Lots of good news today.
I'm really looking forward to both of the new serialisations; while I suspect there's going to be two camps with
Red Hood - those who hype it as next big thing from day one vs those who will be extra cautious due to the GFC predecessors - I'm excited to see how the story unfolds beyond the oneshot format even if it follows a similar fate to other GFC serialisations. There's definitely room for it to explore various folk creatures if it becomes long-running. If it has the same quality of art and page layouts as the one shot then that alone will keep me invested, but I would definitely appreciate another battle manga doing well in the magazine right now, especially one that feels so creative.
NERU also looks really cool from what little I've seen, some of the examples of Hiraga Minya's art is top notch so I'm not worried on that front. Like has been already said, JJK started as a miniseries so it's not a bad thing at all, in fact it's possible the reception for the digital version was quite strong.
Read the Red Hood one-shot. Definitely walking a thin line. Feels like it could easily go the way of something like Bone Collection.
Ouch, comparing Red Hood to the series without correct perspective or understanding of body anatomy? Though then again we do have a current running series that also fits that bill.... Personally, I can't see the overlap with Bone Collection and how it could go down that route.
As for this issue, it's a shame to see Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin go before its anniversary, but it lasted as long as it needed to tell its full story, so it's not a horrible thing overall. It had its highlights, but it never wowed me - the first half was mostly duds and bad gags, and the initial set-up held me back from getting more invested when the action did start to kick into high gear; I could never imagine it being that popular to begin with.
Great to see Blue Box get 1st place however, breaking the record that The Elusive Samurai set a couple months ago, even if just by one chapter. Looking over this TOC it gives me way more hope in the magazine's future than I had even at the start of 2021. With series like Blue Box, The Elusive Samurai, and Sakamoto Days performing well from the beginning while all feeling very different is nice to see + we've got Mashle and its growing popularity while others continue to do their thing (Mission: Yozakura Family, Ayakashi Triangle, Undead Unluck) even if I'm not a fan of all of them. It does mean however that there are fewer available spots in the magazine, so seeing two new serialisations I'm hopeful for right now is going to be tough.
As for what
could end - it looks like Nine Dragon's Ball Parade will join Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin this time, and I tell c will live to survive another round (lol). Whether we have 2-4 serialisations in the following round (I've guess starting around #38-#40) those in any real danger look to be:
- I tell c/Nine Dragon's Ball Parade
- Candy Flurry (willing to bet it'll become a bottom dweller very soon)
- Magu-chan: God of Destruction
- High School Family
I know we were talking about Undead Unluck and Ayakashi Triangle not doing their best lately but I don't see them in any immediate risk. Plus we've got Burn the Witch coming back at some point which will allow for one less cancellation if it is short-term again, so I'd be surprised if any of the series other than the four above end within the 2021 year (unless we do get another round at issue #50 or so like we did with Build King and Sakamoto Days last time).
Okay, let's do this. First #1 position in ToC (outside of LCP). I'm using Jajanken:
- Sumou: chapter 8
- MHA: ch 11
- Black Clover: ch 15
- Straighten-up!: never
- Samon: never
- Yuuna: ch 23 (I dind't expect this one)
- Yaiba: ch 67 (LOL, Yuuna got it faster)
- Neverland: ch 33
- Spring Weapon: never
- We Never Learn: ch 40
- Dr Stone: ch 23
- RxL: ch 23
- Act-Age: never
- Jujutsu: ch 26
- Chainsawman: ch 88
- Yozakura: not yet
- Agravity: never
- Undead: not yet
- Mashle: not yet
- Ayakashi: not yet
- Elusive: ch 11
So it's the fastest #1 in the ToC since Hero Aca (they are tied). And as you mentioned, AssClass was also first in chapter 11.
It's also the first series to get a #1 position within its first 30 chapters since Jujutsu.
It should be noted that Samurai 8 was first in chapter 6, but I think we can all agree that that was editorial push and disregard it.
Time to add Blue Box to this list then. Does anyone have reference of any other series that achieved it faster - One Piece and Fist of the North Star come to mind but I'm sure there must be others as well? Curious to see how unprecedented this is for Blue Box (especially as a romance series).
