Well, if Oda thinks he was beaten...I don't think there's much room for argument.
Maybe Google Translate is doing a bad job again, but I don't see anything about Kimetsu ranking first? The article only mentions that Oda feels Kimetsu's huge momentum. In fact it looks like he's thanking readers for OP ranking 1st in individual volume.
What does it says?
Shueisha fueled it for sure but if you have ever followed manga sales for a long time now, there has always been a small community of people that wanted to see OP fans rage over the fact they have been dethroned. It was there when AoT was close to beating out OP in series sales (in all honesty it should've since it was the closest to OP's volume sales). Like I said before both sides can get equally toxic.I think we can blame Shueisha on the sudden bad blood. Everyone already accepted Kimetsu would be 1st this year, then Shueisha went and dropped the bombshell with their own numbers, effectively sparking a feud between OP fanbase and, let's be honest, people hating OP.

To be fair he doesn't really say anything about the 1# total ranking only in 2017 when it was for 10 years at being 1# did he have something to say. The only other times in which the rankings made headlines was when Attack On Titan beat in in half year sales in 2014 which had the author go on twitter and thanking everyone for support. This is just a matter of time for Shueisha to deliver a clarification. But if Oda is thanking Oricon for the 1st place on single volume sales, then that's it.
He would have celebrated the first place in annual ranking but he hasn't or sent a message about, even from shuesha statement.
I don’t get this. if Oricon's numbers are that unreliable, why would Oda thank them for the 1st spot for single volume sales anywayRough Google Translate of Oda part.
"Recently, many people have told me that Jump is now interesting. Of course because of the excitement for “Kimetsu no Yaiba”, and young artists are also enthusiastic about Jump! ! Naturally, me too! ! I hope you will pick it up. Thank you for the 1st place for the single volume sales! I'm honored!"
It's almost as if Oricon is considered reliable by the industry, and we've just been running around in circles because of misinformation and poor reporting.I don’t get this. if Oricon's numbers are that unreliable, why would Oda thank them for the 1st spot for single volume sales anyway
