Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

They don't usually release together, so not easy to compare. Black clover's volume will probably still be (slightly) above Act-Age's, it's just that BC has pitiful backlog.

We are seeing it now because they have volumes released on the same month, but not really. If we go back to their past volumes, let's say, act-age 11 and Black Clover 24, we can see that act-age ranked in Oricon by Series on its first week with 113.291 copies, but Black Clover didn't rank on its first week, but on the second one, with 86.270 copies. Given it didn't rank on that first week, it means it had less than 102.382 copies sold, so act-age did kinda beat Black Clover on that first week, again, knowing we're comparing different months and days.

Oricon's Top 10 Weekly Chart by Series (05/11 - 05/17)

Oricon's Top 10 Weekly Chart by Series (03/30 - 04/05)

Oricon's Top 10 Weekly Chart by Series (04/06 - 04/12)

Being this the situation, we can only compare their first week sales, which were 81.831 copies for act-age Volume 11 and 69.994 for Black Clover 25. Of course, act-age had 5 days and Black Clover had 3, and later on their second week, act-age was 110.964 and Black Clover was 138.580. Black Clover would grow up to 158.817 and act-age stopped ranking in Oricon, but they're both actually close to each other. Will be interesting to see how do they perform this time.

This can be concluded knowing that act-age's backlog sells way, way more than Black Clover's backlog. As for individual volume sales, I expect both to be really close, maybe in a similar situation as My Hero Academia and The Promised Neverland.

Not often we get that much info about western manga sales, but there is some in here, especially about how much My Hero dominates the American manga industry.

Highlights:
Volume 1 sold almost 100k this year
Horikoshi is the third best selling artist in America, only after Dav Pilkey and Raina Telgemeir (two insanely popular children’s artists) at over 700k units sold in 2019.

so yeah, MHA is fucking huge here.
Interesting

This would mean that 2019 was only the first year MHA sold more in the US than in France (2019: 862k vs 840k; 2018: 500k vs 700k; 2017: 134k vs 500k) though you could arguably explain this with the fact that there were 6 new volumes released in 2019 in the US (vol. 17 to 22) vs 5 in France (vol. 17 to 21).
Still, that's one hell of a growth.

In the US, Vol. 1 sold 99k, Vol. 2 sold 69k and Vol. 3 sold 53k.
The best selling new volume was Vol. 17 with 50k
In 2018, Vol. 1 did 62k, Vol. 2 did 42k and Vol. 3 did over 30k. The best selling new volumes also did over 30k. So every single volume seems to have grown by 50%, more or less.

MHA aside, I find it interesting to compare the evolution of the manga market in the US vs in France
US Total Manga Sales since 2007

France Total Manga Sales since 2006

Both countries have had a downward trend from the late 2000s to ~2013 and started to recover from there, except the French manga market did so much faster, whereas the US one has yet to reach its 2007 peak again.
An explanation for this could be the rise of the digital market in between which is still very small in France but could be significant in the US?

3 days is a big enough gap that second week alone shouldn't be able to make up for it in case of stable sales. In fact (not the most accurate method, I'm aware, but bear with me as there is no real alternative), using shoseki estimations for week 3 and week 4 of volume 10&11, volume 11 is down around 10k.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was down, like I said.
That said, 10k decline is technically more "stable" than what the rest of the volumes have shown xD

In comparison, how much the volumes1, 2 and 3 of My Hero Academia sell in Japan?

I know it should be better in Japan, but I wonder how much is the difference.

What was releasing in 2007 for the manga market to do that well in the US?
I think that may have to do with the manga aggregators running around rampant at that time. To my memory, 2007-2008 is when manga aggregators really took off. For a while, manga sales went into a nosedive thanks to easily-accessed sites and for free, to boot. That directed most of the traffic elsewhere. Remember, a good number of people who’d buy manga don’t really have much of a disposable income.

But since 2012, the publishers have started making serious steps into establishing a digital platform, such as the Viz app, and CR app. The digital manga is where it’s at for the US. Now that people can buy them on a digital platform, it’s slowly shifting them into reading digital and as a result, the market is slowly recovering. Not to mention that some digital platforms are picking up some really obscure stuff, which is a big plus in my eyes.

I think the rise and fall of manga in america up to 2007 to its fall the year afterwards is pinned on lots of reasons, it's a heavily researched wrote about topic (proliferation of more anime being accessible, naruto had started airing in 2005 on tv, more bookstores, more word of mouth, etc)

Since nobody seems to have posted it.

Kimetsu no Yaiba: Kaze no Michishirube sold 230,673 in 3 days.
Holy fuck. That's ridicolous.

If you exclude the other kimetsu novels, this makes it pretty much the best selling novel of the year. In just 3 days.

For comparison, Sword Art Online 21 sold 253,739 in the entirety of 2019 (and it was released back in December 2018) and was the second best-selling light novel of 2019, it was only topped by Weathering With You, which sold 511,159.

So I checked around, and as far as I can tell, this is the biggest first week for a light novel on oricon to date. Second highest I could find would be Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou Vol.4 with 225,948 in 2013.

EDIT: Nevermind, I missed haruhi volume 10(and perhaps something else too).

Is there a particular reason why Muhyo & Roji has a s2?

I remember hearing that the first one happened since it was promoting a new sequel manga, but from what I gather that was just a short thing and s1 didn't seem to be especially popular.

I'm happy to get more to watch, but it's odd having this somewhat forgotten series from over a decade ago somehow getting a s2 when so many shows don't.
I've kind of done that with this old list I made and posted years ago that listed successes and failures since 1997. The series you're looking for would be listed as quasi successes.

It's not the best put together, and if I were to completely redo it I'd probably completely re-evaluate how I categorize what is a success or not with sales taken into account. Still I decide to update to current info based on the same metric before posting again.

Yearly Jump Success/Failures

Put this together awhile ago because I was bored and continue updating it every year. Thought I’d share.
I started this list at 1997 since that was the debut of One Piece and began the era of modern Jump.

These aren’t the perfect criteria to judge success by, but it’s the one I’m using.
Huge Success= Became a defining series for Jump.
Notable Success= 3 Or More Years
Quasi Success= Ran for 1-2 Years (with exceptions for short series who received anime)

Quite strange because Funimation is part of the production committe for Season 2:
Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation s2 committee
  • Animax Broadcasting Japan
  • Asmik Ace
  • Sky PerfecTV
  • Funimation
  • Bandai Namco Arts
  • A3
  • Amusement Media Academy
Take in comparison with S1 committe:
  • Animax Broadcasting Japan
  • JY Animation
  • Sky PerfecTV
  • Sony Pictures Entertainment
  • Bandai Namco Arts
So I think overseas influence shouldnt be take off from the possibilities of Muhyo getting a new season.
Keep in mind Sony Pictures owns Funimation and that buyout happened between the two seasons. As Sony Pictures is only listed for season 1 I think it's likely they just wanted to use an anime specific brand rather than the more general one as they're the same company anyway. Since Shueisha isn't on the committee no one who invested cares about manga to promote and since I think think any of those companies are involved in merch (Bandai Namco is but different subsidiary than the one listed) it's probably as simple as the specific companies who stayed turned profit and think a second season will get them more money.
