Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I think you guys are giving too much importance to what people are commenting on twitter or other social media about Jump. Unfortunately, in every platform where you do not have mods or people directly answering to messages, a large portion is composed of ignorants.
I generally prefer forums, just as this one, since I know I can find people who actually put care in trying to communicate with others.

Red Sprite was another quick flop that got randomly hyped up by anime youtubers and got a small fanbase as a result, but that was because it was the new battle shounen that took Bleach's spot when it ended rather people than being drawn to the series on its own merits. Black Clover was the first new battle shounen to start after Naruto ended after all, so many people assumed it would happen again when Bleach ended.

Other wise, since I started following the ToC and new manga in 2011, there's nothing that really stands out to me as a flop that could've gathered a lot of attention. I don't think it could ever really be a common thing (at least on the same level), since most quickly cancelled series in WSJ are either bland or boring or generally just do nothing to stand out.

There are very few series like Ghost Writer that have a strong premise that really stand out but fail because of terrible execution.

A canceled manga is not always a bad manga.
even you must have manga you liked and ended up being canceled.

if you are looking for "friendship effort victory" theme manga then you won't find that in Chainsaw Man

you mention one piece and samurai 8. The closest thing to a battle shonen with cool power system and IS new atm is Undead x Unluck
No. I’m not looking for much of anything except a fun/interesting characters. Which is why Chainsaw Man caught my interest.

I'm not saying all cancelled manga are bad, just that most early cancellations happen because the series didn't stand out enough to gather a stable fanbase. I quite liked Love Rush for example but it was just a normal romcom whose one different idea (monster girls) wasn't used in a particularly interesting or stand out way, so it flopped fast. It didn't do anything that made it particularly bad, it just didn't do anything particularly good or attention drawing either.

Ghost Writer is different to most WSJ early flops however since it definitely did enough to stand out and attract attention, it instead had the problem of completely wasting all of those big stand out ideas by having every new plot point just be more justification for the MC to never grow or change.

So you shouldn't be bothered by anyone who's upset about the cancellation of TPGW, for you the manga had a defect but that didn't stop it from having people who liked it.

lifting the tag will not undo the cancellation of the manga. The decision has already been made, and the jump will not bother with that.

One problem i always had with the western Manga fanbase is that everything that is unorthodox is automatically regarded as good. GW is unorthodox and the idea was interesting but the execution was just not good to say it in mild terms. I don't want to go on a tantrum about why GW is so bad but the plagiarism issue is far from the biggest problem this series has.

Then UU might still be the right call for you. For an example there is a character who to this day still gets fanarts from Japanese fanartists despite spoilerspoilerspoiler. Also besides the main characters, one who tried to spoiler herself first chapter and the other who spoiler her with no guilt whatsoever, we got an interesting set of side/support characters who all got their own gimmicks like a little boy who is made up entirely of spoiler (and we still don't know WHAT that even means!) or a guy who is spoiler but totally kicks ass and is really funny with his spoiler jokes as well as a girl who untill recently you only saw as a spoiler.
Lots of those characters haven't done much so far or been shown much yet they still get much attention online and drawing fanart , especially high quality ones, isn't something you just do for nothing, you do it because you care about those characters or find them really interesting. So maybe you might also find some of them to your liking.
In any case, CSM is a good call for fun/interesting characters, that's for sure. XD

I see it as a symptom of the stubborn nature found there. They judge too much on genere and not on actual quality.

This discussion about Ghostwriter being a unique case because it stood out and was fairly popular in the west reminds me of another flop that was kinda a unique case imo, which is David-kun.

I think David-kun was also a fairly unique case in the sense that it gained a decent following in the west for a new comedy manga in Jump, but failed to gain readers in Japan. The people that read it also praised it very highly and I don't remember the series being criticized a lot by western readers. IMO it was generally a very well written comedy manga and is still to this day my favourite series that got cancelled.

Though I think the main reason it failed to gain popularity in Japan wasn't because it was badly written. It was mainly because it was full of western art and cultural references, that most Japanese readers probably never heard of. The only Japanese references it had, that I can think of, were references of other Jump manga. It even included western references that I had never even heard of before. So I can only imagine how hard it must've been to understand the references as the average Japanese reader who probably never heard of most of the references.

I think it had a lot of potential nonetheless because similar to Gintama, the mangaka created a universe where he could do whatever he wanted and get away with it. I also think if it included more references to Japanese culture, history and art, it could've gained some popularity in Japan. Though I might also be completely wrong with that assumption.

Honestly, what I think what made David stand out is that it and I'm From Japan were the first two jump gag manga we've ever really had translated weekly, and Japan was far too, well, Japan-focused for western readers to enjoy it much.

People have a too romantic view on art, Like people think that just because something is unique or new that it have to be good. I saw S8 and Ghostwriter fan keep saying it good because they are unique compare to other stuffs on Jump, it not ecchi/gag/standard battle shounen, how mature they are and Jump readers are kids that can't appreciate that. Originality is overrated, it's the execution that matter.

This funnels back to the cultural stigma that Shonen Jump is too "safe" in its decision making based on the argument of everything being either Naruto clone (which is a humongous stretch that shows people never actually read Naruto) or Dragon Ball clone (which is really untrue). Basically to most people who didn't do their even basic research, they genuinely think Jump is this homogeneous hive mind of shouty people without meaning.

is there M+ new url leaks yet? could Jump still axe stuff even after TPGW? also shouldn't there be at least 2 more new series after the current batch?

Hq, Mitama, AA, Bones, TPGW are gone and not counting BTW, they're being replaced by Honomieru, KK, BnK
that's leaves 2 open slots no?

HQ was replaced by Roboco.

They, uh, didn't plan the other. Nor could they. Because, uh, you know...

The only unaccounted for slot is Act-age which was not expected, I assume they're just adding another series to the next batch (the first of 2021 I assume) and that'll account for it.
