Kimagure Orange Road mangaka suffering from spinal stenosis. :(

I also have spinal stenosis, so I can definitely sympathize. I went through physical therapy and everything, and it didn't really help all that much. My doctor even told me surgery most likely wouldn't work, so I'm kinda just left to deal with it.

And ordinarily that's the best way to go about it. However, mistakes do happen. Miscommunication does happen.

These things happen even within the most official sources. Either way you fall on this debate, there's something off about the entire situation.

I still think waiting for the Oricon sales numbers is the best course of action. If their numbers match Shueisha's numbers for One Piece, but not KnY, we will definitively know that someone made a mistake.

I still don't want to cry foul about corruption like some seem to be doing. The most likely scenario is simple human error, and not corruption, in my opinion.
I think its Shuiesha who messed up or rather we're not getting the full picture. If Oricon messed up then who cares but this will be another blow to Shuiesha and call their pratices into question so while I dont think they would falsify information I dont think they're telling us everything.

I am literally shaking after reading the whole article, holy crap. How unlucky must you be to have such health problems, even before the stenosis? :mad

Huge shame to not see Izumi building up on Kimagure's success.

People used it as a source because it was the only one available not because it was the best or most accurate.

With Shuiesha you're getting numbers directly from the source with Oricon its from bookstores its affilated with its not as 1:1 as you believe since with Oricon there's always a level of skepticism but it couldn't be directly proven unless they went back and fixed it.

True. That's why we should just wait for their numbers.
I think you're really not getting what I'm trying to say.

I'm not saying Oricon numbers are more accurate. I'm saying using a consistent source is more important than having 100% accurate numbers. Therefore Shueisha's numbers are meaningless in the grand scheme of things unless they reveal all their numbers, past, present and future.

New question:

Whats the best Jump manga this year? I am just talking about the chapters that were published this year for each Manga in Jump. So not an all time ranking.

For me:

1. Kimetsu no Yaiba
2. Act Age
3. Chainsaw Man
4. Jujutsu Kaisen
5. One Piece
I only read KnY, AA, JJK and CSM from WSJ but if I had to order those
1. Chainsaw Man
2. KnY
3.JJK
4. AA
All are good tho

Pfft easy.

1. Black Clover by a landslide
2. Chainsaw Man
3. One Piece (Would be higher if it wasn't for the act 2 being so lackluster but towards the end of act 2 and onwards wano arc has been pure flames. Chapter 957 imo was the best chapter in all of OP)
4. Demon Slayer
5. Dr. Stone

Guys, I don't mind you ranking your favorite series for this year, but assuming it's a series that has over three volumes released, it's off-topic to discuss those series' specific plots, even with spoiler tag usage.

Don't forget about the new topicality rules, please. Thanks.

So, if anyone is interested, here's a periodically updated reddit post I did detailing where all the axed Jump authors since about 2014 have been and the chances of them returning. Worth reading through if you're curious, I put a lot of effort into this.

For me:

1. Kimetsu no Yaiba
2. Act Age
3. Chainsaw Man
4. Jujutsu Kaisen
5. One Piece
1. Act-Age - I think 2019 is where I truly became a fan of Act-Age, I recall writing the series off as a Glass Mask clone a year and a half ago but then I binged it and was amazed at the intricate amount of characterization and development the series can pack within one arc that takes years for an average Shounen manga. It says a lot that a manga about acting can feel more intense than the most action packed battle manga in the line up
2. One Piece - Lots of revelations that came about this year which made me more engaged with reading OP than I have been in years. Only Oda would take his precious time establishing every facet of a setting and cast and have it never be boring to read.
3. Kimetsu no Yaiba - Hard to believe that the majority of the year has been spent fighting in one location and while the series ending point has been brought to attention especially with its newfound explosive popularity Gotōge is still going about the story like its still in its first year trying everything to keep it afloat. The series remains as confident as ever.
4. Boku no Hero Academia - When Hori said last year that 2019 will be a big year for MHA he pretty much stuck by his word. What a turbulent year for the manga and the fanbase that had the internet ablaze for several weeks with one chapter and then lit up again with next. All eyes were on this series this year for better or for worse but it certainly was a trip.
5. Chainsawman - This series had me twirling my thumbs in anticipation just waiting to see what Fujimoto will do next and each and every week I had the exact same response;

6. Haiyuu - Admittingly I wasn't nearly as engaged with the matchups this year as I still can't pretend I care about Nekomata so given that half of the year was dedicated to them didn't thrill me with much excitement but man that final matchup and the aftermath hit me like a brick and with the series ending all but confirmed its going to be tough saying goodbye.
7. Jujutsu Taisen - A bit uneven this year despite the strong start last year, yes for a lot of people the flashback came out of nowhere as with some character interactions that could have been delved further to have more impact but the series still remains an engaging read especially for its choreography which is currently the best in the magazine. Its looking to finsih out strong this year.
8. Mission: Yozakura Family - Would essentially be my favorite new series of the year if Chainsawman didn't start at the beginning of the Jump fiscal year. Gave this series the cold shoulder especially given how "bleh" Poro was but it really came together as it went on.
9. Dr. Stone - This series is definitely like a rock, it'll never be in the upper echelon of the magazine for me no matter how many times Nakano pushes it but its a reliable sit through that I can always get something out of even if is just a rock "practical yet incredibly sturdy"
10. The Promised Neverland - The most positive thing I can say about Neverland this year is that it wasn't as bad as the stuff not on my list and that's it. The series went from a thrilling page turner in its first arc to the most boring predictable sleep-inducing manga on this list. Things looked like they were picking up but then it dashed away all those hopes in one sitting just because Shirai seems to be in a rush to complete it but now sharing the same sentiment and want this to be over already.

