Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I've been thinking about the Future of WSJ and it doesn't seen so good. Hear me out and share your thoughts.

Kimetsu and TPN, two of the biggest series in the magazine in terms of sales, are very likely ending soon. Haikyuu is in it's final arc.
Also, Dr. Stone and Black Clover sales have been dropping right?

They still have OP and MHA for the foreseeable future and I can see Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man becoming pillars of the magazine, but outside of them none of the other series look like a hit.

Act Age is great but it's still not a genre that many people like. Everything else looks mediocre (in terms of Future Sales, not quality), with the exception of maybe Mashle and UU, but gag manga can only go so far. This last batch don't look that great either.

What do you guys think?

Dr stone is slowly increasing but who knows if it will keep the trend till the day it ends.

As for the future, it will depend with the upcoming batch. For the moment, only csm and jjk are likely to become the next pillars.

The same thing happened in 2016, where multiple big seller ended, the magazine still doing fine

Yuuna early boomer
Demon Slayer was a late boomer, sales doesn't trend upward until volume 4/5
Neverland doesn't reach 100k/volume until volume 2, and i think it's the only one that manage 300k+ after MHA before anime (correct me if i'm wrong)
We Never Learn sells normally but it isn't Nisekoi level
Act Age also a late boomer (400k by volume 4)

By the end Yuuna, Demon Slayer, We Never Learn all reach 1 million circulation by volume 6. TPN is 1.5 by volume 5, JJK reaches 1.1 by volume 2
So give these new series time to grow, and physical copies will be low during this quarantine period.

--------------------
Tinfoil hat time

I think in the next year or two more and more J+ series will start selling more than the middle batch of WSJ, whether it has more people reading on the platform or big word of mouth, it doesn't matter

The elephant in the room Spy x Family
Jigoraku manage to hit the benchmark of 1 million in circulation by volume 6, despite being on J+
The Yamcha manga manage to hit 240,000 copies in print with just one volume

Act Age is great but it's still not a genre that many people like.
What genre are you referring to, drama? Or are you talking about the subject material? Glass Mask and Skip Beat are two very popular acting series in Japan so there's no reason that ACT-AGE can't grow even more with an anime adaptation and future advertising campaigns (heck, it hasn't even hit its pre-anime peak quite yet unlike Dr. STONE which stagnated for a while before now).

The same thing happened in 2016, where multiple big seller ended, the magazine still doing fine
This! Sales wise, WSJ has a promising slate of newer series that are slowly finding their own niches, we just need to wait and see. And even then, we should keep the entire industry in perspective. WSJ is a sales giant. Other magazines have their big successes but nowhere near the same concentration. Even if the magazine goes through a period of lower than usual sales, it will be fine, especially as long as One Piece is still running and series like JJK and Chainsaw Man keep growing.

I got curious so I compared how many not-yet-established series WSJ had at this time in the past few years (hits bolded, semi hits italics):

2020 - 9 new-ish series not established yet (unless a current one gets cancelled) - Yozakura, Mitama, Agravity, Undead, Mashle, Guardian, Moriking, Bone Collection, Ghost Writer
2019 - 7 new-ish not-established series - David, Japan, ne0, Higuma, Kamio Yui, Last Saiyuki, Chainsawman
2018 - 6 new-ish not-established series - Lycopene, RxL, Ziga, Noah's Notes, Act-age, Jujutsu Kaisen
2017 - 8 new-ish not-established series - U19, Poro, Hungry Marie, Dr Stone, WNL, RxL, Spring Weapon (semi-hit), Samon (cancelled soon after april)
2016 - 5 new-ish not-established series - Samon, Dance Club (a year old at that point), Yuuna, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Mononofu
2015 - 6 new-ish not-established series - Ageha, Gakyuu Hotei, Roggy, UBS, Kagamigami, Black Clover
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

So there's more space filled by at-risk series now than right after the huge batch of 6 new series we got even, and that group includes Samon which was more than a year old so there was 7 series under a year old.

2016 April was a really strong line-up looking back at it, every single ongoing series became at least a semi-hit except Mononofu, and even that went up to ch 40.

Since FFVII is back in mainstream spotlight, am I the only one hoping we eventually get a Final Fantasy-esque manga in Jump? If properly written, I think a series could be a huge hit. I think the closest we had was Demons Plan and D.Gray-man although DGM didn’t start going into more FF territory until long after it was gone from Jump.

Always been a sucker for fashionable character designs and tragic romantic plots.
Double Arts says hi

Zombie Powder & Busou Renkin had FF-esque aesthetics too

and more recently we had Tokyo Shinobi Squad which had FF7 cyberpunk like world

....I am extremely confused by all of these examples.

Especially TSS. Literally it just had a stock cyberpunk setting, unless you think FF7 invented that in Japan.

I think is kinda futile thinking about WSJ's future, kinda like how Nintendoomers always said Nintendo was gonna fail..

