...well, shit I wasn’t expecting this. Though OP does have a new volume coming out, but this is absolutely insane. It won’t last, since OP has a new volume, but... Jesus.

Nothing’s coming close to Kimetsu - maybe if you combine all the listed numbers there, then it can put up a fight. OP vs Kingdom will be interesting to see going forward, as well as who will win third place between HQ, Quints, MHA, and TPN.

...actually, it’s more likely MHA, HQ, and TPN may be fighting for 4th place. Underneath a fucking romcom. XD The only thing stopping SxF from competing with the big boys in the Top 6 is the number of volumes it has.

What even is 2020?

So far it is like a suckerpunch in the guts. Then an uppercut to the chin. Then a kick in the nuts. And then a german suplex to finish things off.
At least considering some things.
But like you said we got some pleasant surprised like the insane sales, the never stopping KnY train and SxF being insane as always. Those good news just get drowned in bad news, at least it feels that way to me.

There’s Kimetsu and Kingdom, but what’s the third series that might outsell it? Neverland?
5Toubun has no chance fighting for 3rd once OP 97 releases (it has no more big releases and its backlog, while still very good, isn't strong enough to close that gap), the only series that has a shot at beating OP other than Kingdom is Haikyuu since its backlog has been going nuts since the series' ending, if it can hold it like this for a while it has a shot (although I don't think it's very likely personally, but it does have an anime coming in october so that might help it). Kingdom on the other hand basically has 2nd in the bag at this point unless its backlog randomly collapses.

So no one is going to talk about the fact that jjk and spy x family are above aot in yearly sales without having an anime out yet. I know that aot only have 3 volumes per year and only 2 came out but even then this is crazy.
This was expected, actually. The last Attack on Titan volume sold less than 600,000 in 4 weeks (not counting SE). Jujutsu Kaisen has had good backlog sales through the entire year and Spy x Family is still up and coming and hasn't peaked yet. Spy x Family 5 comes out next month and that will probably add the numbers the series needs to be on top of Attack on Titan. Jujutsu Kaisen still has a new volume coming out in 2 months as well, plus the anime so it has a chance of beating it too should Attack on Titan keep the previous volume's numbers. Also, Attack on Titan still has a chance of being out of the top 10 when the list is finished because Hanako-kun should release a new volume in October or November and Fire Force's backlog is still selling.

While I would like to see the Neverland duo do something more unique, I also get the impression that the writer’s style is horror and that’s what he’ll always lean towards. So I wouldn’t mind if Spirit Photographer became a full serialization. But I also sorta hope they do something else.

Great One Shot either way

So, about that Neverland duo’s oneshot? Great. I just got up having a bad dream from reading it.

My story goes that I’m a manga character who suddenly got possessed by an evil spirit and went into a bloodbath. By the time I’ve come to, I don’t remember everything, so I asked a Saburou-like person to investigate but then all the vengeful spirits approach me. Dream end.

So basically, it’s basically the oneshot’s plot with a few differences.

Anybody ever experienced something like this?

Personally i want Posuka to draw some fantasy series, she posted so much crazy fantasy illustrations in her twitter that i always had this wish of seeing her drawing some classic fantasy stuff or at least a hybrid of it, would be nice if Shirai can get rid of the horror/bizarre stuff and try something different, this one shot was okay but that's it.

Where's Magu-chan firs rank poll Buranchi?

Since we were on that discussion about Jump mangaka doing game adaptations, I'd love to see Posuka doing a Shin Megami Tensei manga even if not in Jump.
Maybe revive the Devil Children franchise and let her do a manga tie-in.

Guess i'm the only one who thought that TPN duo's one shot was terrible, especially because of TPN's original, ambitious and high concept setup. This was a completely by the numbers ghost story with surprisingly little character and the usual predictable twist. Zero potential (besides episodic excorism with tryhard sob stories i guess) and I'm baffled this is what they felt they needed to come back for so soon after the ending of TPN.

it seems weird we had two series that were generally fairly well liked and unique in Jump (Food Wars and TPN) that ended up nose diving in quality as they went on then within a year after ending their writer/artist duo released one-shots that are exorcist stories trying to be unique (ironically I think trying to be unique is almost as cliche as just being an exorcist story at this point like how adding stupid gimmicks to isekai has overtaken just being transported to a fantasy world but that's beside the point)

The "trying to be unique" seems more like personal assumption, Yugen was clearly inspired by series like Jigoku Sensei Nube and it didn't felt like "trying to be unique" at all to me but a traditional take on the genre

Btw, waiting for the serialization, it was a very good one shot by Tsukuda and Tosh.

i mean, whether you like it or hate it, the entire purpose of a one shot, is to either

1. Test the waters of something to see what works and what doesn’t work before turning it into a full series.
2. Just writing a short stories to see if any of them is worth exploring futhers
3. Just writing a short story for the sake of writing a short story. Maybe to get some creative juices out so they won’t go stale from taking too long a break.

“I’m baffled that this is what they felt they needed to come back with” just feels a bit of a harsh statement, when a one-shot isn’t necessarily always made with the intentions of blowing the audience away to begin with

By the lack of color page and 3 promotion pages about Neverland before the one shot, it honestly just felt like something for the fans to enjoy and say "hey we will keep working together", nothing to take much seriously.

Of course, i'm just really surprised how uncreative and trivially simple the whole thing was. Too barebones even for those purposes imo. The Food Wars duo's similar (but wildly different in execution) exorcist one shot had so much more going for it. This was just a single cliche scene we have already seen a million times.
To me a one shot should also be a lot denser and more economic due to fulfilling those purposes with a limited number of pages. But this one was so liberal with the real estate of its pages and pacing like chapter 100 of a manga.
Dedicated almost the whole thing to the familiar and the cliches and not to a necessary element that would set it apart from other similar episodic stories. The supposedly enigmatic spirit photographer was clearly intended to be that, but there was little effort made and ended up as just a catalyst (to check next door) and nothing more. He is supposed to be the guide of the readers too, the one thing all its stories would share if it were to be serialized, its selling point to me. But he was a complete non-entity. And what followed had no challenge or adversity.

I liked the one-shot, but I don't think they intend to have this serialised. As Shinuki said, it's probably just for the fams and just for their own fun. Shirai probably had an itch to write this story for quite some time, and this was just them letting it out. I bet when they return it'll be something unique, yet totally fitting their style.

Actually sad to see One Piece's hype dying after 23 years of being untouchable every year. :(

The literal point of the one shot is having an excuse for the duo to go back to the magazine and promote Neverland's 4th Anniversary projects. It's pretty clear when even the descriptions of the one shot are filled with Neverland's 4th Anniversary stuff. Looking deeper into it seems pretty dumb to me, when the purpose is to just show a kind of a tearjerker short story with no focus other than the happy ending moment.

The story gets the work done, an exotic character appearing in the life of a seemingly normal one, discovering a tragic past that is finally solved by the mysterious photographer. Even if cliché, entertaining, with pretty much the same structure Yugen had back with the Shokugeki duo.

OP has only released one volume this year compared to the 3 or 4 it usually does. I mean Kimetsu really blew it out. Kingdom and the rest would easily fall behind had OP released 3 volumes.