Regarding Izumi Matsumoto's condition, I had heard of it, which sucks hopefully he gets it... @Buranchi hopefully yours gets better too, though you, yourself, said it probably wouldn't.. :/

Anyway, reading ANN article (And from the Kimagure Orange Road Kickstarter that DMP did a couple of years ago) it seems as if Matsumoto doesn't really have that much money? In the article it's stated that one of the reasons Matsumoto is scared of the surgery is because it's expensive.. Sure, I guess most surgeries are expensive but, it makes me wonder just how expensive of a surgery that would be that it makes Matsumoto consider it expensive...

According to easylove'sTop 125 best jump sellers KOR sold around 20million copies..
And each Tankobon is sold at around 440 (IIRC tankobons were less expensive, they get a bit more expensive with the passing of time... But let's say when Kimagure was being run in Jump tankobons were sold at 350 Yen)

So 350 Yen x 20'000,000 copies of KOR= 7'000,000,000 Yen (Or roughly $70'000,000 USD), which is the total revenue from the series and supposedly the authors get a 10% cut of Tankobon sales (Some get a bit more, but let's just assume Matsumoto got a 10% cut), that would mean Matsumoto got around 7'000,000 USD for Kimagure Orange Road just from its royalties.

Not counting Anime sales or even taking into consideration Kimagure Orange Road worldwide sales (The series was broadcasted in different european countries during the Dragon Ball era, so I can only assume printings of the manga/ sales of merchandise are at least decent).

So yeah, I know Tokyo is an expensive city and apparently he stopped drawing manga in 1999 because of his condition, but even assuming he spent $100,000 USD a year ever since he finished KOR (1987, so 32 years ago) that would still be $3'200,000 he has spent.. So Idk something seems off, maybe he overspent Idk.

In terms of supporting series I bought in person Neolation vol 1 and Higuma vol 1. I'd show pics but they're in my HDD back home

Also managed to get 2/3 Gintama Gigas and the first 3 Chainsaw tanks as well as KnY GODjima tank.

Gonna get JJK new volumes ASAP

Welp told you all not to underestimate OP's sells. It's not one to take lightly especially we hitting inner levels of current arc that keep getting better. I do agree in human error happening on Oricon, but not Shueshia since they are the ones in charge of both series. Shueshia would know more compare Oricon which is more estimation on what they think than actual know. Doubt it's some 'corruption' or anything the sort few are trying to force.

If Shueshia didn't want their top series surpassed than why didn't they stop OP after surpassing DB. They can allow change especially if it's legit on popularity and sales. Doubt they did something to DS to prevent it be. Human errors is common thing as one mistake can affect a lot in this type of business. Shueshia hasn't state anything it's their side and while Oricon hasn't either, it still they estimate more than have true numbers unlike Shueshia.

Also not hear to brag or anything. Just that we shouldn't underestimate OP as thus isn't first time a series come to try to surpass it, but didn't like AOT, Kingdom, etc.. Just saying respectfully.

Weird comparison since DB had already been finished for over 2 years when OP started, let alone when it got bigger than DB, unlike OP and KnY, which are both running concurrently.

Funny how your last paragraph contradicts everything you said about Oricon errors.
We KNOW one piece beat AoT because of Oricon number. They have two different publisher, Shuiesha should not have that information on how much AoT sold.

So one could say Oricon made an error on those 150k difference and AoT beat One Piece.

And how do they know it’s best selling manga for “13 continuous year” (Well not yet since this year Oricon hasn’t published yet)

ding ding ding Oricon number

so as everyone has been saying, just eat sleep and wait for Oricon number

Talking about sales as even after ending, DB still racking up sales of manga around 250-300 million currently. It was their first flagship and if they didn't want OP to be on it's lol, they would have stop it before becoming what it is. Just saying using the argument for 'biased' they can't have their flagship be surpassed doesn't work if they let OP surpassed it and give everything if not more than DB on what it become.

Why bringing AOT in this? We know OP beats it. Nit saying Oricon is always wrong, but neither is Shueshia as well. Both have errors in the past, so you can suspect both. Though if Shueshia just boldly send out the sales worldwide for all to see despite Oricon said, don't think they got wrong numbers as that be embarrassment to the company for that. We got look at all contributed to sells on reasoning overall. Not saying DS didn't do good as no doubt cones in #2 place this year, but just not beyond OP's sales if we looking at factors.

....So you admit Shueisha has made errors in the past, but that somehow makes them right...somehow?

Also, why're you brining up Dragon Ball when One Piece debuted two years after the final chapter of the former? They literally were not competing internally because Dragon Ball was presenting zero market dominance. Because, you know, it was finished.

Like your ignoring Oricon errors and think they are right as well all the time too.

It doesn't add up for Shueshia to go this scale if they had it wrong that much. They don't overlook that much when they have errors.

Kinda were as DB is insanely popular and sales still add today. Again they let OP surpassed it with no problems. Doesn't make sense they are biased to DS when both are from same company. What's the point of hurting your own? Not like them since in the end they get more money.

i guess Shuiesha is run by idiots who printed 16.5 million copies (this number is fact released by Shuiesha btw) for Demon Slayer for it to sell “10.8” :derp

Imma just wait for Oricon, we just going in a circle.

as choco said, oricon number (if demon slayer beat one piece) will also be an absolute shit show, people will choose the source that fit their narrative.
