Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Yes, it is.
This whole pilot mini series concept seems like such an overkill and wasted effort to me. Wasnt Jujutsu the only one of them that didnt end up flopping anyway? And that too ended up being a canon prequel instead. I don't see what more this has to offer over a simple one shot in the other cases.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Not even the winner of that year, Masaoki Shindo, published something yet kkkk
It only took two years for three of the 2016 participants to get serialized (Jujutsu, NeoLation, Seiji Tanaka). I wonder what all the rest are up to and why Jump didnt have one last year (no quality submissions?), because they sure are going to need new talent this year, but they probably already have them lined up.

You only need Jujutsu Kaisen to explain why, the fact that a short series lately became a popular series with potential of being a big hit is more than enough to make Nakano and the editors keep doing it because you never know if you will find your next hit in one of these short series, it also works as a experience for new authors.

They might need that new talent a lot more now due to all the series that are about to end.

For anyone interested, Raven Burai Chapter 1 raws are out (new digital Jump only series), thanks to Funky from WSJ Discord.

I'm glad the art style seems to have improved since the oneshot. Conceptually, it wasn't too bad, but also doesn't seem like anything super amazing either.

There are some really good action scenes in this first chapter, at first the art can look generic but the double pages are quite good.

Anyone got a decent hypothesis as to why Mitama is sinking in spite of good reception from readers? Because I'm on the verge of declaring gag manga as a genre cursed.

Ehh, you never get tired of this "gag ain't popular anymore" Rain? it just didn't sell like people thought would based in their personal opinion, the manga still not in danger, when you keep pushing these things it gets annoying really fast.

Be that as it may, do you think the artstyle hurt the series?
As long as the art compliments the humor, its fine. Saiki's art was barely good. But it complimented the comedy quite well.

Maybe its because those readers you speak of are the only ones buying the volumes :derp

Eh. Jump has many failures every year in a wide variety of genres. Does mean the genre is cursed.
Probably means that particular series isn't what people are looking for.

The JP readers are all saving their money to make Agravity Boys the first gag hit of the new decade :derp

Here is something I just thought about.

There is a lot of myths and conspiracy theories about Jump/Shuiesha forcing series like Naruto and Bleach to extend past where the creator initially planned on ending the series.

This made me think of Pokemon. I know that with Pokemon, a lot of the times pushing back the video to work on it longer isn’t an option. Because Pokemon is a huge franchise, beyond the games. So pushing back the new game means also pushing back the trading card game, the anime, the toys, etc. redesigning Pokemon designs and adding characters could screw up the merchandise Pokemon company already has made.
Game pushbacks is a huge reason why Pokemon has that Orange Island “Filler” arc back in the day.

It makes me wonder if, belond Shuiesha, the television companies and producers pressure series to continue. I know they go through a lot to book and hold television spots, and consistent knew content to the series puts a lot of money in these company’s pockets. You’d imagine it’d hit them pretty hard when a series just stops

I had planned on buying the first volume of Agravity Boys anyway, but if they uncensor the fan letter page of Chris, on my honor I'll buy a second.

Tell that to the Pokémon fandom. Seriously, SwSh is honestly just a byproduct of this whole thing. Franchise is so big the games don’t matter as much anymore. The vast majority of Pokémon’s gross comes from merchandise, and it’s no contest.

Either way, I’m betting that this is absolutely the case. IIRC, there’s almost always a list of production companies funding each anime so they can profit off of the brand in their own way, from who has the biggest stake to who has the smallest. These production companies can range from the studio to the TV network the anime is broadcast in. I’ll try to pull up some examples later.

I think that ultimately what makes an anime successful is a weighted average of how profitable it was for each of the companies involved.

Now i'm wondering, are they gonna give Agravity the Yuuna volume treatment? Considering that the censorship was the joke itself, I wouldn't imagine it being uncensored.

They're probably just going to remove the "Send a message" text, in other words nullifying the joke all together.

I’m just realizing Dragon Ball Super Broly grossed $125 Million worldwide.

Is this the most successful movie release from a Jump property