Think about it, Jump got super popular during the 80s thanks to series like Ring Ni Kakero, Arale, Captain Tsubasa and Kinnikuman.. Those eventually ended and sure other Jump anime never got to the heights of Arale (it had like a 36% at its peak rating back when it was aired, and as said by other users made the manga sales Jump from 3 million to like 15 million with only 6 volumes!)

Other main stays of the magazine continued like Kochikame and Jojo would start serialization later, along the way mangas we consider classic today like Hokuto No Ken, Dragon Ball, Captain Tsubasa, Saint Seiya began and ended their serialization, these are manga that shaped generations, not only in Japan but outside it. Think about it, when Dragon Ball ended no one would have thought there would be a manga that would surpass it.. While maybe not internationally or in widespread success outside Japan, we now know the undisputed king (Talking sales here, don't want to start any arguments) is One Piece, but back when DB ended.. People probably didn't think anything could even be close to it in sales/popularity, and yet One Piece started serialization just one year after Dragon Ball ended.

Back in the 90s YYH, Slam Dunk and DB all super successful hits finished within 2 years apart of each other, and sure magazine sale dropped but then Jump got One Piece, BLEACH and Naruto within 5 years of those series ending (Along with a lot of very powerful properties that still run to this day like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Prince of Tennis, AND with other great and best-selling series running like Shaman King, and of course Hunter x Hunter which)

The 2000s brought us other big series like Gintama, Reborn, Death Note, Haikyuu, Assasination Classroom, Kuroko no Basket along with other best selling manga, I'm just skiming through 20 years of manga in WSJ, but those are the ones out of the top of my head...
Beelzebub, Nisekoi, Toriko, Assasination Classroom, Naruto, BLEACH, Kochikame, Kuroko No Basket all ended between 2014 and 2016, two years apart from each other. That's 8 manga and not just any manga, it's pretty much the biggest series Jump had in 2014 half of its (most successful) line up gone in the span of two years.

Jump sure seemed in a crisis back in 2014 with both BLEACH and Naruto reaching their endings (At least me and lots of other users assumed so).. And now we have Kimetsu No Yaiba that's literally breaking every record possible, a feat that just a year ago no one suspected would happen and certainly not by Kimetsu No Yaiba.

The beauty of this is that every series that has shaped Jump, a "pillar" of Jump if you will, has reached new heights in different "ways". It's kind of like a baton pass in some sense.

Ring Ni Kakero solidified all the "Jump cliches" and ignited the magazine's popularity (Jump circulation in 1974 was 1.65 million, during 1977 (the year Ring Ni Kakero started) was 1,8 million (So in 3 years it had "only" gained 150,000 new readers... :/), its circulation in 1980 reached 3million, almost a 100% increase in the span of 3 years during Ring Ni Kakero's popularity peak.
.
Dr. Slump perhaps the biggest Jump anime (According to TV ratings) achieved something only that series did which was get the most popular Jump anime which even lead to the wildspread use of the N'cha greeting used in the series (this was in the 80s of course probably no one does it nowadays lol).

Then Dragon Ball came and funnily enough you could argue that both series pretty much had the same level of popularity in Japan (Manga sales per volume reflect on that) but outside Japan Dragon Ball did something probably no other series will ever do, which was shape an entire generation across the globe, something that I don't think can be repeated now a days, at least not for an anime, there's no one in my generation here in Mexico who doesn't know who Goku, Seiya or Oliver (Tsubasa Ozora from Captain Tsubasa), this happened pretty much in every country, except for english speaking ones... Weird... I know for English speaking people is hard to understand, but I'd say is similar to how everyone knows who Mickey Mouse or the Simpsons are, but the level of attachment people have for these characters is way bigger than that you have for Mickey or the Simpsons I'd say haha.

Then One Piece came and it outsold Dragon Ball, but that's not it biggest merit, I think. Sure magazine sales have declined over the years, that's expected, paper is dying but One Piece not only thrived but succeded and became the most epic story of all time, Ok I may be exaggerating but to me it is lol, I guess One Piece achieved being the best selling manga ever, but I also do not think that's it biggest merit, I think that perhaps One Piece has not yet reached its true final "merit", think about it, it's very close to beat Batman in sales, then there's Harry Potter (500million copies sold IIRC) and then Superman with 600million... So perhaps One Piece will get to be the best selling literary fiction of all time? Who knows.

Then we have Kimetsu No Yaiba... Yeah.. Ummm.. I guess I don't really know what to say about it other than it proves that NPC mentality is a thing lol.. /s
Yeah I'm being salty but meh,

The fact I didn't even mention Shaman King, Hunter x Hunter, Rurouni Kenshin, Dai No Daiboken or any other romance manga is proof there are and will be too many popular series and from different genres that appeal to different readers.

A decline in print magazines is expected, but I think there will still be manga that get crazy sales... But Japan's population is slowly declining, so who knows.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Other example is when I finished watching FRIENDS I though heck.. I don't think there's a show that I'd love as much as this one and then I watched How I met your mother, and I liked it just as much if not more than FRIENDS (again, no arguments here it's just my opinion) but then HIMYM ended.. And then I loved Community and now I watch Brooklyn909 which is fine lol.

