I think you guys are being a tad optimistic about S8's chances. While undoubtedly the series has been able to dodge a few elimination rounds due to circumstances, at this point it's stuck at the bottom of the TOC, with virtually no promotion and a clear sales decline. It seems pretty certain to me Jump's punishment of it is just a matter of time.

The current bottom is a complicated case, since the TOC has fewer series than it should have.

When the new series (at least, Zipman and Agravity Boys) begin to be considered in the TOC, we can have a better perspective.


Also, it does not help that the position of Samurai 8 in the TOC does not necessarily fit perfectly with sales.

Samurai 8 has "disappointing" sales, but these were a lot better than Kamio Yui. However, Kamio Yui was usually above in the TOC.

It was just one, all the 4 series of that batch were published until chapter 27 at least and were replaced by the current new series, so Samurai 8 didn't really dodge much yet, just naturally survived among the other 3

Overprinting and overpromotion were two common complaints about the first two volumes of Samurai 8, so it makes sense that Shuiesha is toning things down and seeing how Volume 3 performs on its own. This does not mean that Samurai 8 is being put out to pasture, and it does not mean that anything is “sealed”.

We really should see how it performs after more than a single day before jumping to conclusions.

I think we don't even see how Volume 3 of Samurai 8 performs in a single day, since we haven't seen the Shoseki ranking yet.

Excuse me, Sunday promotion is horrendous. How about you go to Sunday thread and see it for yourself.
I guess s8 is in the same situation as Claymore auhor's manga on Sunday, just crawling till its "natural" end without a single care from manga buyers.

Now now, Gun Blaze West wasn't exactly Watsuki's fault. He had been put under heavy pressure to return to Jump after Kenshin ended, and was left scrambling to format a series in just a year. By the time serialization started, the only stuff he had were the protagonist, and basic setting.

Shoseki's updates have been so late this week, there's no chart from January 2nd through the 4th yet. I'm afraid we won't even get the one on the 4th soon since we're close to the weekly ranking's release and the daily ranking tends to be late on Sundays and Mondays.

I guess s8 is in the same situation as Claymore auhor's manga on Sunday, just crawling till its "natural" end without a single care from manga buyers.

I follow that thread for a long time, this is why i joked about it, because despite some authors even mocking Sunday for the lack of "advertising" the magazine still give at least a color page to advertise a new volume for most of the series, something that Jump don't even do for S8.

Ok, 01/02 just got released and it looks real fun. For several days now, a bunch of WSJ titles (more specifically OP, MHA, TPN, JJK, AA, CSM and Stone) received some sort of a boost to their backlog and a lot of their volumes have risen in the chart. The most apparent one is MHA that put almost half of its backlog within the top 100 and the entire backlog is within the top 200. Also, volume 25 also has been pretty stable for almost a week now, it's only behind a few newer releases and KNY's backlog. TPN looks really nice too with every volume but one being within the top 150. The most amusing placement has to be OP 94, which has been around the top 30-40 for a while now. This week's Oricon is going to look fun.

Decent-ish sales doesn't necessarily mean it'll stick around, Robot x Laserbeam started off with much higher sales than S8 but they shrank every volume and it hung around in dead last, and eventually WSJ cancelled it. If S8 similarly shows negative growth in the next couple volumes it's going to be at risk no matter what space they've got in the magazine (heck, if they're letting every new series go past ch 20 maybe it'll be even more at risk, since it means that some batches might be low on stuff they can end).

Lower sellers that are growing each volume can gradually become big series (Kimetsu and Act-age weren't exactly instant hits for example), but a decent seller that drops every volume doesn't have much hope (especially in S8's case when it got all that promotion with Kishi's name behind it and still sold just okay).

But were the numbers of the week that went from the 23rd to the 29th posted? I’m guessing I missed them?

To clarify, the sentence has Tsutsui say the series will be "rounding up" to 20 volumes. So I'm not sure if he's referring to planning 20 volumes, or is just exaggerating by saying he would round up to 20 because he's now in the upper 10s.

We Never Learn volumes have 9 chapters, right? Which means vol 15 should go up to ch 132.

Last chapter was 141 which makes up vol 16, so about 20 volumes would mean 30-40 chapters more probably. I can see it getting that much out of wrapping up all the stories and relationships and doing some epilogue stuff. That gives WSJ more time to find a new hit romcom to replace it (and Yuuna), hopefully they can get something.

It definitely won't beat Nisekoi but it'll end up in the top 3 longest romcoms at that length. The real question is how long Yuuna's planning to keep going on for.
