decreasing Yaiba's which would mean they are"stealing" from Gotouge/Avoiding taxes by not acknowledging the extra 2 million reported by Oricon)

2005 and 2006, so '07 was the start of the streak.

Maybe the article was delayed? Back when I did some sports journalism, the articles I wrote were held back for months before being actually posted, it's possible the report was written at the start of October, and they just sat on it until now.
