Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Damn, here we are at 1k! It seems like we can get to 1.5k before the 2021 Jump thread. Here's to more endless discussions about sales and what'll survive!

Shonen in 2021: What's old is new again. Going to be very interesting to see how the current lineup fares anime-wise when the Bleach sequel and Shaman King remakes hit. It'll be real exciting!

I'd say Ayakashi Triangle has been my favorite chapter 1 in this 2020 Jump. Liked it more than Paradox Ghostwriter which had my second favorite chapter 1 in this year.

According to Shoseki estimations, Mashle has sold more than 15k copies. How good is that for a first volume?

The number itself isn't spectacular.

The good thing is, Mashle is a comedy driven battle manga. So, it doing the best among all the newbies is a good sign. It scratches a part of the gag manga itch that WSJ was looking for.
The important thing is to keep growing with newer volumes. A stagnant new franchise is not ideal. This applies to all other newbies like UxU as well.

Hard agree. Mashle's numbers itself are okay, but when you compare it with the current state of Jump, in addition to comparing it with that of other newbies, you'll find that it's in a pretty solid position. Growing (or even stabilizing if your numbers are good enough) is absolutely crucial, which is why I hold the value of Volume 2 and 3's sales as much as Volume 1. Samurai 8 opened with higher numbers than MASHLE, and yet it was axed partially because sales kept decreasing with each volume. Same with Robot x Laserbeam.

Which leads me to a question I have....how hard does the drop between volumes have to be in order for the axe to happen?

There probably doesn't even need to be a drop. Just lack of an upwards trend over multiple volumes can lead to cancellation. A new franchise/IP/title is useless if it doesn't grow with each initial release.

There are exceptions like HZ. But HZ could've been kept around because it did well in polls and it was a very unique series for WSJ.

S8 wasn't growing (nor dropping from what I remember) but the sales was a disappointment because it had Kishi's name on it. This was further proven with how much they overestimated it would do by overprinting Volume 1. It seemed like one of those instances where they thought Kishi's name would bring in manga fans who don't read WSJ but would still check out Kishi's new series by buying the volumes.

Everyone, just commenting about the thread solely is off-topic. Yes, I get that people are excited about reaching 1k pages this early, but you need to be discussing the magazine or WSJ series to be deemed on-topic.

If you wish to comment about the page count, do so as an aside while discussing something on-topic. Thanks.

-Rokudenashi Blues: Never got anime
-Rookies: Never got anime
-Video Girl Ai: Just OVAs that covered 2-3 volumes
-I's: Just OVAs that covered 2-3 volumes

Now that 90s nostalgia is in full motion, it would be cool to see Morita and Katsura adaptations getting full anime TV series. Also, Jaguar from Usuta (fortunately Sexy Commando Gaiden got proper anime).

Ichigo 100% would also be sweet since it only animated 2-3 volumes too

PS: I also accept a Hoshin Engi reboot of the reboot

So excited for the Shaman King remake. Could definitely benefit from trimming; especially in some of the later fights. Regardless, despite its flaws Shaman King is one of my favorites. Has so much identity throughout and a lot of passion early on.

Id like to see Ninku get a remake of both it and its pre/sequel for it's 30th anniversary in a few years. Ninku is another favorite of mine with maybe my favorite main group of any battle shonen.

Eyeshield 21 has its 20th anniversary next year, I never liked it's anime but it's one of the top sports Jump has ever put out. Even if you don't care for American football (which I don't dislike, but isn't an interest of mine) or even sports manga (which when I first read it at like 14 I didn't think that I did,) it's nigh Impossible not to love. Murata's incredible art has a lot to do with that, but even though the manga looks awesome the characters are great as well imo.

Last volume of One Piece will be the best selling yearly volume of all time for sure.

At the rate circulation is dropping, I wonder if One Piece's eventual ending will be the thing than pushes WSJ's circulation to less than 1 million, or if it'll last long enough for the magazine to drop first.

I think the latter is more likely, Jump dropping under 1 million circulation before OP ends.