Same for drama television, back when Breaking Bad ended I thought.. Yeah nothing is gonna be better than this and then came Game of Thrones which for a long time was great until... it wasn't.

Point is there will always be new and exciting new things to read/watch :)

I already said they have a similar cyberpunk world

TSS first color page vs FF7 cover art

....I am extremely confused by all of these examples.

Especially TSS. Literally it just had a stock cyberpunk setting, unless you think FF7 invented that in Japan.
the original post "Always been a sucker for fashionable character designs and tragic romantic plots "

Double Art matches that description pretty well

then I gave the examples of Zombie Powder and BR which also have fashionable character with giant swords

and after that I gave the example of TSS while limiting my comparison between FF and TSS to the world

what are you "extremely confused" about?

Boruto anime will be suspended (indefinitely) next week, they will rebroadcast episode 1 instead. I think for BC they will announce it properly in this week too.

I love how in the midst of this giant ass attempt to say there's "nothing to worry about", you still feel the need to tell people you're bitter about Kimetsu winning and insult the fandom by claiming it's the "NPC mentality".

Class act, Senor Peroloco.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

So 2010-2011 One Piece was also NPC mentality for the new generation, got it. Thank you for the insight.
You see how stupid this comment is?

You know speaking of sales, it took one piece 4 years to reach 54 million copies
300,000 circulation copies first volume 1997
6,000,000 circulation copies 1998
17,000,000 circulation copies in 1999 (anime begins airing)
37,000,000 circulation copies in 2000
54,000,000 circulation copies in 2001

40 million plus after 2 years of anime airing

Kimetsu got 40~45 mil (maybe more now) in under a year after the anime aired.

So by your definition isn't One Piece also have NPC mentality?

Before you say i'm biased toward Kimetsu, I don't even read the series. I know all the memes/spoilers/nezuko (kek), my favorite Jump on going series is One Piece

If any, it shows that "As long as the possibility is not 0%, anything is possible" - Hiruma Yoichi
You have the Pirate King that dethroned Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk, and now you have the Jump Slayer that dethrone the Pirate King. In 20 years there will be another that may break its record

tldr: celebrate the success, not downplay it

There are plenty of other things from other mediums that have managed to be successful thanks to the "npc mentality".

I know you said you're salty about it, but you just can't downplay someone's success maybe, just maybe because it beat your favorite series yearly record.

Someday there will be another series that will beat KnY record, as well as op. So nothing will last forever or think it's just this series record and none will touch it or beat it.

(sorry for mentioning snk lol, it was the first thing it came into my mind).

I already said they have a similar cyberpunk world

TSS first color page vs FF7 cover art

They don't look very similar, TSS's city matches typical cyberpunk more than FF7's Midgar. Besides, cyberpunk is not a typical characteristic of the Final Fantasy franchise, it's usually more of a fantasy world with some technological elements, even FF7 is no exception once you step outside Midgar.

You know, I would be pretty salty if any series got big. They left my poor Samon in the dust, and I'm NEVER going to get over that.
Maybe that's why I want Mitama to LIVE

@pamuchi too.

I was just being funny haha trying to downplay KnY's success which of course it deserves (I think any mangaka that struggles to achieve a serialization would love for this kind of success, so congrats to Gotoge), but yeah I mean its explosion of popularity was just people getting into the bandwagon of the hot new property, it also happened with One Piece and probably any other property that got an explosion of popularity..

Also.. I guess my humor doesn't translate well into written form lol I was kinda being sarcastic or ironic, although I do believe NPC mentality is what got KnY to the boost it has right now, for OP too of course but not in a "I sold 20 times what I sold last year breaking every damn record imaginable" level.. Yeah I'm still kinda salty lol

@Rain Spectre haha I was just being funny, again seems like my humor doesn't really translate too well into written form.

But being serious though, I don't really see why my NPC comment would trigger some of you, maybe I should have included that this applies to every series, it's obvious that a pretty hefty chunk of any property follow it because of that.

@TyVip Yes it is, anything super popular obviously has a good chunk of NPC followers, I assume, One Piece included.

Also TyVip I'm very interested in your One Piece number sources please, not that I don't believe you, I just don't think I have ever heard/read those numbers pre-oricon, are they from the One Piece volumes, I guess?

Also to end this.. Yeah, the whole point of that post I made I guess is that records are made to be broken, I should probably not have put the NPC thing lol but I was just being funny, and you guys know me already I'd assume that I don't like how KnY beat OP lol. But I didn't want to trigger anyone or whatever, I'm gonna edit the post and put "/s" I guess or something.

You used "NPC", a meme commonly used by alt-right groups to associate people with "those who have no autonomous thought", along with a meme mocking Kimetsu's fanbase as "people who just purchase blindly".

I don't buy for a second you would say the same for One Piece's fandom.
