Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I wouldn't call a girl-on-girl kiss in an ecchi manga published in a shonen magazine anything shocking or daring, it's exactly what the target audience would love to see. Show me a romance/kiss between two male characters and then we can get into a real conversation.

Speaking of, I would love KAITO to return to WSJ at some point, ideally a sports or romance series (or both).

To be honest, this chapter of Ayakashi Triangle was very light or weak with ecchi.
Yabuki himself has already done something like that in To Love Ru.

By the way, it reminds me of that "easter egg" that Yuuna-san had in chapter 181.
That was something else to be "shocking" (for me was funny).

That reminded me the Oboro and Hibari chapter 182, a entire chapter for two girls dating and literally almost having sex in a hotel room in order to make the harem plan happen, Ayakashi is super tame compared to this kkkk

I don't think he/she will return anymore for SJ, specially after the disaster it was Buddy Strike, i feel like Plus it's the best place for him/her

Any word on Viz translating the new Posuka and Shirai one shot?

I can’t imagine they wouldn’t

Is that this week or next week? Cause we don’t usually find out until they make an official announcement some days before it releases.

Next week. Now that I think about, they would probably say something on Wednesday. I asked too early

I still don't understand why they can't just translate all the one shots. It would finally give us an opportunity to look into stuff by up and coming artists alongside stuff by established ones.

If it’s a no named creator the only ppl that’ll really care are manga enthusiast like us, and we’re likely the minority. Casual readers probably won’t care. So as of now it would probably be a waste of time and money for them.

However, the manga industry in the West has evolved a lot in the last couple years, especially Jump. A few years ago I don’t think any of us ever imagined that we’d be getting official translations of the entire magazine, released simultaneously with Japan on Sundays(Monday’s for them). They days of having “Jump Starts”, only getting the first 3 chapters of a new series translated, and praying that Viz decided to pick it up, or wait to see if a fan group picks it up feel like it was ages ago.

With the western manga industry constantly growing I’m sure we’ll eventually see the day where viz is even translating the one shots

The western manga industry has certainly come far since then. I’m happy that we’re finally getting a model that’s accessible for a lot of people, but I do wish this could’ve started at least 5 years ago. Then again, after reading the article @Halloween posted a while ago about just how slow and cumbersome Japanese bureaucracy is, I’m not surprised it actually took this long. The legal hurdles both sides had to get out of the way must have taken longer than one would expect in this current day and age.

Since I'm now back, might as well give my own opinion of the most recent batch:

Ayakashi Triangle: It's...fine, really? I don't know why people got any expectations up about the series considering it's Jump romcom, which is a category hardly which proves itself as fine art.

I will say the first six chapters are very competently written, in that there's a general through-line that helps establish a flexible but still steady status quo with a number of supporting characters at the same time. It's like Black Clover in that regard, it doesn't do anything wrong and in fact does plenty right, but it can't really go above an 8 on the measure of quality.

Now, if Yabuki actually has the balls to actually commit to the yuri angle, though...

Magu-chan: God of Destruction: Well, this was...peculiar. Some have been saying that the series is very much a Sunday manga in disguise, and the argument is there, with the SOL focus and generally "sleepy" tone.

Thing is, though, much of Sunday's best works over the last decade (Magi, Silver Spoon, Komi, Yofukashi, Frieren) are manga which through constructed were able to quickly elevate themselves above that tone, and thus far Magu-chan is just...nothing. It's cute, but five chapters in it already feels like the manga has to push itself for ideas, and that's not a good sign in Jump's environment.

Hard Boiled Cop & Dolphin: This series is...better bad.

Here's the thing about Ryuhei Tamura, while he is very much capable of fun character writing and interplay, he is terrible at formation or planning, simply because he never designs characters or settings to align to more than one tone. Hence we have a ridiculous amount of slapstick comedy mixed with a serious mystery story, and the two tones just aren't able to match up. At all. Nothing else really adds up either, and the Anya clone just speaks to me as desperate trend chasing.

Oh, and despite Samejima having a completely separate profession, life position and to a degree personality, it feels like Tamura is still just writing Oga. Ugh.

Me & Roboco: The series is very obviously not intended for anyone above the age of 11, so I can't really say anything one way or another. All I can really question is why Jump wanted to make a series targeted at a such tiny amount of the reader demographic, but that's it.

Does anyone else think is ironic the Young Jump is going to release a Special Issue Focused on Sports, while the Shonen Jump does not currently have any sports series?

It's not really ironic, but it is pretty depressing. I hope that Jump is preparing a few sports series for the next serialization round. My dream, would be for KAITO to return with a third sports manga, but there's probably no chance of that...

Also, something interesting to note in that article is that Takahide Totsuno (Alice & Taiyo) is publishing something in the supplement along with their one-shot in GIGA. I wonder if we'll see them back in Jump soon.

Speaking of which, what sport does everyone think WSJ will do next? We've talked about what people want plenty, how about what we think Jump will actually attempt first?

Ice hockey is a possibility due to Amano's Hot oneshot but what else is there? I feel like with the Tokyo Olympics (maybe) coming up next near, they'll want to run an olympic sports manga or two, and a quick check tells me Japan's best Olympics sports are judo, wrestling, gymnastics, and swimming. Perhaps we'll see one of those 4 soon?

I feel like Jump or authors don’t just choose a sport and just make a manga of said sport just because.

I’d imagine a creator just decides “I want to make a sports manga”, and just make a sports manga on a sport they’ve already had a lot of interest in or always have wanted to research.

I don’t think the Jump Editor In Chief just says “our next sports manga needs to be a Tennis series!”. I think the Tennis series just happens to come along, and from a creator with a passion for Tennis.

So I think it’s borderline impossible to guess what sports series will be next

If Jump desperately wanted a manga for a certain type of sport I'm sure they could get one. Go to successful authors of those sports and make good offers to do a new series in Jump, put out an advertisement specifically requesting submissions, if someone submits one to another Shueisha magazine see if they're willing to alter it to be suitable for Jump (if it's not already), etc. I'm with you that's likely how it normally goes but if Jump really wanted a judo/wrestling/swimming/gymnastics manga I'm sure they could get one.

I would imagine Alice to Taiyou's author will return to some Jump publication in some form soon, and I'm assuming Miura Kouji will be leaving Kodansha sometime soon since he's had two oneshots recently as well. I'm pretty excited for both of their upcoming works.

I mean, sure. However they’re aren’t too many mangaka I can think of that have written 2 sports manga about the same exact sport. The only one I can think of is Inoue going from Slam Dunk to Real(and even then Real is about wheelchair basketball, so that in itself separates it A LOT from actual basketball).

And I doubt there are many mangaka out there that are willing to sacrifice potentially several years to write, say, a swimming manga when they have absolutely no interest in swimming.

They could find someone who’s already passionate about swimming and interested swimming, but that’d still be tedious. I’m sure if the WANTED to try that hard they could make it happen, but I personally can’t see them putting that much time and effort into that when that series won’t even be a guaranteed success and can just as easily get an early ax as any other newbie
